For exact custom-font results, generate the image background first and add the lettering afterward in an editor that has your licensed font. Prompts can guide an image generator toward a type style, but they do not reliably reproduce a particular font. If you need the lettering integrated into the generated composition, prepare it as a reference image and use a structure-reference feature where available.
Can you upload a custom font to an image generator?
It depends on the tool. A prompt can describe typography, and some generators accept image references, but neither is the same as giving the model a font file and guaranteeing that it will use it. The official OpenAI guidance cited here recommends specifying text and its appearance in the prompt; it does not establish direct custom-font-file support. Adobe documents a different route for production work: Photoshop APIs can use Adobe Fonts or a hosted custom font resource when the required access and font details are in place.
For brand work, treat prompt-generated text as a visual approximation unless you verify the output letter by letter. Use a reference image for stronger control over lettering layout, or set the final text in the actual font after image generation.

How to make a custom-font image: a reliable workflow
- Prepare the lettering. Write the exact headline, label, or logo copy. For a brand typeface, create a clean image of the lettering using the licensed font. Keep a copy of the source text so you can correct it later.
- Explore with a short prompt. Put the words in quotation marks, or use ALL CAPS when appropriate. Specify the font style, approximate size, color, and placement. For example: “NORTH SHORE” in quotes, bold geometric sans-serif lettering, warm white, centered near the top; simple dark-blue coastal background. This describes a look; it does not ensure a particular font file is used.
- Use a structure reference for composition. Upload the prepared text or logo image as a Structure reference if the generator offers that feature. Increase Strength when the result should follow the reference layout more closely. Add a Style reference separately if you want to influence the visual treatment. A structure reference guides arrangement; it is not a substitute for loading the font into the generator.
- Generate variations. Keep the text brief and compare several outputs. Inspect spelling, character shapes, spacing, contrast, and whether the lettering remains legible at the intended size.
- Apply the real font for final accuracy. Place the selected generated background in a design editor and typeset the copy with the licensed font. This keeps the background generative while the lettering remains editable and exact.
- For automated PSD production, resolve fonts explicitly. Use the correct PostScript name and, for a custom file, a supported cloud-storage resource. Set missing-font handling deliberately; use fail behavior when substitution would make the design incorrect.
- Check rights and access. Confirm that the font license permits the intended use and that the editor or rendering service can access the font or required entitlement.
How to prompt for readable lettering
OpenAI Academy’s prompt guidance recommends quoting the exact text or using ALL CAPS, describing font style, size, color, and placement, and keeping copy short. Spell uncommon words letter by letter if needed. For dense layouts, ask for “sharp text rendering,” then expect to polish the result in a design tool.

- Use only the words that need to appear in the image; move explanatory copy to the caption or layout editor.
- Specify where the text belongs, not just what it says: for example, “small label at lower right” or “headline centered across the top.”
- State a recognizable style description, such as condensed sans serif or high-contrast serif, rather than assuming the generator knows your font name.
- Review every character. A visually convincing result can still alter a letter, omit punctuation, or distort a logo.
These prompt practices improve guidance, not exact font fidelity. If a campaign requires consistent branded lettering across multiple assets, use the generator for imagery and typeset the copy in a controlled editor or production pipeline.
Using a reference image in Adobe Firefly
Adobe Firefly supports using a text or logo image as a Structure reference. Adjust Strength to influence how closely the generated composition follows that reference. You can combine a Structure reference with a Style reference when you want the prepared lettering arrangement alongside a separate visual treatment.
Prepare the reference with the correct words and proportions before upload. Check Firefly’s result for the actual letter shapes and spelling; a composition reference improves layout control but does not make every generated rendition a guaranteed typeset copy.

Using custom fonts in Adobe Photoshop API workflows
For editable, automated PSD output, Adobe documents font resolution through the Photoshop APIs. The approach differs depending on where the font comes from:
- Adobe Fonts: The Photoshop API v2 can select an Adobe Font by PostScript name at render time when the account has the required Fonts entitlement and product profile. Adobe marks this feature beta, so confirm its availability and requirements for your account before relying on it in production.
- Custom font file: The Photoshop text API requires the correct PostScript name and an
hrefpointing to a supported cloud-storage resource. A local file path alone is not the documented resource reference. - Missing font: Configure behavior as
failoruseDefault. The documented default isArialMT. Choosefailwhen a fallback would silently damage a brand asset; handle the resulting error in the job pipeline.
Font lookup is only one part of a repeatable render. Keep the source copy, PSD template, font identifier, resource location, and missing-font policy together so the same job can be reproduced and diagnosed.
Canva as a finishing editor
Canva lets users add or generate images and edit them in designs. Its app documentation says apps cannot upload or define custom fonts, use Canva Pro fonts, or download underlying font files. As a result, font availability depends on the account and editor context; do not assume an app integration can make an arbitrary custom font available. If the exact font is not available in the editing context, finish the lettering in a tool that can use the licensed font.

Why AI changes text in an image
Prompt-based image generation is not equivalent to laying out editable text with a font engine. The model may approximate letterforms rather than preserve each character as exact typography. Longer or dense copy gives it more opportunities to produce misspellings, inconsistent spacing, or altered glyphs. Short, explicit text and reference images can help, but the dependable way to guarantee the exact words and typeface is to typeset them after generation or render them through a workflow that resolves the font directly.

The image has the wrong spelling or distorted letters
Shorten the text, quote it exactly, and specify placement and appearance. For final copy, replace the generated lettering with editable text in the real font rather than repeatedly prompting for exact spelling.

The brand font name has no effect
A font name in a prompt is not proof that the generator has access to that font file. Use a prepared text/logo reference for layout guidance, or typeset the final copy in an editor with the licensed font.
The reference image changes the design too much
Adjust Structure Strength toward closer adherence and use a separate Style reference for appearance. If the reference must be reproduced exactly, use it as a guide and overlay the real lettering in a design editor.

The API uses the wrong font or a fallback
Verify the font’s exact PostScript name and, for custom-file workflows, that the href points to a supported cloud-storage resource. Configure missing-font behavior explicitly. Adobe documents ArialMT as the default when no other behavior is configured, so silent substitution can explain unexpected output.

The API cannot use an Adobe Font
Check the account’s Fonts entitlement and product profile, and verify that the API feature is available for the account. Adobe marks Photoshop API v2 Adobe Fonts selection as beta; use an accessible custom font resource or a post-render editor workflow if that route is unavailable.
The font works in an editor but not in an app integration
Check the integration’s font limitations and the account/editor context. Canva’s app documentation specifically excludes uploading or defining custom fonts through apps, using Canva Pro fonts, and downloading underlying font files.

Should I generate the text with the image or add it afterward?
Add it afterward when exact spelling, branding, or repeatable typography matters. Generate lettering in-image for exploration or when an approximate treatment is acceptable.
