Gemini Apps can use public Google Maps information to find places, answer directions questions, and estimate journey times in a conversation. To use it, sign in to Gemini, turn on Keep Activity, and ask a clear question that names the place or route you need. For live traffic, active navigation, and route controls, use Gemini inside the Google Maps app instead; that is a separate feature.
What Gemini’s Maps feature can do
Gemini Apps can answer natural-language questions about nearby businesses and attractions, place details, directions by travel mode, and estimated travel times using public information from Google Maps. For example, you can ask, “Where’s the closest coffee shop and what time does it open?” or “How long is the drive from Atlanta to Orlando?”
The result is useful for conversational discovery and planning. It is not a substitute for live navigation: Gemini Apps does not provide live traffic updates.

- Sign in to Gemini Apps and make sure Keep Activity is on. Google says the Maps feature is unavailable when Keep Activity is off, in Live chats, and in Gemini in Google Messages.
- Use Gemini on the web at gemini.google.com or open the Gemini mobile app. You can also use gemini.google.com on a phone or tablet.
- If you want Gemini to use your current device location, grant location permission. Gemini can also use saved Work and Home locations; Google does not list other saved Google Maps places as supported for this feature.
Google describes expanded place details and interactive maps as gradually rolling out. Its iPhone and iPad help page says they are available to people aged 18 or older using a personal Google Account who ask about a place in English. Your account, language, and rollout status may affect which options appear.

Ask Gemini to find a place or its details
State the kind of place you want and add practical criteria, such as a neighborhood, distance, opening hours, or a feature you need. A more specific request helps define the search rather than leaving Gemini to guess what “nearby” or “best” means.
- “Find a bookstore near Union Square and tell me its opening hours.”
- “Find me a park with a playground that’s within a 10 min drive from where I am now.”
- “Where’s the closest coffee shop and what time does it open?”
These are prompt examples, not guarantees that every result or detail will be available. When Gemini includes a linked place name, open it to reach the place details page. Depending on the listing and availability, you may be able to get directions, see a restaurant menu, visit its website or social page, or call.

Ask for directions or an estimated travel time
Name both the origin and destination, specify the travel mode, and include any route preference that matters. Google documents directions by travel mode and requests such as avoiding tolls.

- Driving: “How long is the drive from [origin] to [destination], and can I avoid tolls?”
- Directions: “Give me walking directions from [origin] to [destination].”
Gemini’s travel-time answers are estimates, not live traffic guidance. In Google Maps, available route options depend on the mode and what is available for that route; route cards show estimated travel times. For route choices and directions in Maps, see Google’s directions and routes help.

Inspect places on mobile and save a map list
On supported mobile accounts, tap a place preview or map pin to inspect it on an interactive map. Google says you can export all pinned places to a custom Google Maps list. The interactive-map and expanded place-detail experience is rolling out gradually, and the eligibility limits described above apply, so not every user will see these controls.
Gemini Apps or Gemini in Google Maps?
Choose the surface based on whether you are exploring before a trip or already navigating. Gemini Apps is for conversational place discovery and route questions. Gemini inside the Google Maps app is the in-navigation experience for route context and controls.

Location and other limits to know
- Gemini Apps’ Google Maps connection does not save location history or add a review.
- It does not use saved Maps places other than Work or Home.
- It does not provide live traffic updates. Use Google Maps navigation when you need in-navigation route questions or controls.
