Give each independent AI coding task its own Git worktree and branch, then launch the agent in that directory. This lets parallel agents work in separate checkouts while sharing the repository’s underlying Git data. It does not coordinate the agents or make overlapping changes conflict-free, so review and integrate every branch deliberately.
What Git worktrees isolate—and what they share
A Git worktree is a working directory attached to a repository. The main worktree is created when you initialize or clone a repository; additional linked worktrees let you check out other branches in separate directories. They share repository data but have per-worktree state, including their own HEAD and index. See the official Git worktree documentation.
For an AI-agent workflow, this means each agent can operate on files in its own checkout rather than competing to modify the same working directory. Git provides the worktree mechanism; it does not launch, schedule, or coordinate agents. Separate directories also do not ensure that changes to the same file or related code will merge cleanly.
Set up one worktree per independent task
- Split the work into independent tasks. Give each task a distinct branch name. If two tasks are likely to edit the same code, clarify ownership or sequence the work rather than assuming separate directories will prevent integration conflicts.
- Create a worktree and branch. From the repository, run
git worktree add -b feature/task-a ../task-a. The-boption creates the branch, and the path names the new working directory. For a branch that already exists and is not checked out elsewhere, usegit worktree add ../task-a feature/task-a. Consult the Git documentation for branch checkout constraints and other options. - Launch the agent in that directory. Set its working directory to the worktree path (for example,
../task-a) and give it the task instructions. Repeat with a different branch and path for each independent task. Keep file ownership and task boundaries explicit when work may overlap. - Review and integrate each result. In each worktree, check the current branch and inspect its diff, then run the project’s normal checks. Merge or otherwise integrate changes deliberately in your usual Git workflow; resolve conflicts rather than treating worktree separation as a substitute for review.
- Remove finished worktrees. After confirming a linked worktree is clean and no longer needed, run
git worktree remove ../task-a. Usegit worktree listto inspect the worktrees Git knows about.
Inspect, repair, and clean up worktrees
Git’s worktree commands cover more than creation and removal. The official documentation describes list, lock, move, prune, remove, repair, and unlock. Two recovery cases are especially useful in a multi-agent setup:

- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- A worktree directory was deleted outside Git: Git may retain stale administrative data. Run
git worktree pruneto remove stale records. - A linked worktree was moved manually: use
git worktree repairwhen appropriate to restore the connection. Check the command documentation for supported cases and options.
Unclean worktrees and worktrees containing submodules may need additional care before removal. Check the current Git command documentation for exact behavior and available options before removing them.

Limits to keep in mind
- Branch coordination still matters. Assign distinct branches to parallel tasks as the default. Git has specific constraints around checking out a branch that is already checked out in another worktree; do not make forced or exceptional arrangements your standard workflow.
- Shared Git data is not shared working files. Worktrees keep their working directories separate, but their changes can still overlap logically and require conflict resolution during integration.
- A worktree is not a security boundary. Giving an agent its own directory does not by itself restrict access to credentials, the network, or other filesystem paths. Those limits depend on the agent runtime and operating environment.
- Agent-specific support should not be assumed. Anthropic’s Claude Code CLI reference documents command-line usage and flags; it does not establish a native Git-worktree feature or recommend this workflow.
