To rotate playlists across multiple YouTube channels with FFmpeg, run a separate FFmpeg process for each channel, using that channel’s own playlist and the server URL and stream key for its YouTube Live event. For compatible files, FFmpeg’s concat demuxer reads playlist entries in order; use -stream_loop -1 to repeat the input continuously. FFmpeg does not schedule the stream for an IST wall-clock time: use an external scheduler configured for Asia/Kolkata, then verify the event in YouTube Live Control Room.
What you need before you start
- Live streaming enabled on each YouTube channel, and a live event created or scheduled for each one.
- A playlist file and media files for each channel.
- FFmpeg installed on a computer or server that can access the media and sustain the required outbound upload.
- A separate set of YouTube ingest credentials for each event, stored privately.
- An external scheduler that supports the IANA timezone name
Asia/Kolkataif streams must begin at a particular IST time.
YouTube’s encoder guide directs creators to enter the event’s server URL and stream key in the encoder. Keep each key paired with its channel and process; treat it like a credential. Do not put a real key in a published command, script repository, or log. If a key is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio. See YouTube’s encoder setup guide and stream settings guidance.
Prepare a playlist for each channel
Create one text file per channel, with one media path per line using the concat demuxer’s file syntax. For example, channel-a.txt might contain:

Keep playlist files trusted and under your control. Relative paths, special characters, and files outside the working directory can require care; consult the FFmpeg documentation for concat file syntax and safety behavior.

Check whether the files are compatible
The concat demuxer joins files at the packet level; it does not automatically make dissimilar videos match. FFmpeg’s requirement is that “All files must have the same streams (same codecs, same time base, etc.).” Check that every playlist item has compatible streams, codecs, and time bases before relying on demuxer concatenation. The concat demuxer documentation and FFmpeg FAQ explain the options.
Use the concat demuxer for matching media
When the files already have matching stream layouts and compatible encoding properties, the concat demuxer is a practical sequential playlist input. It can avoid re-encoding when the output can safely copy the existing streams, but YouTube’s ingest requirements and the source formats still determine whether copying is suitable.
Normalize mixed media before streaming
If items differ in codecs, stream layout, frame size, frame rate, or other relevant properties, prepare them to common output properties in advance or build a concat-filter workflow that decodes and re-encodes as needed. The concat filter is a different approach from the demuxer and typically involves re-encoding. Test the transitions and audio on the actual playlist; there is no universal command that safely harmonizes every mixed set of files.
Configure YouTube ingest settings
In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live event for each channel and copy that event’s encoder server URL and stream key. In the process for Channel A, use only Channel A’s credentials; repeat independently for every other channel. The exact Studio labels can change, so follow the current event’s Live Control Room instructions. YouTube’s encoder settings list RTMP/RTMPS ingest, H.264 video, AAC or MP3 audio, and constant bitrate (CBR). YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport.
For video, YouTube recommends a 2-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed 4 seconds; it also lists support up to 60 fps. Select resolution, frame rate, bitrate, audio settings, and GOP/keyframe configuration for the actual content and current YouTube guidance. Do not assume the example command below applies unchanged to every source or FFmpeg build.

Start one FFmpeg process per channel
The following schematic shows the relationship between a channel playlist and its destination. It has not been tested as a production command; replace the example paths and endpoint with your own protected configuration, and adapt encoders and settings to your files and YouTube’s current requirements.
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -f concat -safe 0 -i channel-a.txt
-c:v libx264 -c:a aac -f flv "$CHANNEL_A_INGEST_URL"-re reads the input at its native rate rather than sending the file as fast as possible. -stream_loop -1 repeats the input indefinitely. -f concat selects the concat demuxer, while -i supplies the playlist. The encoder options shown are illustrative only. The output URL normally combines the selected YouTube ingest server and key; keep it out of shell history and logs. Prefer a protected secrets mechanism rather than hard-coding credentials in a shared script.
-safe 0 relaxes concat-demuxer path safety checks. Do not use it indiscriminately: use it only when required for your paths and only with a playlist file you trust. Check ffmpeg -version and confirm that the installed build includes the protocol and encoders you select.
Repeat the configuration separately for every channel
For Channel B, use its own playlist file, event URL, and key in another FFmpeg process. Keep process definitions distinct even if the playlists are identical. This isolates credentials and lets each channel have its own start time, media rotation, and monitoring. The reviewed YouTube workflow provides per-event encoder credentials; it does not establish a single FFmpeg process that independently manages several channel events.
Schedule launches in IST
Playlist looping and calendar scheduling are separate tasks. FFmpeg reads and streams media; an external scheduler launches the relevant process. Configure the scheduler with the timezone identifier Asia/Kolkata, not an ambiguous abbreviation such as “IST,” and confirm both the scheduler’s timezone and the host clock. Set up separate jobs where channels have different launch times or playlists.

The FFmpeg and YouTube guidance cited here does not define native wall-clock IST scheduling for playlist rotation. The scheduler’s exact setup depends on the operating system or service you use. Check its timezone behavior, daylight/timezone database support, process restart policy, and how it handles a missed or delayed launch. Test a scheduled run rather than assuming a correct-looking time entry will start the YouTube event.

Plan for bandwidth and encoding load
Concurrent streams share the host’s upload connection unless they run on separate hosts. Add the target output bitrates for all simultaneous streams, then allow headroom: YouTube recommends 20% beyond the stream bitrate needs in its streaming tips. This is a planning recommendation, not a guarantee that a particular connection is stable.
Resource demand depends on whether FFmpeg copies compatible streams or transcodes them. Stream copy generally avoids the encoding work of re-encoding, while transcoding consumes CPU or GPU capacity and can change quality. Actual capacity cannot be stated without the codecs, resolution, frame rate, number of processes, and host hardware. Test the complete concurrent workload. A single host is simpler to manage, while separate hosts can isolate failures; both approaches still need sufficient upload capacity and monitoring.
Test and monitor each event
- Start each FFmpeg process early enough to inspect its output before the event is due to be live.
- Open the corresponding event in YouTube Live Control Room and check that the preview appears.
- Verify picture movement, audio, playlist order, and transitions, then review YouTube’s stream-health status and any messages.
- Confirm each process is still running and is connected to the correct event. Monitor outbound network use across all concurrent streams.
- After a successful test, verify the scheduler’s next launch and restart behavior without exposing keys in output or logs.
YouTube recommends testing, checking preview and stream health, and starting the encoder ahead of the event. See its encoder settings, encoder guide, and streaming tips. YouTube’s encoder guide also states that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; confirm current behavior for the specific channel and event before planning around an archive.
Troubleshoot common failures
FFmpeg reports concat errors or the playlist stops at a file
- Likely cause: a path is wrong, quoting is invalid, or one item’s streams/codecs/time base differ from the others.
- Fix: verify each path and playlist line, then compare media properties. Normalize incompatible files or use a filter-based concat pipeline when re-encoding is appropriate.
YouTube does not receive the stream
- Likely cause: the process uses the wrong event’s URL or key, the key is invalid, or the selected protocol/endpoint is unsupported by the installed build.
- Fix: compare the process credentials with the current event’s Live Control Room values, confirm FFmpeg protocol support, and inspect the process output without printing secrets. Reset a key if it may have been exposed.
The stream is rejected or has poor stream health
- Likely cause: output encoding does not meet YouTube’s current ingest guidance, or the upload link is saturated or unstable.
- Fix: check H.264 video, AAC or MP3 audio, CBR, keyframe interval, and selected bitrate against YouTube’s current encoder settings. Recalculate the aggregate bitrate and restore upload headroom.
The launch happens at the wrong time
- Likely cause: the scheduler interprets a local timezone, abbreviation, or host clock differently than expected.
- Fix: set the scheduler explicitly to
Asia/Kolkata, verify the host clock, and run a test job while observing the event in Live Control Room.
One channel interrupts another
- Likely cause: the processes share a constrained upload link or the host cannot encode all outputs concurrently.
- Fix: check aggregate bitrate, CPU/GPU utilization, and each process’s logs. Reduce unnecessary transcoding, adjust output settings, or distribute jobs across capable hosts; test before production.
Copyright and channel-policy checks
Technical ability to loop a file does not establish that you have the rights to stream it or that a channel’s content complies with YouTube policies. Before putting a playlist on air, confirm permission for the video, music, and any other included material, and review YouTube’s current copyright and monetization rules for reused or repetitive content. A successful ingest test is not a copyright or monetization approval.
