To build a website with Codex, open it in the context of your project, give it a clear and limited brief, then review and refine the code and the rendered site. Codex can inspect project files, edit code, and run local tools; it is a coding agent to work with, not a guarantee of a finished, production-ready website from one prompt.
Choose how you want to build and share the site
For a site based on a code repository—or one where you want to use local development tools—start Codex in the project context through the CLI or another coding surface. The Codex CLI guide describes a workflow for inspecting a repository, planning and editing changes, running local tools, and reviewing the result.
If you want an interactive site or app that can be previewed and shared, Codex Sites is a separate option. Its availability depends on your account, region, and workspace settings. The current Help Center guidance says Sites is available on paid ChatGPT plans except Free and Go in supported regions, and is unavailable in the European Economic Area, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. Workspace administrators control site creation and public publishing.

Sites availability is time-sensitive: the Help Center page accessed on October 4, 2026 gives the current eligibility guidance, while OpenAI’s June 2, 2026 announcement described an earlier preview rollout for Business and Enterprise teams through the Codex app. Check the Help Center before choosing Sites.

Give Codex a brief it can act on
Describe the website’s purpose and audience, the pages or sections it needs, and what visitors should be able to do. Include the visual direction and any relevant screenshots, design references, or assets. State project constraints—such as the existing framework, files to preserve, and accessibility expectations—and, if you know them, how to run the site and which checks to perform.
OpenAI’s Codex best-practices guide recommends making tasks well-scoped and structuring requests like an issue or pull request description. Include relevant file paths, component names, diffs, or documentation when they clarify the work.

Adapt this prompt template to your project:
Build a responsive website for [audience] that helps them [main task]. Include [pages or sections] and these interactions: [specific behaviors]. Follow the visual direction in [screenshots or design reference] and use the existing project conventions. First inspect the repository and tell me your plan. Then implement the site, run the available checks, and summarize the changes, assumptions, and anything I should review manually.
Build, inspect, and refine in passes
- Start with the project context. Open Codex in the project directory using your chosen coding surface. Describe the task and let Codex inspect the existing files before making changes.
- Review the plan. For a broad change, ask Codex to explain what it found and how it intends to approach the work. Correct mistaken assumptions or narrow the scope before implementation.
- Inspect the edits. Review the diff as work progresses. Ask Codex to explain changes you do not understand rather than accepting them blindly.
- Run the project’s checks. Use the development and test commands that belong to your project. Codex can run local tools, but the result still needs human review.
- Check the rendered site. Inspect the page at the viewport sizes that matter to your audience. Give Codex specific corrections—for example, adjust navigation behavior, spacing, text hierarchy, or contrast—instead of asking vaguely to “make it better.”
- Repeat for focused fixes. OpenAI describes visual and design context and targeted annotations for refining a particular area or element. The Codex CLI also supports steering the task and inspecting edits.
These steps reflect the CLI workflow and Codex’s visual and annotation capabilities described in OpenAI’s CLI guide, Codex app announcement, and June 2, 2026 workflow announcement. They do not establish that generated work is automatically correct or production-ready.

Share a preview or deploy the code
Use Codex Sites for a shareable workspace site
Describe the interactive site you want, review its generated preview, then use the sharing controls available to you. Before relying on Sites, confirm plan and regional eligibility and check whether your workspace administrator permits creation and public publishing in the Help Center guidance.
Use a deployment skill for a code-project site
OpenAI’s February 2, 2026 Codex app announcement names deployment skills for Cloudflare, Netlify, Render, and Vercel. A named integration is not a complete deployment recipe: consult the selected provider’s current documentation for build settings, environment variables, domain configuration, and other requirements before publishing. The available skills may change.
