Use BackstopJS to capture a Next.js page as an approved reference, then capture it again after code changes and review the visual differences. The core loop is init, configure scenarios and viewports, capture references, run tests, inspect the report, and approve only intentional changes. BackstopJS describes its purpose as “automates visual regression testing of your webapp – comparing screenshots over time.” It checks rendered appearance; it does not replace functional or end-to-end assertions.
How the BackstopJS and Next.js workflow fits together
BackstopJS is a separate visual-testing tool, not a dedicated Next.js integration. A scenario tells BackstopJS which URL to capture, and that URL needs to resolve to a running app. In practice, start your Next.js app and point a scenario at a stable local route such as http://localhost:3000/. That setup follows BackstopJS’s documented scenario URL requirement; it is not a framework-specific integration recipe.
The test compares a fresh screenshot with an approved reference image. A difference is a signal for review, not proof by itself that the interface is broken: a deliberate redesign can produce a valid diff, while dynamic content can create noise. Keep functional checks for behavior such as navigation, form submission, and data handling in your other tests.
Install and initialize BackstopJS
For a repository-local command, install BackstopJS as a project dependency. Check the package documentation for the version you intend to use, as a current compatibility matrix for BackstopJS, Node.js, Next.js, browsers, and Docker is not established here.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
npm install --save-dev backstopjs
Initialize the configuration from your project directory:
npx backstop init
BackstopJS also documents global installation, but a project dependency makes the command and tool version part of the repository’s setup. Initialization can overwrite existing files. Inspect the generated files before proceeding, and do not run initialization casually over existing project configuration. See the BackstopJS project README and usage guide and the BackstopJS npm package documentation for version-specific instructions.
Configure a stable scenario and viewport
A scenario needs a label and a URL. The configuration also needs at least one viewport. BackstopJS URLs may be absolute or relative to the working directory; for a Next.js app, an absolute local URL makes the target explicit. The example below illustrates the shape of a scenario and viewport configuration; compare property names and defaults against the documentation for your installed BackstopJS version before using it.

Place the scenario in the configuration file generated by your installed tool version, or adapt the generated file rather than replacing it wholesale. The values here are an example, not a universal viewport prescription. Add viewport sizes that represent layouts your app supports and that matter to its users.
Choose pages and states deliberately
- Start with important, repeatable user-visible pages rather than trying to capture every transient state.
- Prefer routes whose content and layout are stable between runs. Changing timestamps, rotating promotions, personalized content, and asynchronous data can create differences unrelated to a code change.
- Use a separate scenario for each page or distinct state you need to compare, with a label that will be clear in the report.
- For interactive states, decide how the browser should reach that state and whether authentication is needed before selecting an engine or adding setup.
The official documentation establishes scenarios and URLs, but it does not set a universal target for how many scenarios to create. Keep the set useful and maintainable for your app.
Start Next.js, capture references, and run comparisons
Keep the development server running and make sure the scenario URL loads before capturing. Use the BackstopJS commands generated or documented for your installed version; the standard workflow is:

- Start the app: in one terminal, run the development command configured by your Next.js project, commonly
npm run dev. Wait until the server reports it is ready. - Capture the baseline: from the project directory, run
npx backstop reference. This creates reference screenshots for the configured scenarios. - Make a code or style change: keep the route and test state repeatable so a changed screenshot reflects the change you intend to assess.
- Test against the baseline: run
npx backstop testto capture the current page and compare it with the references. - Review the report: inspect each difference in context, including whether it affects the intended layout or is explained by dynamic content or environment variation.
- Approve accepted changes: when a difference is intentional, run
npx backstop approveto update the reference set, following the command behavior documented for your installed version.
Approving changes replaces the baseline used for future comparisons. Treat reference updates as changes to the test oracle: review them deliberately and keep the updated images reviewable in version control.
Choose browser and runtime options for your needs
Puppeteer or Playwright
BackstopJS documents Puppeteer and Playwright options. Choose based on the browser coverage you need, whether the test must perform interactions, and whether it must load an authenticated state. The Playwright options described by the package documentation include Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit, as well as storage state for cookies and local storage. Do not assume different engines produce identical screenshots. Confirm engine-specific configuration fields in documentation matching your installed package version.

BackstopJS notes that environments can render the same page differently, particularly text, and documents a Docker mode intended to reduce that variation. If local and CI screenshots disagree, trying Docker can help standardize the rendering environment. It is a mitigation, not a guarantee that every difference disappears; account for Docker availability and image maintenance in your workflow.

CI reporting
The BackstopJS project lists CI/source-control support and JUnit reporting. Exact pipeline syntax depends on the CI provider and tool version, so use the matching BackstopJS and provider documentation rather than copying an unverified generic pipeline. Keep baseline changes visible in source control so reviewers can distinguish an intentional visual update from incidental test output.
Common problems and fixes
- The capture cannot load the page: confirm the Next.js server is running, the configured host and port are correct, and the route opens in a browser from the capture environment. A scenario URL that does not resolve cannot produce the intended comparison.
- Every run shows unexpected differences: look for changing page content, asynchronous rendering, or environment variation. Stabilize the page state where possible; if local and CI rendering differs, evaluate the documented Docker mode.
- Text differs between local and CI: rendering can vary across environments. Check that the environments and browser engine are consistent, then consider Docker as a way to reduce variation.
- An authenticated page is captured in the wrong state: configure the needed browser state using supported options for your chosen engine. For Playwright, package documentation describes storage state for cookies and local storage.
- A reference update hides a real regression: do not approve a diff merely to make a test pass. Inspect the report, establish that the change is intended, and review the baseline update in version control.
- A documented option does not work: verify it against the documentation for the installed BackstopJS version. Engine-specific fields and provider-specific CI syntax should not be assumed to be interchangeable across versions.
Or skip the browser setup
If you need an on-demand screenshot rather than a version-controlled visual regression baseline, ScreenshotNeo offers a screenshot API and MCP server. A single GET request can return an image or PDF. The following cURL example captures a page; see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for options.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
- Cookie banners and consent prompts are accepted and removed before capture; supported cleanup also removes known newsletter popups and chat widgets, with each step configurable.
- Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed; response headers identify the page verdict and billing status.
- An MCP server provides
take_screenshot,get_page_info, andcapture_pdftools for AI agents and MCP clients. - The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card required; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots.

How to decide whether BackstopJS is the right fit
Use BackstopJS when you want repeatable screenshot comparisons against approved references and can maintain stable routes and states. Select pages and viewports around the layouts you need to protect, choose an engine for required browser and interaction coverage, and use Docker as an option when environmental rendering differences create noise. For broader Next.js testing context, see the Next.js official testing guide; it does not describe a dedicated BackstopJS integration recipe.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does BackstopJS test whether a Next.js page works?
It compares screenshots for visual changes; use separate functional or end-to-end tests for behavior such as navigation and form submission.
Can a BackstopJS scenario use a relative URL?
Yes. BackstopJS documents absolute URLs and URLs relative to the working directory; ensure the target resolves in the capture environment.
