Use contract tests to check that each microservice still honors the messages exchanged at its boundaries as services evolve. In a consumer-driven Pact workflow, the consumer test records the interaction the consumer actually needs, and the provider verifies that its implementation can satisfy it. Run both sides in CI and use the resulting compatibility evidence before deploying independently.

What contract testing checks

A contract test checks an integration boundary by exercising an application against an agreed message interaction. For an HTTP service, that interaction consists of a request and response. For asynchronous systems, it can describe a message read from or written to a queue. Pact describes a contract as “a collection of interactions.” Pact documentation

These tests target a narrower question than “Does the whole system work?”: can a consumer and provider communicate in the ways the consumer depends on, without requiring the complete system to be deployed for every check?

Consumer and provider are roles

The terms describe what an application does in a particular interaction, not necessarily its product name or overall architecture:

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • HTTP: the consumer initiates the request; the provider returns the response.
  • Messaging: the consumer reads the message; the provider produces or writes it.

This role-based definition also works when a service communicates through events rather than a direct request/response call. How Pact works

How to add consumer-driven contract tests

1. Map service boundaries and actual consumers

For every integration, record which application initiates or reads the interaction and which responds or produces it. Start with boundaries where a change could break another service or team. In event-driven systems, identify the producer and each consumer of the relevant message; do not assume the terms “client” and “server” fit.

2. Define interactions around consumer needs

Write consumer tests for the requests, responses, or message content that the consumer actually uses. Specify the minimum fields and behavior required by that consumer rather than incidental details that it ignores. A Pact contract is a set of concrete interactions, not a complete inventory of every possible valid API state. Pact documentation

3. Generate the contract by running the consumer tests

In Pact’s consumer-driven approach, the contract is generated as the consumer tests execute. Keep contract creation in that test workflow; separately hand-authoring the contract defeats the purpose of recording interactions from consumer behavior. Pact consumer documentation

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Verify the provider implementation

Run provider verification against the provider’s code, using provider state that makes the expected response or message possible. The consumer test checks the consumer against a mock provider; by itself, it does not prove the real provider fulfills the contract. Provider verification supplies that other half of the compatibility check. Pact provider documentation

5. Share contracts and use verification evidence in CI

Make contract generation and provider verification repeatable in the responsible teams’ CI workflows. A Pact Broker can coordinate publishing and retrieving contracts across pipelines; integrate it with CI so teams can see verification results when deciding whether versions are compatible for deployment. Pact’s CI/CD guidance describes a staged route to automation, not one pipeline that fits every organization. Adapt it to existing release practices and team responsibilities. Pact CI/CD guide

Where contract tests fit in CI/CD

A practical pipeline needs to make the relationship between versions visible before a deployment decision. The exact job placement varies by organization, but the useful sequence is:

  1. Run consumer tests and generate the interaction contract as part of the consumer’s normal build.
  2. Publish or otherwise share that contract with the provider team through the agreed mechanism.
  3. Run provider verification against the provider implementation and the required provider state.
  4. Make verification results available to the teams considering the versions for release, and check that evidence before deploying independently.

Pact recommends integrating the Broker with CI infrastructure. Contract-change-triggered verification should be coordinated deliberately: Pact’s FAQ notes that running this verification separately from the provider’s other CI build can avoid another team’s change unexpectedly disrupting that build. Decide with both teams where that check belongs rather than treating a single trigger pattern as universal. Pact FAQ

Set up provider state deliberately

Provider verification must arrange data or conditions that let the provider produce the expected outcome. Keep that setup repeatable and controlled. The Pact FAQ cautions that calling a public API to establish provider state can make tests slower and more brittle than ordinary provider verification; prefer an approach appropriate to the provider’s own test environment. What the tests prove—and what they do not

Consumer tests show that consumer code sends an expected request or handles an expected response from a mock provider. Provider verification shows whether provider code fulfills the recorded interactions. Together, they provide compatibility evidence for that boundary without deploying the full system for every check. How Pact works

They are not proof of every end-to-end property, operational reliability, or business outcome across a distributed workflow. Keep appropriate end-to-end, component, and operational checks for questions the interaction contracts do not cover.

Consumer contracts and schema conformance serve different goals

Consumer-driven contracts capture concrete interactions current consumers rely on. Provider conformance checks implementation against a static API specification such as OpenAPI, helping detect drift between code and published documentation. A provider-only schema check does not by itself establish that consumers call the service correctly or that all their expectations are met. Teams can use both when they need both kinds of assurance. Choose the approach for the assurance you need

Approach What it describes Useful when What it does not establish alone
Consumer-driven interaction contract Concrete requests, responses, or messages used by a consumer Teams need executable evidence that current consumers’ needs are met at a service boundary Every valid state in the API schema or whole-system behavior
Provider conformance to a specification Provider implementation compared with a broader static API description such as OpenAPI Teams need to check that implementation and published specification remain aligned Whether consumers make correct calls or whether the provider meets all consumer-specific expectations

The approaches need not be substitutes. Select based on what behavior needs to be described, who owns the expectation, how provider verification will run, whether the boundary is HTTP or asynchronous messaging, and how evidence will reach the release decision. The Pact documentation cited here does not establish a current framework ranking, comprehensive language compatibility matrix, or pricing comparison.

Common failures and practical fixes

  • The consumer test passes, but the live integration fails: a mock-provider test does not verify provider code. Add provider verification against the generated contract.
  • Provider verification cannot produce the expected response: establish the required provider state reproducibly before the interaction is checked.
  • Verification is flaky or slow: inspect provider-state setup, especially if it calls a public API. Pact’s FAQ warns that this can add brittleness and delay compared with ordinary provider verification.
  • Contract changes disrupt an unrelated provider build: coordinate contract-triggered verification with the provider team; consider running it separately from the provider’s other CI build.
  • Contracts become cumbersome or fail over irrelevant response details: remove assertions for details consumers do not use and keep interactions focused on real needs.
  • Teams treat a passing contract suite as proof the whole workflow works: retain end-to-end and other tests for behavior beyond the specific service boundaries covered.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server, a separate tool for capturing pages rather than testing service contracts. One GET request can return an image or PDF. Its clean-shot options accept cookie or consent banners like a visitor and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; those steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, with response headers indicating the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents.
