In Google Sheets on a computer, select the cells you want to change, then choose Format > Number and select a currency or number format. To hide the dollar sign but keep the value numeric, switch to a number format without a currency symbol; you do not need to delete characters or use a formula.
Apply currency formatting to cells
Currency formatting changes how a numeric value appears in the selected cells. To apply it in the computer version of Google Sheets:
- Select a cell or range of cells.
- Open Format > Number.
- Choose a currency format that matches the way you want the values displayed.
Google documents this menu route for computer use in its formatting instructions. The available formats and their appearance can vary with the spreadsheet’s locale and Google’s interface.

If the built-in currency choice does not suit your needs, select the cells and open Format > Number > Custom currency. Choose the currency and adjust display properties such as the number of decimal places. Google’s number-format guidance also explains how custom number, date, and currency formats can control what appears in a cell.

Remove the dollar sign without changing the number
If a cell contains a numeric value displayed as currency, the dollar sign comes from its format—not from the stored number. Select the cells and choose a number format without a currency symbol from Format > Number. The value remains numeric, so it can still be used in arithmetic and other spreadsheet operations.
If the standard number options do not give you the display you need, apply a suitable custom number format. Google explains custom format patterns and locale-dependent separators in its number-format documentation. Check the cells after applying the format, since separators and default display conventions can differ by locale.

Set the spreadsheet’s default currency with its locale
For a one-off display change, format the relevant cells. If you want to change the spreadsheet’s default currency, date, and number conventions, change its locale instead. On a computer, open File > Settings > Locale, choose the locale, and save the settings.

When to use the DOLLAR formula
Use DOLLAR(number, [number_of_places]) when you specifically want a formula to return currency-formatted text. Google says the result is text, and the currency output is locale-specific. That is different from applying a cell format: for a numeric value that should simply display with or without a currency symbol, format the cell instead. See Google’s DOLLAR function documentation.
