Use Playwright to put your site into Hindi and English, capture each state with a stable, language-specific name, and let Argos CI compare each capture with its own accepted baseline. The key is not to compare Hindi pixels directly with English pixels: each language needs a separate visual reference. Argos’s Playwright integration provides the capture-and-upload workflow, but your application or test must handle the language switch or localized route.

How the Hindi–English comparison works

Argos’s Playwright integration uses the @argos-ci/playwright package, an Argos reporter in Playwright configuration, and argosScreenshot to capture and upload screenshots. The test is responsible for rendering the page in the intended language before capture. Use your site’s locale switch, localized URL, or application-specific setup; the Argos quickstart does not provide a ready-made Hindi/English fixture. See the Argos Playwright Quickstart.

Give the two states distinct, stable screenshot names such as homepage-hi and homepage-en. Argos matches screenshots to baselines by name, so stable names let it track each language independently. Hindi and English text can differ in both glyphs and length; a meaningful review asks whether Hindi changed from the accepted Hindi reference and English from the accepted English reference, not whether the two languages look alike. Argos documents locale variants receiving separate baselines for Storybook modes in its visual testing overview; for Playwright, distinct names are the practical way to identify the variants.

  2. Configure the Argos reporter in playwright.config.ts as shown in the official quickstart. Supply the Argos project token through ARGOS_TOKEN or the reporter’s supported token option. The documented example uses GitHub Actions; other CI providers can also pass the token.

  3. Ensure the CI job runs the Playwright suite with the token available to the process. Keep secrets out of source control and use your CI provider’s secret store.

  4. Run the workflow on the default branch first. Argos needs that run to establish the baseline; the quickstart notes that pull-request builds are marked orphan until a baseline exists.

Write a test that captures both language states

The essential flow is to navigate or switch to a locale, wait until the localized page is ready, and then call argosScreenshot with a consistent name. The following illustrates the application-specific parts; replace the URLs and readiness condition with those your site actually uses. It assumes the project has installed and configured the Argos Playwright integration according to its quickstart.

import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
import { argosScreenshot } from '@argos-ci/playwright';

test('homepage renders in Hindi and English', async ({ page }) => {
  await page.goto('https://example.com/hi');
  await expect(page.locator('html')).toHaveAttribute('lang', 'hi');
  await expect(page.locator('main')).toBeVisible();
  await argosScreenshot(page, 'homepage-hi');

  await page.goto('https://example.com/en');
  await expect(page.locator('html')).toHaveAttribute('lang', 'en');
  await expect(page.locator('main')).toBeVisible();
  await argosScreenshot(page, 'homepage-en');
});

This example assumes routes at /hi and /en, and that the page sets the HTML lang attribute correctly. If your app uses a language menu, call it instead; if it stores locale in application state or a cookie, initialize that state as your app requires. The assertions are examples of checks to adapt, not a required Argos fixture. Wait for the page’s meaningful localized content or other stable readiness signal before capturing; a visible main element alone may not guarantee translations or client-rendered content have finished loading.

Keep names and test identity useful

Use the same names for the same page and locale on every run. If you cover several pages, use a clear naming pattern such as checkout-hi and checkout-en. Include locale in test titles, tags, or other available context so reviewers can identify the variant represented by a diff. Avoid dynamically generated names that change between runs, since the baseline match depends on the screenshot name.

Establish and review the baselines

First run on the default branch

Run the configured suite on the default branch to create the initial references for both screenshot names. Confirm that the captures show the intended translations before treating them as baselines. If the first run is on a pull request, Argos may mark it orphan because there is no default-branch baseline to compare against.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Review pull-request changes by locale

On later pull-request builds, use the Argos check to inspect the visual changes and approve or reject them through the review workflow. Check the Hindi capture against the accepted Hindi reference and the English capture against the accepted English reference. Approve an updated baseline only after determining that the change is intended; a legitimate translation update and an accidental layout regression can both produce diffs.

Argos’s fallback baselines documentation describes an option for bootstrapping a new localization from a default locale. That can help when adding coverage for a language, but it does not mean the translations should be visually equivalent or remove the need to review the localized result.

Make screenshot rendering reproducible

Visual diffs can come from the environment as well as from your code. Playwright warns that rendered output may vary with the host operating system, browser version, browser settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. Keep the baseline and comparison jobs on the same operating system and browser version, with the same relevant settings and execution mode. See Playwright’s visual comparison guidance.

The Argos quickstart’s reporter example also shows disabling LCD text and font hinting to reduce text-rendering variation across local and CI environments. Apply such settings consistently rather than changing them only for one side of a comparison.

Attach context that helps explain a diff

Argos SDKs generate screenshot metadata. The documented metadata fields can include URL, viewport, browser, automation library, SDK, and test title. Ensure the test title or other useful context distinguishes the locale so a reviewer can identify whether a change belongs to Hindi or English. Details are in the Argos screenshot metadata reference.

Argos CI or Playwright’s built-in screenshot assertions?

Playwright’s toHaveScreenshot() can save reference screenshots on a first run and compare later runs against those references. Its documentation emphasizes consistent rendering conditions for reliable results. Argos is a fit when you want screenshots uploaded for a hosted CI review workflow and an Argos pull-request check; native Playwright snapshots are a reasonable option if your team prefers managing and updating references alongside the test suite.

Troubleshooting common comparison problems

  • Pull-request captures are marked orphan. Run the screenshot workflow on the default branch first so Argos can establish baselines.

  • Hindi and English appear to be compared as one capture. Check that each call uses a distinct, stable name, such as homepage-hi and homepage-en.

  • The screenshot shows the wrong language. Verify that the test uses the correct localized route or application locale mechanism, and assert an app-specific signal such as the HTML language attribute or translated heading before capture.

  • A diff appears even though the page code did not change. Compare operating system, browser version, browser settings, hardware or runner consistency, and headless mode between runs; also keep any font-rendering settings consistent.

  • The capture happens before translated content is ready. Wait for a meaningful localized selector or application-ready condition rather than relying only on navigation completion.

  • A reviewer cannot tell which locale changed. Add locale to screenshot names and test titles, and use available metadata such as URL and viewport to provide context.

Or skip the browser setup

If your goal is a clean page image rather than a CI visual baseline workflow, ScreenshotNeo can return a screenshot or PDF with one API request. For repeatable Hindi and English captures, pass each localized URL separately and save each response under a language-specific filename. This does not replace Argos’s baseline review workflow.

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. Example cURL request:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com/hi -o homepage-hi.webp

Run the same request with your English URL and a distinct output name, such as homepage-en.webp. ScreenshotNeo removes cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; those steps can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses indicate the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots.
