To give Claude a visual snapshot of a webpage, capture it with Microsoft Edge’s built-in Web Capture, then add the saved screenshot to your Claude conversation. Press Ctrl + Shift + S in Edge and choose Capture full page or Capture area. A screenshot shows what the page looked like; it does not give Claude live access to the page. For live information or page text, use Claude’s web search or web fetch instead.
What “web capture” means with Claude
“Web capture” can mean two different things: making an image of a webpage, or giving an AI access to information on the web. Microsoft Edge’s documented Web Capture feature makes a screenshot. Claude’s web search and web fetch retrieve web information; they are separate workflows, not an Edge-to-Claude integration.
Anthropic says that when a question benefits from current information, Claude can invoke search to ground its response in live-web content. If you already have a particular URL, web fetch can retrieve and analyze its page content when web search is enabled. A long page may use substantial Claude usage, particularly on free accounts. Choose based on the question: a screenshot preserves visual context but may not expose selectable text or up-to-date page content. Search and fetch can supply current or URL-specific information, while a connector may offer broader access and actions.

Capture a webpage in Microsoft Edge and give it to Claude
Microsoft’s guide documents full-page and selected-area captures. Its instructions are written for the United States market; Microsoft notes that availability and functionality can vary by region and may change. See Microsoft’s Edge screenshot guide for the current steps.
- Open the page in Edge. Navigate to the webpage you want Claude to see. If the relevant content appears only after scrolling or interaction, make it visible before capturing.
- Open Web Capture. Select Settings and more (the three-dot menu), then choose Web Capture. Alternatively, press Ctrl + Shift + S.
- Choose a capture mode. Select Capture full page to capture the whole webpage, or Capture area to select a particular region.
- Review and save the result. For an area capture, Microsoft documents options to copy or mark up the capture. Save the screenshot to your device so you can add it to Claude.
- Attach it in Claude and ask a focused question. Use the attachment option available in your Claude client to select the saved image. Ask about the visible content, such as “What does this error message say?” or “Compare the two prices shown.”
Edge documents screenshot creation and saving, not a built-in handoff to Claude. The precise attachment or clipboard options depend on the Claude client you use. If your client does not accept the image, use a supported client or another way to provide the relevant text.
Improve the screenshot before asking
- Use a full-page capture when the relationship between sections matters; use an area capture to focus attention on a chart, control, or error.
- Make sure the page has finished loading and that the target content is visible. A screenshot cannot include content that had not rendered when you captured it.
- For small text, capture a tighter area rather than shrinking an entire long page into one image.
- Ask Claude to distinguish what it can read from what is unclear. Do not treat a visual interpretation as confirmation of hidden page data or a live page state.
When to use Claude search, fetch, or a connector instead
Use web search for current public information
Ask Claude a question that benefits from recent public sources and use web search. Depending on the interface version, you may be able to select Web search, while Anthropic’s current help guidance says Claude may search when useful without a separate toggle. The available controls and eligibility can vary; consult the Claude Help Center if you do not see the option.

Use web fetch for a specific page
When you have a URL, ask Claude to retrieve or analyze that page using web fetch, if enabled. This is often more useful than a screenshot for text-heavy content. Be aware that fetching a long page can consume substantial usage, particularly on a free account. A screenshot may be preferable when appearance, positioning, or visual relationships are central.

A connector is not simply a screenshot source: it can expose a service’s data and, depending on permissions, actions. Anthropic distinguishes remote connectors, which work across Claude surfaces, from local desktop extensions, which run on the computer and are limited to Claude Desktop and Claude Code. Exact availability depends on the Claude client and account. Its guide to desktop and web connectors explains the distinction.
For local MCP desktop extensions, Anthropic documents installation through Claude Desktop > Settings > Extensions for directory-listed extensions. For a custom .mcpb extension, the documented path is Settings > Extensions > Advanced settings > Extension Developer > Install Extension…. Follow the local MCP server setup guide; do not assume a local extension is available in Claude web or mobile.

Anthropic’s Research mode is also distinct from screenshot capture. It uses web search and can investigate web sources and connected internal context; it does not turn a screenshot into live browsing.
Permissions and privacy when connecting tools
Review a connector’s requested permissions before connecting it. Remote MCP connectors may be able to read, create, modify, or delete data according to the access granted. Anthropic recommends connecting only to trusted servers, reviewing permissions, watching for prompt injection or unexpected behavior, and approving actions carefully. Read its custom remote connector guidance before granting access.
A screenshot is a static image, but it can still reveal sensitive information visible in the browser. Check for account details, personal data, or confidential material before attaching it. For a third-party extension, check its current permissions and listing rather than assuming that a store description proves how it handles data.

Troubleshooting
Web Capture does not open
Try the documented shortcut, Ctrl + Shift + S, or open the three-dot Settings and more menu and look for Web Capture. Edge labels and availability can vary by region and change over time; consult Microsoft’s current guide if the option is missing.
The screenshot is incomplete or hard to read
Check that the page finished loading and that the relevant content was present before capture. Capture the page again, or use Capture area to make small text legible. For content that appears only after an interaction, expose it before taking the screenshot.
Claude cannot answer from the image
Confirm that the screenshot was saved and attached in the Claude client, then ask about content that is actually visible. If the task depends on live facts or a page’s text rather than appearance, use web search or web fetch instead. Client and account options may differ.
Web search or fetch is unavailable
Check Claude’s current help guidance for feature availability and the controls in your client. Web search and fetch are separate from Edge capture; a screenshot alone does not enable them. If a long-page fetch consumes too much usage, narrow your request or provide a relevant screenshot or excerpt.
A connector asks for more access than expected
Pause before approving. Verify the connector and server, review its permissions, and decide whether its requested actions are necessary. If the scope is not appropriate, do not connect it; use a screenshot or web search for a narrower task.
Frequently asked workflow choice
Use Edge Web Capture when Claude needs to inspect the appearance of a page. Use web search for current public information, web fetch for a particular URL’s content, and a connector when you deliberately want reusable access to a service or local tool. The methods can complement each other, but they provide different kinds of context and access.
