Charles Proxy helps you discover the HTTP requests a webpage makes and inspect the responses that may contain the data you need. Configure a browser to use Charles, record a narrowly scoped interaction, enable SSL Proxying for the target host when necessary, and inspect the request and response in Structure or Sequence view. Then reproduce the smallest authorized request in your scraper. Charles is a debugging proxy for investigating traffic—not a crawler or scraping API.
What Charles Proxy can—and cannot—do for scraping
Charles records HTTP and HTTPS request-response pairs into a session so you can inspect what a browser sends and receives. That makes it useful when a page’s visible content is assembled from API calls, form submissions, or other network requests. The request details can reveal a URL, parameters, headers, cookies, and authentication fields; the response may contain the data in JSON, HTML, or another format.
Charles does not, by itself, turn a website into a scraper job. You still need to identify the relevant request, decide which fields are necessary, and write code that makes the request and handles its response. The official documentation describes recording and inspection, not a crawler, scheduler, or scraping API.
Use this workflow only for sites, accounts, and data you are authorized to access. Seeing a request in a capture does not grant permission to reproduce it, bypass access controls, or ignore a site’s terms.

Set up Charles and capture one browser action
- Install and open Charles. The official configuration page displayed version 5.2.1 and a free-trial download when accessed on September 29, 2026; that is a page-access observation, not a claim about a release date or what version will be current when you read this. Check the official configuration page for current downloads and setup details.
- Route your browser or test client through Charles. Configure its HTTP proxy or SOCKS proxy to use Charles. HTTP proxy mode is the usual starting point; choose deliberately if connection concurrency and timing matter (see below).
- Clear the current session. Start with a clean capture so older requests do not obscure the interaction you are investigating.
- Turn recording on and perform one target action. For example, load the page or submit the search form that should trigger the data request. Avoid unrelated browsing during the recording. Charles describes recording as its primary function (Recording documentation).
- Stop recording and narrow the results. Use host and path filtering or Focus to reduce noise. A small capture is easier to understand and less likely to contain unrelated sensitive information.
Find the request that returns the data
Use Structure view to organize traffic by host and path. Use Sequence view when the order of calls matters—for example, when an initial page load is followed by a data request. Select a likely request and inspect its URL, query or form parameters, headers, cookies, authentication fields, and response body in the relevant viewers.
Do not assume that the first request to the site is the useful one. A page may make many calls for scripts, images, analytics, and interface state. Look for the response that actually contains the data you want, then check whether the request depends on an earlier call, a session cookie, or a token. Charles documents tools to copy or save requests and responses, and to export sessions; exporting can help preserve evidence for review, but it does not make credentials safe to share.
- URL and parameters: Identify the endpoint and any query-string or form values that change the result.
- Headers and cookies: Note which values appear necessary. Treat cookies, tokens, and authorization fields as secrets.
- Request body: For a POST or other body-bearing request, inspect the submitted form fields or JSON rather than trying to reconstruct the call from the URL alone.
- Response: Confirm that the response contains the target records and determine its format before writing parsing code.
Inspect HTTPS safely
HTTPS traffic is encrypted between the browser and server, so inspecting it through Charles requires SSL Proxying for the host you are investigating and a Charles Root Certificate trusted by the controlled client. Charles acts as a man-in-the-middle HTTPS proxy: it dynamically generates a certificate for the server and signs it with its own root certificate. If the client does not trust that root, it will show a certificate warning. See Charles SSL Proxying documentation.

- In Charles, enable SSL Proxying and add the specific target hostname rather than enabling it indiscriminately.
- Install and trust the Charles Root Certificate in the browser or test environment you control, following the current certificate instructions for that environment.
- Repeat the target interaction and check whether the HTTPS request and response are now readable.
- When finished, remove trust or disable the proxy configuration if the environment no longer needs it.
Do not install a proxy root certificate on a device or profile you do not control. A trusted interception certificate allows Charles to reveal credentials, cookies, and request data passing through the configured proxy; keep this setup limited to authorized debugging.
Choose HTTP or SOCKS proxy mode deliberately
HTTP proxy mode is a practical default for a first capture. Charles documents that browser connection limits can change when an HTTP proxy is present. SOCKS mode avoids including the proxy in the browser’s connection-limit calculation and can better preserve ordinary browser concurrency behavior. If a page behaves differently under capture—especially when many requests run at once—try the other mode in a controlled comparison and note the configuration used. Do not treat timing from one proxy mode as a universal property of the site.
Turn the captured request into scraper code
First reproduce the request that returns the data, not the entire browser session. Carry over only the URL, parameters, headers, cookies, and tokens that testing shows are necessary. The example below is a template: replace the endpoint and parameter names with values from your authorized capture, and do not paste real session credentials into source control.

For a form submission, use the appropriate method and body fields; for a request that requires a cookie or authorization token, supply it only through a secure secret store or environment configuration. If the response is HTML rather than JSON, parse the response text using a parser appropriate to its structure. Avoid copying every browser header by default: unnecessary or stale headers make a script brittle and can expose private data.
Preserve only what is required
- Start with the endpoint and parameters, then add a header or cookie only if omitting it changes the result.
- Keep credentials outside committed code and redact them from saved sessions or shared exports.
- Use bounded timeouts and check HTTP errors before parsing; a successful connection does not guarantee a successful response.
- Recheck the request if the site changes its endpoint or authentication flow. A copied browser request is a snapshot of one interaction, not a promise that the interface will remain stable.
Keep captures manageable and repeatable
Charles stores recorded headers and content in memory or temporary files. A recording can stop when its configured data limit is exceeded. Keep sessions short, clear between investigations, and avoid recording unrelated accounts or sensitive applications. For repeatable capture tests, Charles supports headless mode, alternate configuration files, opening saved sessions, and starting with throttling enabled. Its web interface can start and stop recording, activate tools, control throttling, clear sessions, and export sessions.

Common problems and fixes
- No requests appear: Confirm recording is on and the browser or test client is actually configured to use Charles as its proxy. Clear the session, retry one page action, and check for host or path filters hiding the traffic.
- HTTPS details are unreadable or the browser warns about a certificate: Enable SSL Proxying for the target hostname and trust the Charles Root Certificate in the controlled client. Do not bypass a warning by trusting an unknown certificate or using a device you do not control.
- The request is visible but the response does not contain the data: Inspect the surrounding sequence and identify whether a later request returns the records, or whether the call depends on parameters, cookies, or a preceding interaction.
- The copied request fails in code: Compare the method, endpoint, query or body fields, and only the headers or cookies proven necessary. Check the HTTP status and response body before assuming the parser is at fault; session credentials may have expired.
- Pages behave differently or load more slowly under capture: Consider whether HTTP proxy mode is affecting browser connection limits. Compare with SOCKS mode when concurrency behavior matters, keeping the rest of the test conditions consistent.
- Recording stops unexpectedly: The configured data limit may have been reached. Narrow the capture to the target host and action, clear the session, and review the data-limit configuration.
- An exported capture contains secrets: Redact cookies, tokens, and authorization values before sharing it, and store the original securely. Prefer a minimal saved request over a full session when that is sufficient.

When Charles is the right tool
Use Charles when you need to understand what an authorized browser interaction sends and receives, especially when locating the request behind a page or preserving a session for review. Use the browser’s ordinary experience as the starting point, inspect a small capture, and implement only the necessary request in code. If what you need is a rendered screenshot instead of the page’s underlying data, a screenshot service is a different tool for that narrower task.
