To screenshot a web page in Cursor, use its integrated Browser tool: ask Agent to open the page and capture a screenshot. To supply an image from another capture tool, configure an MCP server that returns image content; Cursor can attach that image to chat for analysis when the selected model supports images. These are distinct workflows: Browser captures a page in Cursor’s browser, while an MCP image tool hands Cursor an image captured elsewhere.

Choose the screenshot workflow that fits

What you need Use What provides the image
Capture a website page in Cursor Cursor’s integrated Browser tool Cursor-controlled browser, directed by Agent
Send an image produced by another service or tool to Cursor A custom or Marketplace MCP server with an image-returning tool The server captures or obtains the image; MCP carries it to Cursor
Capture your own desktop rather than a page in Cursor’s browser Cursor’s computer-use worker workflow A worker with the required platform setup and permissions

Cursor’s Browser documentation describes screenshots as visual representations that help Agent understand layout and confirm browser actions. MCP image content is a handoff format: it does not, by itself, capture a browser window or desktop. For a custom server, the server’s own documentation determines how it captures, authenticates, and formats the image.

Capture a website screenshot with Cursor Browser

  1. Open Cursor and start an Agent task with the Browser tool available. If the tool is unavailable, check Cursor’s Browser settings and whether browser features are enabled for your organization.
  2. Ask Agent to navigate to the page and capture it. For example: Open https://example.com in the browser and take a screenshot of the page.
  3. Review the resulting screenshot in the conversation. Use a precise follow-up if you need Agent to inspect a particular region, compare the page layout, or confirm an interaction.

This route is suited to inspecting a web page through the browser Cursor controls. For a screenshot of an already-running desktop application, use computer use instead; the browser tool and desktop worker are not interchangeable.

Return a screenshot from an MCP server

Use a custom MCP server when the screenshot must come from an external service, a specialized capture process, or a tool you maintain. Configure or install the server, make its capture tool return image data, and then invoke that tool from Cursor.

Image content format

Cursor documents MCP image returns as base64-encoded data with a MIME type. A tool response has an image content block with the image’s MIME type (for example, image/png) and the base64 data. Cursor attaches returned images to chat; whether the selected model can analyze the image depends on that model’s image support. See Cursor’s MCP documentation for its image-return guidance.

The server is responsible for obtaining the screenshot and returning valid image data. Cursor’s generic MCP guide does not prescribe a universal screenshot capture library, authentication scheme, or server implementation. Check the chosen server’s documentation for those details rather than assuming that enabling MCP creates a capture method.

Configure and verify the server

  1. Add the MCP server through Cursor Marketplace or configure a custom server in mcp.json. Cursor describes MCP servers as connections to external tools and data sources; see the MCP guide.
  2. Confirm the server is enabled and that its screenshot tool is exposed to Cursor. Ask Agent to use the tool by name or describe the task you want it to perform.
  3. Check that the tool response contains an image content block with a correct MIME type and valid base64 data. If the tool reports success but no image appears, inspect the server’s response format and logs.
  4. Ask Agent to analyze the returned image only if the selected model supports image input.

Use MCP screenshots from the Cursor CLI

Cursor says its CLI shares MCP configuration with the editor. After configuring a server, use the CLI to check that it is present and exposes the expected tools:

  • agent mcp list — lists configured MCP servers and their status.
  • agent mcp list-tools <server> — inspects the tools exposed by a server. Replace <server> with its configured name.

Cursor’s documented CLI example for a Browser screenshot task is:

The prompt asks the agent to navigate and take a screenshot; it is not a command-line image-capture library. For current CLI MCP details, see Cursor’s CLI MCP documentation.

Capture a self-hosted desktop

If “screenshot” means the screen of a self-hosted computer rather than a page in Cursor Browser, use the separate computer-use worker workflow. Setup differs by operating system, and a successful worker installation alone does not prove that screenshot permissions or display access work.

macOS

  1. Start the worker with agent worker --computer-use start.
  2. Grant Accessibility and Screen Recording permissions to Cursor Computer Use when prompted or in macOS privacy settings. These permissions must be granted to Cursor Computer Use, not Terminal or the Cursor desktop app.
  3. Run a real computer-use task that produces a screenshot to verify the complete workflow.

agent worker debug can confirm helper installation on macOS, but Cursor notes that it does not report whether Accessibility and Screen Recording permissions are granted.

Linux

Cursor’s computer-use workflow uses X11 and requires the documented desktop packages on the worker. Chrome or Chromium is optional but recommended for browser use. Check Cursor’s computer-use setup documentation for the applicable packages and setup details. Verify the X11 display and complete a task that returns a screenshot; an MCP server returning an image is a different route from capturing the worker’s desktop.

Enterprise browser access and origin controls

For enterprise deployments, administrators can enable browser features and configure origin allowlists. When an allowlist is configured, automatic navigation and MCP tool execution are limited to allowed origins. Manual navigation can still display other origins, but browser tools are blocked there. If an automated screenshot fails only on certain domains, ask an administrator to check the allowlist and the applicable organization settings. See Cursor’s enterprise Browser documentation.

Security and access checks

An MCP server may receive access to tools, data, or credentials, so treat setup as a security decision, not just a screenshot setting. Cursor advises users to verify server sources, review permissions, use restricted API keys, and audit server code for critical integrations. Give a server only the access it needs, and avoid placing broadly privileged secrets in its configuration. See Cursor’s MCP guidance.

Troubleshoot common screenshot failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check
Agent cannot find or use Browser Browser features are unavailable, disabled, or restricted by organization policy. Check Browser availability and ask an enterprise administrator about feature access and origin controls.
Page opens manually but automated navigation or tools are blocked The origin is outside the configured enterprise allowlist. Ask the administrator to review the allowed origins. Manual display of a page does not mean browser tools are permitted there.
MCP server does not appear or its tool is missing The server may not be configured, enabled, connected, or exposing the expected tool. Check the Cursor MCP configuration, then run agent mcp list and agent mcp list-tools <server> in the CLI.
Tool runs but Cursor shows no image The tool response may not contain valid image content, a MIME type, or base64 data. Inspect the server response and logs; verify the image content block and encoding against Cursor’s MCP image guidance.
Image appears, but Agent cannot interpret it The selected model may not support image input. Use a model with image support or use the screenshot for visual reference without requesting image analysis.
macOS worker starts but cannot capture the screen Accessibility or Screen Recording permission may be missing, or granted to the wrong app. Grant both permissions to Cursor Computer Use and test with a real screenshot task. agent worker debug does not confirm these permissions.
Linux desktop capture does not work The worker may lack the required X11 display or desktop packages. Check the worker’s X11 setup and required packages in Cursor’s computer-use documentation; test an actual screenshot task.
Screenshot tool cannot access the target site The custom server’s capture method, authentication, or network access may be failing. Check that server’s documentation and logs. Cursor’s generic MCP image format does not define the capture mechanism or access policy.

Or skip the browser setup

If you want a website screenshot without setting up a browser workflow or a capture server, ScreenshotNeo can return a screenshot or PDF from one GET request. Its cookie-consent handling, popup and chat-widget removal can be turned off individually. It reports page verdict and billing status in response headers: bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed. It also provides an MCP server with take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents, including Cursor.

FAQ

Does MCP itself take the screenshot?

No. MCP connects Cursor to tools. A screenshot tool or Cursor’s Browser/worker must capture the image; MCP can then return image content to Cursor.

Can I take a screenshot of a local development site?

The Cursor Browser route is intended for browser navigation and screenshots, but access to a particular local address can depend on Cursor’s environment and organization settings. For a custom server, check whether its capture environment can reach that address.

Does a returned screenshot automatically become a file on my computer?

Cursor’s MCP documentation describes returning images to chat for viewing and analysis. It does not establish that every image response is automatically saved as a local file; use the server’s own output or save/export options when you need a file.
