Use an assertion to check an internal condition your code expects to be true. In Python, write assert condition or assert condition, message; in Java, write assert condition; or assert condition : detailMessage;. A failed assertion raises an assertion error only when that language’s assertion mechanism is active. Assertions are for catching broken assumptions—not for validating ordinary user input or handling routine failures.
What an assertion does
An assertion turns a programmer’s assumption into an executable check at a particular point in a program. If the condition is false, the assertion reports that the assumption did not hold, helping expose an invalid internal state near where it arose. Python’s guidance describes uses such as checking a data-structure invariant or confirming a function result (Python Wiki: Using Assertions Effectively).
An assertion complements tests; it does not replace unit or system tests. Assertions check assumptions during execution, while tests exercise behavior under selected inputs and scenarios.
How to write an assertion
Python
Use assert condition for a direct check, or include a short message when it adds useful context:

If the condition is false, Python raises AssertionError. The language reference documents both forms and the optional message (Python language reference: The assert statement).

Use the example only if an empty list means the program has violated an internal assumption. If an empty list is a valid input or expected situation, handle that case explicitly instead.
Java
Java’s corresponding forms are assert condition; and assert condition : detailMessage;. A false condition throws AssertionError when assertions are enabled. Oracle’s Java documentation covers the syntax, diagnostics, and enablement (Oracle Java: Programming With Assertions, Java SE 8).

When to use assertions—and when not to
Good uses: internal invariants and impossible states
- Check a data-structure invariant that should remain true as your code runs.
- Confirm that a result satisfies a condition guaranteed by the program’s own logic.
- Mark an internal state that should be impossible to reach if the code is working as intended.
Keep the expression straightforward. Add a diagnostic message when it gives information that is not already clear from the condition or the surrounding failure report.
Do not use them for expected failures or required work
Do not use assertions to validate user input, report a missing file, or handle an environmental problem. Those conditions can occur during normal operation and need explicit error handling or an appropriate user-facing response; an assertion is an internal self-check, not an API validation mechanism.

Never put work the program must perform inside an assertion. Python removes assert statements when run with optimization, and Java assertions are disabled by default, so the condition—and any side effect inside it—may not run. Python documents optimization with -O in its command-line documentation; Oracle advises against using Java assertions for public method argument checks and explains that assertion expressions may not be evaluated when assertions are disabled (Oracle Java: Programming With Assertions, Java SE 8).

These behaviors are language- and framework-specific: Python’s optimization behavior should not be assumed for every language, and Java’s default-disabled assertions are not a universal rule.

Assertions in Python tests
pytest
In pytest test modules, ordinary Python statements such as assert actual == expected are rewritten to show useful detail about values when a check fails. For an expected exception, use pytest.raises() rather than trying to assert that the exception occurred (pytest documentation).
unittest
In a Python unittest.TestCase, use its assertion methods—such as self.assertEqual(a, b) and self.assertTrue(x)—to report test failures. Use assertRaises when the test expects an exception (Python unittest documentation).
