Then test one change at a time, check the box model and interaction state, and make any confirmed fix in your project’s actual stylesheet or workspace.
Open DevTools on the element that looks wrong
Right-click the rendered element and choose Inspect, or turn on the element picker and click the element. Selecting the wrong node can make its styles appear unrelated to the visible problem, so check that the highlighted DOM element is the one you intend to diagnose.
In Chrome and Edge, the element-picker shortcut is Command+Shift+C on Mac and Control+Shift+C on Windows or Linux. Browser menus and shortcuts can vary by browser and operating system. Chrome’s CSS inspection guide and Edge’s CSS reference document these workflows.
Find which CSS rule is overriding your style
With the element selected, open Elements > Styles in Chrome or Edge, or the Inspector’s rules view in Firefox. Styles lists declarations that match the selected element. Declarations shown as crossed out have been overridden; they remain useful clues because they show that a rule matched but lost in the cascade.

- Find the intended declaration and note whether it is crossed out.
- Locate the active declaration for the same property. Check its selector, stylesheet, and source location.
- Follow the stylesheet or source link to inspect the rule in context. In Edge, specificity tooltips can help compare competing selectors.
- If the property is not declared directly on the element, check inherited rules and custom properties that may supply its value.
Do not assume that the longest selector is automatically the winner: the cascade also depends on factors such as importance, origin, and source order. DevTools shows the declarations involved; use the active rule and the final computed value together to identify what actually took effect. Chrome and Edge describe inspecting matched CSS and navigating to its source.
Confirm the final value in Computed
Styles helps explain the competition between rules; Computed answers what value the browser resolved for the selected element. In Chrome and Edge, use the Computed panel to focus on applied values; Chrome’s Show All option exposes additional properties, including inherited ones.

In Firefox, the Inspector’s Computed panel displays calculated values. Expand a property to trace it to the rule and source filename or line that set it. This view corresponds to values available through getComputedStyle. Firefox’s Inspector documentation explains computed-value inspection.
If the value is unexpected, trace whether it comes from an inherited declaration or a custom property rather than adding another rule to the element immediately. That distinction can reveal why a change elsewhere affects the result.

Test a CSS change without losing track of the cause
In the Styles panel, edit a declaration’s value or disable it temporarily. Change one plausible cause at a time and watch the page. If the appearance changes as expected, you have evidence that the declaration was involved; if it does not, revert the experiment and test another explanation.
DevTools edits are useful for diagnosis, but an in-browser edit is not automatically a permanent project change. Once confirmed, make the fix in the stylesheet or workspace your project uses, then reload or rebuild as appropriate to verify the actual source change.

Check dimensions, spacing, and interaction state
A correct CSS value can still produce an unexpected result because of layout or state. Use the box-model view to inspect the selected element’s dimensions, padding, border, and margins. Compare the displayed box with the space you expected it to occupy before changing width or spacing rules.
If the problem appears only during interaction, force a relevant pseudo-class such as :hover or :focus in DevTools, where supported. Chrome also provides focus emulation for cases where a menu or overlay vanishes because DevTools itself has taken focus. Inspect the page in the relevant viewport and rendering state; a rule that works in one state may not apply in another. See Chrome’s CSS DevTools guide for box-model and state controls.

Trace minified stylesheets and investigate larger CSS files
Navigate to the declaration’s source
Use the stylesheet or source link beside the matched rule to reach the file and location that supplied it. If the stylesheet is minified, Edge’s reference documents formatting it in the Sources editor to make the code easier to inspect. Do not assume a framework’s original source is available: source maps must be present and loaded for DevTools to map generated CSS back to original files.
Use Coverage as evidence, not as a deletion list
Chrome’s Coverage panel can show which CSS was used during the page session. A rule not observed in that session is not necessarily safe to delete: another route, viewport, interaction, or later-loaded content may use it. Treat Coverage as a prompt for further investigation, not proof that a declaration is permanently unused. Chrome’s documentation covers CSS inspection and Coverage.
A quick diagnostic checklist
- Is the correct DOM element selected?
- Which declaration is active for the property, and where does its source link lead?
- What final value appears in Computed, and is it inherited or supplied by a custom property?
- Does the selected element’s box model match the expected dimensions and spacing?
- Is the page in the relevant pseudo-class, focus state, viewport, or rendering mode?
- Did a live edit confirm the cause, and was the lasting fix made in the project’s source workflow?

The labels and controls differ, but the debugging method is the same: select the element, trace its matched declarations, verify the computed result, and test layout and state before rewriting CSS.
