Gemini in Gmail is Google’s AI assistant built into Gmail. It can help summarize email threads, find details in messages, draft or revise text, and suggest replies. Some features can also use related Google Workspace information, but access depends on the feature and your account, plan, location, language, and device.
How Gemini in Gmail works
Gemini appears in Gmail through the Ask Gemini side panel and feature-specific controls, such as Help me write or a thread-summary option. It is part of Gmail, not another name for the Gmail app as a whole. It is also distinct from the standalone Gemini app, even though some tasks and connected Google services overlap. Google describes these Gmail capabilities in its Gmail collaboration guide.
The general panel and individual tools are not interchangeable: a feature may have its own eligibility, language, or platform limits. Google’s feature and availability overview lists tools such as AI Inbox, Gmail search overviews, Gmail Live, proofreading, and Help me schedule alongside core Gemini features.

What you can use it for
Understand and find email
- Summarize a long conversation or pull out its key points and action items.
- Ask about details in past messages, such as a flight time, a package delivery, a sender, a date range, or unread mail.
- Ask questions such as “Summarize this email,” “Show my unread emails,” or “When is my package arriving?” Google lists examples in its Gmail examples and feature details.
Write and respond
- Generate a draft from a prompt or revise existing text for tone and clarity.
- Get suggested replies informed by the conversation.
Use related Workspace information
Where supported, Gemini in Gmail can find information in Drive files, answer certain Calendar questions, and create Calendar events. In the documented Gmail workflow, event information is limited to your primary Calendar. For a question that needs information from the web, Google advises explicitly asking for “Google Search” or a “web search”; this is a prompt instruction, not a guarantee that ordinary Gmail answers search the web.

Who can access Gemini in Gmail
There is no single access or price rule for every Gmail AI feature. Google’s eligibility and feature pages distinguish the specific tool, personal versus work or school account, plan, country, supported language, and platform.
- For certain features, eligible personal accounts may need Google AI Plus, Pro, or Ultra. Google also lists some tools—including Help me write, email-thread AI Overviews, and Suggested Replies—as available at no charge to personal Gmail users in the US. That does not establish free access to every Gemini feature or for personal accounts everywhere.
- Some features have US-only availability for personal accounts without a paid plan, while eligible Google AI and Workspace subscribers may have access to specified features and languages in more locations. Tools such as AI Inbox and Help me schedule have narrower availability than some core features.
- Google says users must be at least 18 and use an eligible account. Work and school access depends on an eligible Workspace plan, and an administrator may affect availability.
- Availability can differ between Gmail on the web and Gmail on iOS or Android.
Check the current, feature-by-feature conditions in Google’s availability overview and account and plan eligibility guide rather than assuming that access to one tool includes the rest.

How to open and use it
- On a desktop, open Gmail and select Ask Gemini near the upper-right corner.
- Choose a suggested prompt or type a question in the side panel, for example, “Find emails from [person] sent last week” or “Create a list of action items for me based on this email.”
- For a specific task, use the relevant control in a message thread or compose window when it is available, such as a summary option or Help me write.
- Review the result against the original message or source information before acting on it.
The documented controls and examples are described in Google’s Gmail guide. Mobile experiences are also documented, but not every feature is available on every platform.

- Check factual details. Google cautions that “Gemini features may suggest inaccurate or inappropriate information.” Verify summaries, answers, and drafts before relying on them or sending a message.
- Review inbox changes. Actions such as archiving, deleting, labeling, marking messages read, or starring can include a review or confirmation step. Inspect the matching messages and confirm deliberately.
- Calendar answers have a defined scope. In the documented Gmail workflow, Gemini can provide event information only from your primary Calendar.
- Feature availability varies. Account type, plan, geography, language, and platform can determine whether a particular tool appears or works.
Google documents the accuracy warning in its eligibility guidance and the inbox-action and Calendar details in its Gmail examples and feature details.
