To get GitHub Copilot to write tests, open the code you want to test, ask Copilot Chat for focused tests in your project’s framework, and specify behaviors and edge cases. Review the generated assertions, run them with your normal test command, and fill any gaps yourself. For broader work, IDE agent mode can investigate and edit across files; cloud automations can run recurring tasks when the repository and organization are eligible and configured.

What Copilot can automate—and what it cannot

GitHub Copilot can help draft unit and integration tests, and GitHub’s testing guidance also covers mocks and end-to-end tests. It can generate test code from existing implementation, help you start with tests before implementation, and—through agent workflows—work across a project or run recurring tasks. Generated tests are drafts, not proof that the code is correct or that coverage is complete. GitHub cautions that generated tests may not cover every scenario, so review them and add cases as needed. See GitHub’s guide to writing tests with Copilot and its overview of testing code.

Generate tests for existing code with Copilot Chat

Prepare useful context

  1. Open the implementation file and place the cursor in the function or select the code you want tested.
  2. If your project already has tests, open a nearby test file as well or attach it to the chat. Existing tests can show Copilot the framework, naming style, setup, and assertion conventions used in your project.
  3. Identify the behavior you expect, not just the implementation details. Include normal inputs, boundaries, invalid input, exceptions, and any important side effects or validation rules.

Write a specific request

For example: “Write focused pytest tests for parse_amount. Cover a valid amount, zero, the lower and upper boundaries, invalid text, and the expected exception. Follow the conventions in test_amounts.py. Keep tests independent, and tell me which expected behaviors are unclear from the implementation.”

Replace the function, framework, behaviors, and reference file with the details of your project. This prompt is a useful pattern, not a special Copilot command or a guarantee that every requested case will be correct. GitHub recommends giving Copilot relevant code context and asking for the cases you need; see its test-writing workflow and guidance on asking Copilot questions in your IDE.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Use the /tests command

For existing code or a selection, Copilot Chat’s /tests command can request test generation. Select or focus the relevant code, then ask for the framework and cases you want rather than assuming Copilot will infer all project requirements. GitHub’s examples include specifying a framework such as Jest and a condition such as an empty list. See Writing tests with GitHub Copilot and IDE chat guidance for the current interaction details.

Start with tests before writing the implementation

You do not have to begin with finished code. Describe the intended behavior and ask Copilot to draft tests first; then implement the function against those expectations. This test-driven approach is useful when requirements are clear but the implementation does not yet exist. Be explicit about examples, invalid cases, and expected errors so the tests encode requirements rather than guesses. Review the proposed tests against the actual specification before treating them as acceptance criteria.

Review and run the generated tests

  1. Read every assertion. Confirm the expected result reflects the requirement and that the test would fail if the relevant behavior were broken.
  2. Look for missing cases. Check boundary values, invalid inputs, exceptions, empty collections, and important state changes or side effects that apply to the function.
  3. Check the test design. Ensure tests are independent and that mocks do not conceal behavior that should be exercised directly.
  4. Run the project’s usual test command. Use the same command your team normally uses, then inspect failures and fix either the tests or the implementation based on the intended behavior.
  5. Add tests for gaps. A passing generated suite only shows that its assertions passed; it does not establish that all relevant scenarios were covered.

GitHub’s documentation explicitly advises reviewing generated code and adding any necessary tests. Its test-writing guidance also shows running the resulting tests.

Choose the right Copilot workflow

Workflow Best fit What to check
Chat or /tests Focused tests for an existing function, file, or selection. Provide relevant code and framework details; review and run the proposed tests.
Prompt file Repeating a test-generation request with consistent inputs such as target function and framework. GitHub documents prompt files as public preview, and support is limited to the IDEs it lists. Check availability in your editor before relying on them.
IDE agent mode Multi-step work, such as locating an untested module, planning cases, editing tests across files, or running commands. Inspect the plan, commands, test results, and every change. Plan mode can draft a plan before edits.
Cloud-agent automation Recurring or event-triggered tasks, such as attempting to fix failing tests on a schedule. Eligibility depends on plan, repository visibility and settings, and organization policy. Configure only necessary tools and review sessions and resulting changes.

See GitHub’s documentation for Copilot agents, using agents in an IDE, and agent workflows. For automation setup and constraints, consult About Copilot automations, Using automations in the Copilot app, and Creating automations with Copilot cloud agent. Interface labels, preview status, and eligibility can change; verify current availability in your editor and repository settings.

Automate recurring work with cloud automations

Cloud automations can be configured to run on schedules or repository events. GitHub’s documentation describes a recurring example that attempts to fix failing tests nightly and opens a draft pull request. Before enabling an automation, verify it is available to your plan and repository, and confirm the organization permits the required settings and tools. A recurring task can take actions in a repository, so grant only the access it needs and inspect both the automation session and resulting changes. The automation’s attempt is still work to review—not an assurance that a failing test has been fixed correctly.

Troubleshooting test-generation problems

  • Copilot uses the wrong framework: Name the framework in the request, and provide an adjacent test file that demonstrates the project’s conventions.
  • The tests do not match expected behavior: State the requirement and expected outcomes directly, including boundaries, invalid values, and exceptions. Correct or remove assertions that encode assumptions rather than requirements.
  • Important scenarios are absent: Ask for the missing cases explicitly, then inspect the final suite yourself; generated tests may not cover all scenarios.
  • Generated tests fail: Run the project’s normal test command and read the failure. Determine whether the assertion is wrong, the implementation violates the intended behavior, or setup and mocks differ from project conventions.
  • A prompt file or automation is unavailable: Check the documented editor support, current preview status, plan, repository visibility, settings, and organization policy. Use Copilot Chat or a local IDE workflow if the feature is not eligible.
  • An automation changes more than expected: Review the session and repository changes, reduce its configured tools or permissions, and adjust its task before allowing further runs.
