Azure Monitor cannot see a YouTube stream on its own. To alert when an always-on stream stops, build a monitoring path that polls YouTube’s Live Streaming API, sends timestamped status records to Azure Monitor, and uses an alert rule to detect either an unhealthy stream state or missing observations. Then route notifications through an Azure Monitor action group.

Decide what “stops” means for your stream

A YouTube stream has more than one relevant status. Choose the failure you want to detect before configuring Azure alerts: incoming encoder data stopping, a stream configuration problem, the broadcast event ending, or the monitoring system itself going quiet.

Signal What it tells you When to alert
liveStream.status.streamStatus The input state of a YouTube live stream. YouTube documents values including active, created, error, inactive, and ready. active means YouTube is receiving data; inactive means it is not. Use this for an alert when incoming stream data stops or YouTube reports an input error. YouTube LiveStreams documentation.
liveStream.status.healthStatus A separate diagnostic signal, not a synonym for active/inactive. It can report good, ok, bad, or noData, with update time and configuration issues. Issue severity may be info, warning, or error; YouTube says an error-severity issue means the video cannot be broadcast to viewers. Use this for early warnings about setup or stream health, or to include diagnostics with an outage notification. YouTube LiveStreams documentation.
liveBroadcast.status.lifeCycleStatus The lifecycle of the broadcast event, such as whether it is scheduled, live, or ended. It does not by itself establish whether encoder data is arriving. Use it if the event lifecycle—not loss of input—is what should page your team. Verify which broadcast and stream resources are associated in your setup. YouTube LiveBroadcasts documentation.
Monitor heartbeat / observation time Whether your poller is still producing fresh status records and they are reaching Azure Monitor. Alert separately when records go stale; otherwise a stopped poller or broken ingestion path could hide an outage.

The YouTube API describes inactive this way: “The stream is in inactive state which means the user is not receiving data via the stream.” That is an input-state definition, not a guarantee that every viewer sees the same playback condition at the same moment.

Build the monitoring path

The following is a reference architecture assembled from documented YouTube API fields and Azure Monitor capabilities. The official documentation reviewed does not describe a ready-made YouTube-to-Azure connector, so your team must implement and operate the poller, credentials, ingestion, and alert rules.

  1. Poll the right YouTube resource. Use the YouTube Live Streaming API to retrieve the relevant liveStream resource and inspect status.streamStatus and status.healthStatus. If you also care whether the broadcast event has ended, retrieve the corresponding liveBroadcast resource and inspect status.lifeCycleStatus. Follow YouTube’s API documentation for authentication and resource selection.
  2. Record each observation with a timestamp. Include enough context to query and troubleshoot, such as observation time, stream ID, channel or broadcast ID, input status, health status, health update time, and a poller heartbeat. This is a suggested record shape, not a schema required by YouTube or Microsoft.
  3. Prepare Azure ingestion. Create a custom Log Analytics table and a data collection rule (DCR) describing the expected input and destination. Register an application and grant it access to the DCR. The poller can then send JSON records through the Azure Monitor Logs Ingestion API, which accepts application data over REST or client libraries and can route or transform it through the DCR. See Microsoft’s Logs Ingestion API overview.
  4. Send observations to the ingestion endpoint. Have the monitor submit records that match the DCR’s expected structure. Confirm records arrive in the intended table and that timestamp and status fields are queryable before creating an alert.
  5. Create a scheduled-query log alert. Write a Kusto Query Language (KQL) query over the custom table, then configure a log search alert to evaluate it on a schedule. Microsoft describes log alerts as query-based; alert type behavior, evaluation options, and costs vary. See Azure Monitor alert types.
  6. Attach an action group. Select the recipients or automation to run when the rule fires, such as email, an Azure Function, a Logic App, or a webhook. Azure Monitor action groups support these action types; see Create and manage action groups.

Alert on outages and on missing observations

Use distinct conditions so an alert tells you whether YouTube reported a stream problem or your monitoring path stopped reporting. Exact KQL depends on your table and column names; the following is the logic to implement, not a drop-in query for an unspecified schema.

Explicit stream failure

  • Trigger on streamStatus equal to inactive or error if the operational definition of an outage is loss of incoming data or an API-reported input error.
  • Decide how to treat created and ready. They may be normal before a stream starts but unexpected for a channel expected to be continuously live.
  • Optionally include healthStatus and configuration issue severity to send a warning before a hard outage. Keep warning and paging thresholds distinct if they require different responses.

Stale or absent telemetry

  • Query for the latest observation timestamp per monitored stream and alert when it is older than a chosen freshness threshold.
  • Choose that threshold using your poll cadence, ingestion delay, alert evaluation frequency, and acceptable time to notice an outage. No universal safe interval or end-to-end detection-time guarantee is established by the cited documentation.
  • Test both a stopped poller and a failed ingestion path. Either can cause stale data even if YouTube is still receiving the stream.

Metric heartbeat alternative

If the monitor publishes a custom metric heartbeat and the main concern is the absence of new data, a metric alert may suit that signal better. Microsoft cautions that log alerts can be more latent for absence detection. A custom metric path and a Log Analytics record path have different implementation and cost characteristics; check current Azure pricing for your region, expected time series, and chosen log-query evaluation interval. More frequent log alert evaluation costs more. The appropriate choice depends on your required response time and the operational complexity you can support.

Route and secure notifications

Action groups can notify people or invoke automation, but the destination must handle the payload and be available. For webhook integrations, check the receiving endpoint’s expected schema and authentication method. Azure Monitor’s common alert schema provides standardized alert essentials, context, and custom properties across supported alert types; enable it when a stable shared payload is useful. See Microsoft’s common alert schema documentation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a secure webhook, Microsoft documents Microsoft Entra ID authentication and says basic authentication is not supported. If the target needs a different payload schema, Microsoft recommends considering a Logic App. Webhook calls may be retried after failures, but delivery is not infallible: Microsoft documents retry intervals of 5, 20, 5, 40, and 5 seconds, followed by a 15-minute period in which the action group does not call the endpoint after retries fail. Make the receiver resilient and monitor the notification path itself. See action group documentation.

Validate detection before relying on it

  • Confirm the poller reads the intended stream and, where applicable, the matching broadcast.
  • Verify normal active and healthy observations reach the custom table with correct timestamps.
  • Test the alert query against representative active, inactive, error, and stale-record cases.
  • Simulate a poller failure and an ingestion failure separately; verify each produces a stale-telemetry alert rather than silently masking the stream condition.
  • Trigger a controlled test notification and confirm the recipient or automation can parse the payload and recover when the alert resolves.
  • Measure your own end-to-end timing across polling, ingestion, rule evaluation, and action delivery. Azure’s component documentation does not promise a specific stop-detection time for a particular channel.
