You can stream a video stored in Amazon S3 to YouTube Live by giving FFmpeg an authorized S3 URL as its input and YouTube’s current RTMPS ingest address and stream key as its output. For a private S3 object, a presigned HTTPS URL is a practical way to grant temporary read access. FFmpeg must keep running on a computer or server with network access to both services; this is a file streamed as live video, not a direct S3-to-YouTube connection.
What you need before you start
- An S3 object that FFmpeg can retrieve, either because it is intentionally public or because you have a valid presigned URL for it.
- FFmpeg installed on a computer or server that can reach S3 and YouTube’s ingest endpoint.
- A YouTube live stream configured in Live Control Room, with its current RTMPS URL and stream key.
- An output configuration appropriate for your source and YouTube’s current encoder recommendations. Resolution, frame rate, video and audio bitrates, and keyframe behavior depend on the stream you intend to send; the example below is not a universal YouTube preset.
YouTube recommends retrieving the RTMPS URL and stream key from Live Control Room rather than relying on an endpoint copied from an old tutorial. Its guidance describes RTMPS as a secure extension to RTMP. The exact endpoint and key are specific to your stream. YouTube’s RTMPS guidance and RTMPS ingestion guide explain the destination details.
Choose how FFmpeg will access the S3 object
Private object: use a presigned URL
S3 objects are private by default. A presigned URL authorizes a GET request without changing the bucket’s access policy; its access is based on the permissions of the principal that created it. Treat the complete URL as a secret bearer credential: anyone who has it may be able to use it while it remains valid. See AWS’s presigned URL documentation and presigned URL behavior and limits.
Generate a URL that remains valid for the expected stream and any restart window. AWS evaluates expiry when a request is made: a transfer that began before expiry can finish, but a reconnect after expiry fails. If FFmpeg needs to reconnect after the URL expires, create a fresh URL and restart with it.

Public object: use only when public access is intentional
A public object can be supplied as an input only if the object and its access configuration actually allow retrieval. Do not make a private recording public merely to avoid generating a presigned URL. For the usual private-bucket case, a presigned URL is the more appropriate choice.
How do I stream an S3 video to YouTube Live with FFmpeg?
- Prepare the YouTube destination. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and configure or select the stream. Copy the RTMPS URL and stream key shown for that current stream. Keep the key private; do not put a real key in a public script, screenshot, or source-control repository.
- Prepare the S3 input. For a private object, generate a presigned URL for a GET request and copy the complete HTTPS URL without modifying it. For a public object, use its retrieval URL only if public access is intended and working.
- Set credentials in your shell or another protected secret mechanism. The following uses placeholders; replace them with your actual values in a private environment. Do not publish the expanded command or values.
- Run FFmpeg and verify the preview. Check Live Control Room for the incoming stream and confirm video and audio before starting or publishing the broadcast.
export S3_PRESIGNED_URL='https://example-bucket.s3.example-region.amazonaws.com/video.mp4?REPLACE_WITH_THE_COMPLETE_PRESIGNED_QUERY'
export YOUTUBE_RTMPS_URL='REPLACE_WITH_THE_RTMPS_URL_FROM_LIVE_CONTROL_ROOM'
export YOUTUBE_STREAM_KEY='REPLACE_WITH_THE_CURRENT_STREAM_KEY'
ffmpeg -re -i "$S3_PRESIGNED_URL"
-c:v libx264 -pix_fmt yuv420p
-c:a aac
-f flv "$YOUTUBE_RTMPS_URL/$YOUTUBE_STREAM_KEY"
This is an illustrative command shape, not a guaranteed preset. FFmpeg documents URL inputs and RTMPS support; the RTMP-family examples use FLV output. FFmpeg’s command documentation, protocol documentation, and format documentation describe those mechanisms. Confirm that your FFmpeg build includes the required protocols and encoder.

What the important options do
-rereads the input at its native rate rather than sending a file as fast as possible. It is useful when presenting a prerecorded file as a live stream.-i "$S3_PRESIGNED_URL"tells FFmpeg to read the object at that URL. The complete presigned query string is part of the credential; do not truncate or reformat it.-c:v libx264selects the H.264 encoder when it is available in the FFmpeg build. Choose the actual codec and encode settings to match YouTube’s current guidance and your source.-pix_fmt yuv420pselects a widely used pixel format, but it does not by itself establish a suitable resolution, frame rate, bitrate, or keyframe interval.-c:a aacselects AAC audio encoding when available. Audio settings should also be checked against current YouTube recommendations.-f flvspecifies the output container used by this RTMP-family command shape.
How do I use RTMPS with FFmpeg?
Use the RTMPS ingest URL displayed for the current stream in Live Control Room, followed by the corresponding stream key in the output address as shown in the command. Do not substitute a sample endpoint from an unrelated tutorial: YouTube’s exact address and key are stream-specific. YouTube’s developer guidance specifies RTMPS on port 443 for RTMPS ingestion; follow the URL supplied for your stream.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe stream key is effectively a publishing credential. Keep it out of public logs and source code. If it is exposed, replace or revoke it through YouTube’s relevant stream controls before continuing. Apply the same care to a presigned URL, which can grant access to the S3 object.

Can FFmpeg read an S3 presigned URL?
FFmpeg can use a URL as an input, and a presigned HTTPS URL gives it time-limited access to a private S3 object for the authorized request. The URL must be complete, valid, and reachable from the machine running FFmpeg. It is not a permanent substitute for credentials: expiry may block a later request or reconnect even when an already-started transfer finishes.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Looping a file and keeping the broadcast available
FFmpeg has stream-loop options that can repeat a source, but looping a file does not create a scheduled YouTube event and does not guarantee seamless transitions. Test the behavior with your actual file and confirm the preview in Live Control Room before starting the public broadcast.

The FFmpeg process must remain alive and connected to both S3 and YouTube. A locally running process stops if its host sleeps, loses connectivity, or exits. An unattended setup therefore needs a persistent runtime and monitoring. A cloud host can avoid dependence on a home computer, but introduces its own operating costs and operational responsibilities. The data path, network reliability, and cost depend on where the host and S3 object are located; no single cost or performance figure applies to every setup.

| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg cannot open the S3 input or receives an access error | The URL is incomplete, expired, mistyped, or the object is not publicly retrievable. | Use the complete presigned HTTPS URL or verify that public access is intentional and configured. Generate a fresh presigned URL if needed. |
| The stream starts, then fails after a reconnect | The presigned URL expired before the new request, or the host lost access to S3. | Generate a URL with sufficient validity for the planned stream and restart period. If it has expired, replace it with a fresh URL before restarting. |
| YouTube does not show an incoming stream | The output URL or key is stale or incorrect, the process cannot reach the ingest endpoint, or the output configuration is incompatible. | Copy the current RTMPS URL and key from Live Control Room, check network access, and inspect FFmpeg’s error output without exposing credentials. |
| Video appears but quality or playback is wrong | Encoding settings do not suit the source or YouTube’s current requirements. | Check resolution, frame rate, video bitrate, audio bitrate, and keyframe behavior against YouTube’s current encoder recommendations and verify the source file. |
| The stream stops when unattended | The computer slept, the process exited, or network access was interrupted. | Use a host that remains running, monitor the process and network, and plan how to restart it with valid credentials. |
| FFmpeg plays the video too quickly | The input is being processed as fast as possible rather than at real-time pace. | For a prerecorded file presented as live, include -re before the input as in the example. |
Copyright and YouTube channel considerations
Having a video in your S3 bucket does not establish that you have the rights to broadcast it. Use content you own or are authorized to stream, including its audio, and review YouTube’s current live-streaming and copyright requirements before broadcasting. Replaying prerecorded material as a live stream does not by itself establish that it complies with YouTube’s rules or makes a channel eligible for monetization; assess the content and channel against YouTube’s current policies.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is simply to keep uploaded videos running as a 24/7 YouTube stream, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It keeps the stream running without a computer or home connection staying on. Each slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card.
Monthly: $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for uploaded videos and YouTube streams, not camera broadcasts. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start the free first day.
