In Selenium, an atomic test is an independent test with its own preconditions, a short browser interaction, and a check for one coherent outcome. It should not depend on another test running first or leaving behind data. “Atomic” does not mean exactly one assertion: Selenium’s guidance emphasizes independence, isolation, and focused purpose, not a fixed assertion count.

What makes a Selenium test atomic?

Selenium recommends writing each test as its own unit, without relying on other tests to complete. In practical terms, a test should be able to run by itself, in any order, and still establish the behavior it was written to verify. See Selenium’s test-independency guidance and test-dependency guidance.

Keep the test’s browser actions short and related to a single purpose. A checkout journey that creates an account, configures a product, adds it to a cart, pays, and submits feedback combines several behaviors. Separate tests can verify each behavior while arranging the needed starting state directly. Selenium’s test-practices overview recommends concise setup, action, and evaluation cycles, while noting that its recommendations need to fit the project.

Do not apply a one-assertion rule mechanically. Several checks can be appropriate when together they establish one outcome—for example, that a saved profile shows the changed display name and retains the expected account status.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Structure each test around its own behavior

  1. Arrange: create or select the data needed for this specific behavior. Use a fixture or an application API for setup where practical, instead of navigating through unrelated browser flows.
  2. Act: perform the small set of user-visible browser actions that exercise the behavior.
  3. Assert: use your test framework to check the outcome that answers the test’s purpose.
  4. Clean up: remove test data when needed and end the browser session, including when the test fails.

The framework determines the exact fixture, hook, and assertion syntax. Selenium’s guidance includes a pytest fixture pattern that yields a driver for a test and quits it during teardown. The important design goal is that setup and cleanup belong to the test’s lifecycle, rather than being hidden in another test.

Make tests independent of order and shared state

A test that checks a published content module should not depend on a separate test having created and published that content. Selenium gives this kind of dependency as a reason tests can become unreliable: synchronization may take time, and the prerequisite test may not run or may fail. Instead, make the module test control its own input, such as using a stub, and leave content creation to its own test. See Selenium’s example of test independence.

  • Use distinct records or identifiers so simultaneous tests do not overwrite or select each other’s data.
  • Clean up stale records that could be picked up by a later run.
  • Create a new WebDriver instance for each test rather than carrying browser state across test cases.
  • Make every test establish its prerequisites; do not rely on a previous test’s success or execution order.

Selenium recommends a separate driver per test to improve isolation and make parallelization simpler. Independent test functions alone do not prevent infrastructure or data collisions, however: the application and test-data strategy must also tolerate concurrent work. Selenium Grid can distribute tests across machines and platform combinations, but it does not remove the need to isolate state.

Use Selenium only where browser behavior matters

Functional browser tests can be expensive to run. If a behavior can be verified reliably with a lighter-weight test, consider that first; reserve Selenium for behavior where the browser itself matters. When possible, prepare data through an API or database operation before launching the browser, then keep the browser test focused on the user-facing behavior under test. Selenium discusses this trade-off in its test-practices guidance.

This is not a rule to avoid browser tests. It is a way to avoid using a browser journey merely to create prerequisites for a different behavior. The right boundary depends on what the test needs to prove and what setup mechanisms the application provides.

Keep browser control separate from test execution

WebDriver controls a browser through a browser-specific driver. It does not compare expected and actual values, decide whether a test passed, or produce test reports. Those responsibilities belong to a testing framework such as JUnit or NUnit, as explained in Selenium’s component overview.

Selenium’s product overview distinguishes WebDriver, the browser-control API, from Selenium IDE, a recording and playback extension, and Selenium Grid, which distributes tests. Whichever pieces you use, test independence remains a suite-design responsibility.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

  • Chaining tests: A later test assumes an earlier one created data. Give the later test its own controlled prerequisite or test double.
  • Sharing records: Concurrent tests modify the same account or object. Use distinct test data and clean stale records.
  • Testing an entire business journey in one case: A failure can obscure which behavior broke, and the browser flow includes unrelated work. Split it into tests with distinct purposes.
  • Using the browser for all setup: Unrelated navigation adds time and failure points. Set up state through a fixture, API, or database operation when suitable.
  • Treating WebDriver as the test runner: Put assertions and reporting in the test framework; use WebDriver for browser interaction.
  • Enforcing exactly one assertion: Selenium does not prescribe an assertion count. Keep checks together when they establish the same coherent outcome.

For the browser-control portion of a test, Selenium remains the appropriate tool when the behavior requires an actual browser. If the test instead needs a website screenshot as an artifact, a screenshot API is a separate option rather than a replacement for Selenium’s test runner or assertions.

For a standalone website screenshot rather than a Selenium test, ScreenshotNeo offers a one-request API. For example, this cURL call saves a WebP screenshot; see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
  • Cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed before the shot; each cleanup step can be turned off.
