In JUnit Jupiter, statically import assertTrue from org.junit.jupiter.api.Assertions, then pass it a boolean condition. Put an optional failure message after the condition. JUnit 4 uses a different import and puts the message first, so check which framework your test uses before copying an example.
Use assertTrue in JUnit Jupiter
For JUnit Jupiter, add this static import:
import static org.junit.jupiter.api.Assertions.assertTrue;Then call the assertion from a test method. This example is complete as a test class:

}assertTrue passes when its condition is true. If the condition is false, the assertion fails and JUnit reports an AssertionError.
Assert an expression directly
The argument can be any expression that evaluates to a boolean, including a comparison:

assertTrue(actualCount > 0);Use the method when the behavior under test is naturally a true-or-false condition, such as a predicate or range check. If the test is fundamentally comparing an expected value with an actual value, a more specific equality assertion may make the intent clearer.
Add a failure message in the right position
In Jupiter, put the message after the condition:
assertTrue(valid, "expected validation to pass");The message helps explain a failure. For a diagnostic that takes work to construct, pass a supplier so JUnit can defer creating the message unless it is needed:

assertTrue(valid, () -> "result details: " + buildDiagnostic());This form is useful when building the diagnostic is costly. Jupiter also provides overloads that accept a BooleanSupplier condition; check the API version configured in your project if you need that form.
Check whether the project uses JUnit 4 or Jupiter
The framework determines both the import and the order of arguments. Do not mix these forms:

If a copied call fails to compile, inspect the import at the top of the test and the JUnit dependency configured by the project. The method name is the same, but the message argument order differs between these APIs.
Troubleshoot common assertTrue problems
- “Cannot find symbol” for
assertTrue: Add the static import for the JUnit API your project uses. If JUnit is not available to the test source set, check the project’s configured test dependency. - The message is being treated as the condition, or the call does not compile: Check whether the import is from JUnit 4 or Jupiter, then put the message before the condition for JUnit 4 or after it for Jupiter.
- The test fails even though the assertion compiles: Evaluate the boolean expression and verify the test setup and expected state. A false condition is the failure that
assertTrueis designed to report. - A diagnostic is expensive to build: In Jupiter, use the
Supplier<String>message overload so message construction can be deferred until needed. - The assertion expresses an expected-versus-actual comparison: Consider an equality assertion instead, which can communicate the comparison more directly.
