You can choose Instagram’s built-in text styles for Story and Reel overlays. For bios and captions, Instagram does not provide the same font picker; a common workaround is to copy and paste Unicode characters that look different, with trade-offs in readability and accessibility.
Choose the method that fits where the text will appear

Change text styles in Stories and Reels
For text that sits over a Story or Reel, use Instagram’s own editor rather than a text generator. Meta says Instagram Sans is available in Regular, Headline, and Condensed styles for creating in Stories. Meta also announced six new text fonts and styles for Reels in November 2023, with optional outlines and support across hundreds of languages. These announcements describe features, not a guarantee that every account or app version has the same menu or style list. - Start creating a Story or Reel.
- Tap the text control, commonly shown as Aa, and type your text.
- Browse the styles offered by the current editor and select one. A reported interface path is to tap Aa and then the displayed font name; labels and placement can vary. SocialRails’ walkthrough describes that path.
- Preview the text against the actual background. Use an outline or another contrast treatment when needed so the words remain legible.
Meta describes legibility and accessibility as design goals for Instagram Sans, but that does not establish one fixed number or set of styles across every text tool. Judge the result in the specific Story or Reel you are making.
Use different-looking characters in a bio or caption
Instagram does not offer the same font picker for bio and caption fields, according to the reviewed how-to guides. A common workaround is a Unicode-style text generator: type the wording, choose a style, copy the result, and paste it into Instagram. This does not install a typeface or change Instagram’s font setting; it substitutes characters that resemble styled letters. SocialRails and MakeUseOf describe this approach.

- Enter the wording in a Unicode-style text generator.
- Choose a restrained style and copy the generated characters.
- Paste them into the bio or caption field, then preview the result on your profile or post.
- Keep your name, important keywords, and essential information in ordinary characters.
Use this sparingly. Unicode’s Standard says mathematical alphanumeric symbols are intended for mathematical or technical notation, not nontechnical text. Some generators use these symbols to imitate decorative lettering. A third-party guide also raises an accessibility concern: screen readers may announce Unicode character names instead of reading stylized text like an ordinary word. That specific warning is not established here by Instagram or an accessibility authority, so treat it as a reason for caution rather than a universal outcome. Keeping essential wording in standard characters makes it easier to read and interpret.
Use Indian-script fonts in the Edits app
Edits has a separate font workflow for Indian scripts. In a January 2026 update, Meta described new Devanagari and Bengali-Assamese script fonts for languages including Hindi, Marathi, Bengali, and Assamese. Meta’s documented steps are:

- Open the project’s editing timeline in Edits and choose Text.
- Select the Aa icon to view fonts.
- If the desired fonts do not appear automatically, open All fonts and use the language filter.

If you need a specific brand typeface inside a finished graphic or video, add the text in a design or video editor and upload the exported media. The text will be baked into that visual, not selectable or editable as Instagram text. This is an optional production route; for editable Story or Reel overlays, Instagram’s own controls are the direct choice.

Keep text readable and dependable
- Use Instagram’s native styles for Story and Reel overlays when you want text created and styled in the app.
- Use Unicode lookalikes in a bio or caption only for nonessential decoration, not for information readers need to understand.
- Preview styled text in its final placement; a style that looks clear in a generator may not be clear against a photo or in a profile.
- If exact custom typography matters in a visual, render it in an external editor and check the exported result before posting.
