Claude can control ComfyUI through an MCP server, but you do not need to build a custom one for the basic local workflow: ComfyUI now documents an official comfy-mcp server. It exposes tools for checking ComfyUI, running workflows, monitoring jobs, and retrieving outputs. The local route uses your own ComfyUI installation and hardware; Comfy Cloud is a hosted alternative for compatible clients.
What an MCP server does in a Claude–ComfyUI setup
Model Context Protocol (MCP) is an open standard for connecting AI applications to external tools and systems. Claude is the MCP client; an MCP server makes capabilities available for Claude to discover and invoke. The protocol itself does not generate images. ComfyUI runs the workflow, using either a local installation or hosted compute.
In a typical request, you describe the task to Claude, Claude selects an exposed ComfyUI tool, and ComfyUI runs the relevant workflow. With the local server, that can mean checking ComfyUI’s status, submitting a workflow JSON, waiting for the job to finish, and retrieving its output. See the MCP introduction and ComfyUI documentation.
Choose local ComfyUI or Comfy Cloud
ComfyUI recommends Cloud as the simpler option for new users and for clients such as claude.ai and the Claude Desktop chat app. The local connection is aimed at people who already run ComfyUI or primarily use coding agents such as Claude Code. Their trade-offs differ:

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| Decision | Local Comfy MCP | Comfy Cloud MCP |
|---|---|---|
| Compute | Your own computer and GPU | Comfy Cloud GPUs |
| Setup | ComfyUI workspace, Python, comfy-cli, and comfy-mcp |
Hosted endpoint and account authentication |
| Models and nodes | Models, LoRAs, and custom nodes installed locally | Models and nodes supported by Cloud |
| Client compatibility | Requires an MCP client that can launch a local stdio subprocess | Remote HTTP connection for compatible clients |
| Compute cost | Local generations use your hardware; partner models may use credits | Generation requires an active Comfy Cloud subscription; ComfyUI documentation described five free runs for new users as of October 2026 |
| Output handling | Files are written under the local workspace output folder | Outputs are retrieved through a temporary signed URL and download command |
The Cloud endpoint is https://cloud.comfy.org/mcp. The local server runs as a process over stdio and does not have a remote URL. Connection details and offers can change; consult ComfyUI’s MCP documentation before configuring a client.
Set up the official local ComfyUI MCP server
Check prerequisites
- Python 3.10 or later.
comfy-cliversion 1.14.0 or later available on your path.- A ComfyUI workspace. If you intend to run workflows, ComfyUI must also be running; the MCP server does not start it implicitly.
- An MCP client that can launch a local stdio server. This makes the local route a better fit for coding clients than for browser-only clients.
Install and launch ComfyUI
- Install the required CLI:
pip install "comfy-cli>=1.14.0". - If you do not already have a workspace, create one with
comfy install. - Install the MCP server package:
pip install comfy-mcp. - Launch ComfyUI with
comfy launchand leave it running while using execution tools.
Register it in Claude Code
Add the server with Claude Code’s MCP command:
claude mcp add comfy-mcp -e COMFY_BIN=/path/to/venv/bin/comfy -- comfy-mcp
Replace /path/to/venv/bin/comfy with the absolute path to the comfy executable in your environment. Set COMFY_BIN when Claude Code cannot find that executable through its inherited environment. For Claude Desktop, ComfyUI documents an mcpServers configuration example; after editing the configuration, restart Claude Desktop. Use the current ComfyUI MCP guide for its exact configuration details.

What you can ask Claude to do
The documented local server offers tools for checking server status; running, polling, or watching workflow jobs; retrieving output files; launching or stopping ComfyUI; searching templates, nodes, and local models; inspecting installed custom nodes; and validating a workflow before a run. A simple starting request is: “Confirm my local ComfyUI is running, then run the workflow at ~/workflows/txt2img.json and show me the image.”
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThese are capabilities of the documented comfy-mcp server, not verified details of the first-person post named in this article’s original title. Plan for local hardware and workflow requirements
ComfyUI’s current hardware guidance is vendor advice, not an independent benchmark. It describes a dedicated GPU with 24 GB or more of VRAM as suitable for most tasks, including video; 8–24 GB as suitable for images, with video potentially slow or unable to fit; and less than 8 GB as a reason to consider Cloud. The guide also recommends Cloud for current large open-weight models on Mac, which it says will not run at workable speed on Apple GPU. Actual feasibility depends on the model and workflow. Check ComfyUI’s current hardware guidance against the models and custom nodes you intend to use.

For ordinary local workflow control, the official server already covers common operations, so a custom implementation is not a prerequisite. Building one is more relevant when you need a different client, narrower tool permissions, custom workflow orchestration, or behavior not offered by the existing tools. The original post’s exact implementation cannot be assessed from its accessible listing.

A custom server has two distinct jobs: MCP integration and ComfyUI execution. Its design should make clear how it:

Protect your machine and credentials
An MCP server can receive access to tools, files, or execution paths, so connecting one is a trust decision. Anthropic advises Claude Code users to verify that they trust each server and notes that servers fetching external content can introduce prompt-injection risk. Before connecting:
Quick Recap
- Review the server’s source and provenance, especially if it can access files or run commands.
- Grant only the capabilities needed for the workflows you intend to use.
- Keep credentials out of configuration files checked into a repository.
- Consider how external workflow content or fetched data could influence tool use.
See Anthropic’s Claude Code MCP guidance.
