Browserless can capture a web page on demand; to monitor visual changes, pair that capture with a recurring trigger, stored screenshots, a comparison step, and a notification or review path. Its documented screenshot API handles capture, not the entire monitoring pipeline.

What Browserless does—and what your monitor still needs

Browserless provides managed headless browsers and screenshot capture APIs, and it can also be self-hosted with Docker. It supports REST and GraphQL APIs as well as Puppeteer or Playwright connections. For a visual monitor, treat it as the page-rendering and capture component unless you have separately assembled scheduling, image retention, comparison, and alerting. Browserless overview

A useful monitoring pipeline has four jobs around capture: trigger it on a schedule or event, retain timestamped images, compare each image with a baseline or prior capture, and send meaningful differences to a person or system. Browserless’s Make.com guide demonstrates configuring an HTTP request to its screenshot endpoint and identifies visual monitoring as a use case; it does not establish a complete built-in diff-and-alert workflow. Choose a capture route

Route Use it when What it provides
REST /screenshot You want one capture request per scheduled run. POST a URL and screenshot options, authenticate with a token, and save the returned image data. Screenshot API
Puppeteer or Playwright connection The page needs interaction, browser state, navigation control, or a custom browser-side wait. Connect to a Browserless-managed browser, navigate, wait for a page condition, and call the client’s screenshot method. Screenshot examples
Make.com HTTP workflow You want no-code orchestration around a screenshot request. The Browserless guide shows an HTTP request configuration for the endpoint; scheduling, image comparison, and alerting still need to be configured as part of your workflow. Make.com guide

For a simple stateless capture, start with REST. Choose Puppeteer or Playwright when the page must be interacted with or needs browser-side readiness logic. Browserless describes REST APIs as single HTTP requests for common browser tasks, including screenshots. REST APIs overview

Capture a page with the REST screenshot API

The REST endpoint accepts a POST request containing the target URL and optional screenshot configuration. Supply your Browserless API token for authentication. The response is image data, so save the response body as an image rather than expecting a JSON image URL. Check the current endpoint documentation for the exact request format and supported fields for your account and API version. Screenshot API documentation

A recurring job should store each returned image with a timestamp and target identifier. The actual schedule, retention, comparison, and notification logic belongs in the scheduler or workflow you choose; the capture endpoint alone does not perform those monitoring steps.

Set options for repeatable captures

Decide on the capture dimensions and conditions once, then keep them stable between runs. The REST API documents options for full-page capture, image type and quality, clipping, viewport size, device scale factor, and selector-specific capture. It also supports waits for events, functions, selectors, or timeouts, along with navigation options and request or resource rejection controls. Screenshot API options

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Viewport or full page: Choose whether the monitor tracks only the visible viewport or the full document. Do not alternate between the two across runs.
  • Region: Use a clip region or selector-specific capture if changes in one component matter more than changes elsewhere.
  • Image format: Pick a supported output—PNG, JPEG, or WebP—and keep the format and quality consistent to avoid introducing comparison noise.
  • Viewport and scale: Keep viewport dimensions and device scale factor the same. A responsive layout or changed pixel density can alter the image without any site content change.
  • Readiness: Wait for a meaningful selector, event, function, or timeout rather than assuming navigation alone means the page is ready.

Account for lazy-loaded content

Some pages load images or other content only after scrolling. Browserless documents using scrollPage: true together with full-page capture to trigger lazy loading. If a region remains absent, check whether the page requires scrolling or a longer readiness condition before interpreting it as a site change. Screenshot API lazy-loading guidance

Build the monitoring loop

  1. Define the target and scope. Record the URL, viewport, selected region or full-page mode, output format, and any page-ready condition.
  2. Trigger the capture. Use an external scheduler, automation platform, or event trigger to make the REST request—or run a browser-client script when interaction is required.
  3. Store the image. Retain timestamped outputs and identify the target and capture settings alongside them. Choose how long to keep history and which image will serve as the comparison baseline.
  4. Compare captures. Compare the new image against the baseline or previous accepted capture. Decide how your chosen comparison system should treat small rendering differences before generating alerts.
  5. Route meaningful differences. Send changes to a review queue or notification channel. Keep the image and its timestamp available so a reviewer can inspect what changed.
  6. Investigate suspicious results. A blank image, CAPTCHA, access-denied page, or missing lazy-loaded content may indicate a capture problem rather than a real visual change.

These steps describe a monitoring system assembled around Browserless capture; the Browserless screenshot documentation establishes the capture capabilities, not a turnkey scheduling, storage, visual-diff, and notification service.

Use Puppeteer or Playwright when capture needs browser control

Browserless documents connecting both Puppeteer and Playwright clients to a managed browser and then calling their screenshot methods. A browser-client flow is useful when your page needs interactions or a condition that is easier to express in browser code than in a single REST request. Browserless screenshot examples

Keep comparisons useful

  • Fix capture conditions: A changed viewport, clip, scale factor, format, or readiness wait can look like a page change. Treat capture settings as part of the monitor’s configuration.
  • Separate page changes from capture failures: Check for bot challenges and access-denied output before escalating a difference as a design or content change.
  • Set a deliberate baseline: Keep an initial known-good image or an accepted prior capture, and decide how reviewed changes become the new baseline.
  • Plan retries and review: Decide how your scheduler handles transient failures and who reviews a difference before it triggers downstream action.

Browserless documents that automation blocking can yield blank or white images, CAPTCHA challenges, access-denied or 403 pages, or results that differ from a normal browser. These should be diagnosed as possible access or rendering issues, not automatically classified as site changes. Screenshot API troubleshooting notes

Troubleshoot unexpected captures

Symptom Likely cause to check Next step
Blank or white image The target may be blocking automated browsing, or the screenshot may happen before meaningful content is ready. Inspect the returned image, then review the page-ready condition and whether the target serves a challenge or access-denied response to automation. Browserless guidance
CAPTCHA, 403, or access-denied page The site may be blocking automation. Do not treat the challenge screen as a normal visual change. Confirm whether the target permits the capture approach and investigate the access issue.
Images or sections are missing Content may be lazy-loaded or may not have rendered before capture. Use an appropriate wait; for lazy content, test scrolling with scrollPage: true alongside full-page capture.
Frequent differences with no apparent site update Capture conditions may vary, or the page may not have reached the same state each time. Compare viewport, region, format, scale factor, and readiness logic across runs before adjusting the difference threshold.
Capture works once but not on schedule The surrounding trigger, request, or retry behavior may differ from a manual run. Inspect the scheduled request and its returned image or failure state; keep orchestration and retry handling in the scheduler or workflow.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. A single GET request can return an image or PDF. For a quick capture:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options and authentication. Cookie banners are accepted and removed before capture, along with known newsletter popups and chat widgets; those cleanup steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status. An MCP server lets AI agents use screenshot, page-info, and PDF-capture tools. The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.
