On Firefox for iOS or Android, open a recipe page and either shake your phone or tap More in the three-dot menu, then Summarize Page. Firefox produces a short overview to help you scan a long post; use the original recipe page to verify every ingredient amount and cooking instruction.
Summarize a recipe on Firefox mobile
- Open the recipe webpage in Firefox on your iPhone or Android phone.
- Shake the phone, or tap the three-dot menu, choose More, then tap Summarize Page. Mozilla’s later cross-device guidance documents the menu route; its initial iOS instructions also described a thunderbolt icon in the address bar. Mozilla’s iOS launch instructions and Firefox mobile feature guidance explain the options.
- Read the generated summary to orient yourself, then go back to the recipe itself before cooking.
What Firefox’s summary can—and cannot—tell you
The feature is designed to summarize a page and surface key points. It may help you locate the recipe portion of a long story, but Mozilla does not promise a complete or validated recipe extraction. Check the original page for exact ingredient quantities, preparation and cooking steps, temperatures, timing, substitutions, and food-safety guidance. Mozilla also describes highlighting recipe steps, but that is not a guarantee that every detail will be captured correctly. Mozilla’s launch post, mobile feature guidance, and Mozilla’s explanation of the feature’s AI describe its intended role.
Check whether the page and your device are supported
Page length
Mozilla’s current user-facing guidance says summaries work on pages under 5,000 words. Its engineering article refers to a 5,000-token threshold; words and tokens are different measures, so treat the current end-user limit as a word count rather than converting the engineering figure. If the option is unavailable on a particularly long page, the page may not meet the stated eligibility limit. Mozilla’s current mobile guidance and its engineering account describe these thresholds.

Language, region, and operating system
In its May 19, 2026 rollout announcement, Mozilla said Shake to Summarize was available on Android in English and on iOS in English, German, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, and Japanese. Mozilla cautioned that availability may depend on the device and region. Your app version, operating system, location, and the language of the page can therefore affect whether you see the feature. Mozilla’s rollout announcement gives the dated language and availability details.

Understand where the summary is processed
Processing depends on the device and operating system. Mozilla says an iPhone 15 Pro or later running iOS 26 or newer can generate summaries on-device using Apple Intelligence. On other devices, page text is sent securely to Mozilla’s cloud-based AI; the May 2026 announcement identifies Mistral-Small for that route. So the feature is not on-device in every configuration. Mozilla’s rollout announcement describes the distinction.
Mozilla’s September 2025 launch post says users see a first-use prompt and can turn the feature on or off in settings. Mozilla later announced mobile AI controls for iOS and Android in May 2026, but exact setting names can vary by app version. Use page summaries on Firefox desktop
The desktop workflow differs from the mobile shake gesture. Mozilla’s September 2025 instructions say to select Summarize Page at the bottom of the chatbot sidebar, or Control-click the page and choose Ask [chatbot name] > Summarize Page. The exact chatbot name depends on the option shown in Firefox. Mozilla’s launch instructions describe this desktop route.
