Google Lens can help you find likely matches for an old cable, charger, or gadget, but treat its results as leads—not proof of an exact model or safe compatibility. Photograph the item clearly, search a useful detail such as a connector or label, then confirm any identification against the manufacturer’s documentation.
What Google Lens can—and cannot—identify
Lens searches images for related results, visually similar pictures, and pages that use the same or a similar image. A match can point you toward a product name or model, but it does not guarantee that the result is the exact item in your hand. Google describes image search and related results in its computer image-search help.
Lens is most useful as a discovery tool when a cable or device has distinctive visible features, readable text, or a barcode. It cannot establish electrical safety or compatibility from appearance alone.

How to identify an item with Google Lens
- Take clear photos. Use good lighting and photograph the whole item first. Then take separate close-ups of each cable end, labels, molded codes, model numbers, brand names, and barcodes. Google recommends using a clear, well-lit image; photographing each detail separately helps make the relevant evidence easier to select. See Google’s Lens guidance for Android.
- Open Lens or image search. On a supported phone, use the camera or photo-search option in the Google app or Chrome, or open the photo in Google Photos and use Lens. The precise entry point varies by device, app version, and platform. On a computer, Google Search supports uploading an image, dragging and dropping one, or searching by image URL; in Chrome, you can right-click an image on a webpage and choose Lens. Google lists compatible browsers and desktop options in its computer instructions.
- Select just the useful detail. In Lens, narrow the selection to one connector, label, or other distinctive feature rather than the whole drawer or a pile of mixed cables. For a cable, search each end separately and note the shape and size you can actually see. Selecting a smaller region and refining the search with words can make results more specific, as explained in Google’s region-selection instructions.
- Use only confirmed details in the query. Add a brand, code, or connector description when it is visible or independently confirmed—for example, a readable model code or a connector type you can confidently recognize. Do not add a guess simply to make the search sound more precise.
- Read visible text or scan a barcode. Use Lens text selection to copy a readable model number or other marking, then search the exact text together with the brand. A barcode search may also surface product information. Google documents text selection and barcode-related search in its Android Lens help and Google Assistant help. Treat either result as a lead: a barcode or similar product image is not proof that the item is identical.
- Verify the candidate. Compare the likely make and model with a manufacturer product page or manual before buying a replacement or reconnecting a charger. For a charger, confirm the exact device and charger specifications from manufacturer documentation; connector appearance alone does not tell you whether the voltage, current, wattage, or polarity is suitable.
Choose the best search method for the evidence you have

Where to use Lens
Android
Google documents image search in the Google app or Chrome, selection of part of an image, and follow-up searches with additional terms. Lens can also be opened on a photo in Google Photos. iPhone and iPad
Google offers image-search workflows through its apps and mobile web experiences, but the available controls depend on the app, browser, and current device interface. Follow the Lens or image-search option shown in the Google app, Chrome, or Safari rather than expecting identical steps on every iPhone or iPad.
Computer
At Google Search, upload an image, drag and drop it, or use an image URL. In Chrome, right-click an image on a webpage and choose Lens. Google’s computer help page also lists Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge as compatible browsers for visual search.

Protect private information in the image
Avoid including private documents, personal details, or other sensitive material in the frame. Google’s Chrome Android help says that when Lens searches webpage content, a screenshot and page data are sent to Google to help select objects, with temporary storage for processing that specific query. Google’s Android guidance also describes Lens activity controls: turning off Web & App Activity prevents Lens activity from being saved to the Google Account, according to Google Photos Help.
