To use Claude for a document, spreadsheet, or draft, give it the source material, state the job and intended output, then check its response against the source before relying on it. Use a regular chat for a one-off task, a Project when the same files and instructions should inform recurring chats, and an Artifact when you want a substantial result you can edit or reuse.

Summarize a document with Claude

  1. Start a Claude chat and upload a supported file or paste the relevant text. Check Anthropic’s document upload guidance for current formats and limits.
  2. Describe the reader and the result you need. For example: “Summarize this report for a nontechnical manager in 250 words. List its main claims, decisions, and unanswered questions.”
  3. For a long document, ask for a section-by-section outline first, then request a synthesis across the sections. This makes it easier to notice missing topics or conflicting points.
  4. Ask Claude to distinguish statements explicitly made in the document from its own interpretation. Where the document and interface allow it, request page numbers, headings, or short supporting quotations for important claims.
  5. Compare consequential details with the original. A polished summary can still omit a qualification, misread a passage, or overstate a conclusion.

Anthropic lists summarizing text, documents, conversations, and books among Claude’s possible uses. Its examples describe capabilities, not a guaranteed prompt or complete coverage; the instructions above are a practical way to make the requested scope clearer.

Analyze a spreadsheet or other data

Claude can help inspect data and explain patterns, but treat it as an analysis aid rather than a verified statistical package. Anthropic describes chart-data analysis and research workflows involving datasets, findings, and hypotheses; that does not establish that every calculation or interpretation is correct.

  1. Upload a supported data file. If the file is an XLSX workbook, Anthropic’s upload guidance says the analysis tool must be enabled.
  2. Explain what each row represents, define the column names or units that may be unclear, and identify the date range and any comparison groups.
  3. State the decision or question before asking for analysis. For instance: “Compare monthly returns by region. Show a table of the largest changes, explain the method, and flag missing or unusual values.”
  4. Ask Claude to show assumptions and calculation steps, and to label observed patterns separately from possible explanations.
  5. Recalculate important figures from the source data or with an independent method before using them in a consequential decision.

Specifying the measure, comparison, period, and output format helps you judge whether the answer addresses the question you actually asked. It does not remove the need to check the work.

Draft and revise text

Claude can draft across formats, from short messages to longer creative work. Anthropic Help Center puts it this way: “Claude can help you draft everything from a text message or an email to a screenplay or a novel.” That describes a range of possible tasks, not a guarantee that a draft is accurate or ready to publish.

  • Set the brief: give the purpose, audience, tone, length, format, required facts, and claims or phrases to avoid.
  • Provide grounding: if the text must reflect particular documents, include them and ask Claude to flag missing evidence instead of filling gaps.
  • Revise in focused passes: work on structure first, then accuracy and completeness, then voice and copyediting.
  • Verify source-dependent details: check names, dates, quotations, and claims against their sources before publication.

For example, instead of asking “Write an update,” specify who will read it, what changed, what they need to do, and the desired length. Review the result as a draft, especially where a factual claim depends on material Claude did not receive.

Choose between chat, Projects, and Artifacts

Use Best fit How it works
Chat A one-off summary, analysis, or draft Provide the task and source material in the conversation.
Project Recurring work that uses shared files or instructions Project knowledge can provide context across chats within that Project. Add material to the knowledge base if it should be available in multiple chats.
Artifact A substantial, self-contained output you expect to revise or reuse Anthropic documents editing, versioning, copying, and downloading for artifacts.

Use a Project for recurring context

Projects are useful when you return to the same subject and want common documents or instructions available in separate project chats. Anthropic’s Projects guidance says context is not automatically shared across chats unless it is added to project knowledge. The page describes Projects as available on paid plans and says retrieval-augmented generation activates as project knowledge nears context limits. Check your account and the current product behavior, since eligibility and features can change.

Use an Artifact for a reusable result

An Artifact is suited to a substantial, self-contained draft or output—such as a document, code, diagram, or interactive component—that you want to edit or reuse. A short answer that is useful only in the current conversation does not need to become an Artifact. See Anthropic’s Artifacts guidance for its documented editing and reuse features.

Check file formats, upload limits, and PDF visuals

Anthropic’s upload guide lists PDF, DOCX, CSV, TXT, HTML, ODT, RTF, EPUB, JSON, and XLSX. XLSX upload requires the analysis tool to be enabled. Product limits can change, so check the current upload guide when preparing files.

Upload detail Anthropic Help Center guidance (accessed 2026)
Files in a chat Up to 20 files per chat.
Size per chat-uploaded file 30 MB per file.
Files in Project knowledge Unlimited file count, subject to the total content fitting within the context window; additional token limits may apply to extracted text.

PDF handling has a separate visual-analysis qualification. The same guide says Claude 4 models, Claude 3.7 Sonnet, and Claude 3.5 Sonnet can analyze text and visual elements in PDFs under 100 pages uploaded to chats or Projects. For PDFs over 100 pages, or when using other models, the guide says Claude processes text only. For non-PDF files, images embedded in the file are not interpreted as images. These model and page-count details are the Help Center’s stated conditions, not timeless product guarantees.
