Applitools Eyes adds visual checks to browser tests you already run: drive the site to a meaningful state, capture a checkpoint, then compare it with a saved baseline and review any differences. Choose the Eyes SDK for your current test framework, configure its API key, and accept a new baseline only after confirming the change is intentional.

What Applitools Eyes does in a visual test

Eyes integrates with automated UI tests. Your test still navigates and interacts with the application; at selected checkpoints, the SDK captures the screen and sends it to Eyes Server for comparison with a stored baseline. You review the result in Eyes Test Manager. A difference may be an intended redesign or a regression, so the comparison flags a change—it does not decide whether the change is correct. Applitools describes visual testing as regression testing for unexpected screen changes.

Choose an Eyes SDK that fits your test stack

Start with the language and browser automation framework already used by your team. Applitools lists integrations for Playwright, Selenium, Cypress, WebdriverIO, TestCafe, Puppeteer, and other web-testing options. The setup and API differ by integration, so use the official guide for the specific SDK rather than mixing examples from different frameworks. See Applitools’ integration selector.

  • Page-level checks: use the integration that runs alongside your existing browser tests; the Playwright guide demonstrates page and element checkpoints.
  • Component checks in Storybook: use the Storybook integration and its guided setup rather than treating it as a substitute for a full-page browser flow. Storybook quick start
  • Browser and device coverage: confirm the available targets and execution setup for your account and service configuration in the current documentation.

Add visual checks to Playwright

The Playwright integration uses an Eyes-provided test fixture. Install and configure the current SDK version using the official Playwright guide, then add a checkpoint after the page has reached the state you want to protect:

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
import { test } from '@applitools/eyes-playwright/fixture';

test('visual check', async ({ page, eyes }) => {
  await page.goto('https://example.com');
  await eyes.check('Home page');
});

This is the core shape of a check, not a complete project configuration: SDK version, runner setup, and credentials must match the current guide. Store the API key as an environment variable rather than committing it to source control. In Playwright projects, ensure the test performs any required sign-in, navigation, or interaction before calling eyes.check; a checkpoint taken in the wrong state creates an unhelpful reference.

Target a region instead of the full page

When a test is concerned with a specific area, the Playwright integration supports checking a locator such as a navigation bar as a region. It also documents full-page capture and region controls. Use a narrow checkpoint when unrelated page content changes frequently; use a full-page checkpoint when page-wide layout is what the test needs to protect. Consult the integration documentation for the current locator and match-level options.

Set up credentials and run a first baseline

Keep prerequisites specific to the SDK you selected. For example, the Applitools Selenium Java quick start calls for an Applitools account and API key, JDK 8 or newer, Maven, current Chrome, and a ChromeDriver with a matching major version. Those are requirements for that example, not universal Eyes requirements. The Storybook quick start instead describes installing @applitools/eyes-storybook, running npx eyes-setup, and configuring the API key through APPLITOOLS_API_KEY. Follow the setup guide for your own framework. Selenium Java quick start · Storybook quick start

  1. Create or access an Applitools account and obtain the API key required by the chosen SDK.
  2. Set the key in your local or CI environment as APPLITOOLS_API_KEY if that integration’s guide specifies it. Do not place a secret directly in a checked-in test file.
  3. Install the SDK and any framework-specific prerequisites using the official instructions.
  4. Run the test against a stable page state. On a first run with no existing baseline, the Selenium quick start shows the result as “New” and stores the captured image as the baseline.
  5. Run the same test again to compare its checkpoint with the saved reference.

How baselines and visual diffs work

A baseline is the expected visual result against which later checkpoints are compared. The first run can establish that reference; subsequent runs report differences. A baseline therefore has lasting impact: if you approve an accidental defect as the new expected image, later runs can treat that defective appearance as normal. Applitools’ overview describes the workflow as running the UI, saving snapshots at key checkpoints, comparing them with earlier baselines, and reviewing the differences. Review each meaningful difference before updating

  • Inspect the changed area and decide whether it reflects an intentional product change, test-data variation, or a defect.
  • Accept a change as the new baseline only when the visual update is expected and reviewed.
  • Reject a regression and report it through your team’s defect workflow.
  • Avoid blanket acceptance: the baseline defines what future runs will consider expected.

Handle dynamic content without hiding real regressions

Data-driven pages can differ between runs even when their layout is healthy. Eyes provides match strategies and region controls to tailor comparisons. The Selenium quick start describes Strict as the default, Ignore Colors as disregarding color changes, and Layout as focusing on overall structure and relative positioning. The Playwright integration also documents ignored and floating regions. Selenium Java quick start · Playwright integration

  • Strict: use when pixel-level appearance, including color, matters.
  • Ignore Colors: consider when color variation is expected but other visual differences remain meaningful.
  • Layout: consider when structure and relative positioning matter more than color or pixel-level styling.
  • Ignored regions: reserve for areas whose content should not participate in the comparison, such as known volatile data.
  • Floating regions: use for elements expected to move while retaining an appearance that should still be checked.

These controls reduce noise, but overly broad ignored areas or a permissive match strategy can conceal genuine UI defects. Limit each exception to the smallest area and behavior justified by the test.

Choose browser, device, and service coverage

Decide coverage based on the interface risk the test is meant to catch: a single desktop layout, several browser targets, or responsive/device-specific states. The Selenium Java guide demonstrates configuring browser and device targets, but available targets depend on account and service configuration. Check the current target list with Applitools documentation or your Applitools administrator before building a matrix around a particular browser or device.

Applitools documents cloud, dedicated-cloud, and on-premises service configurations. If network boundaries, data handling, or deployment location constrain your tests, verify which configuration is supported for your organization with current documentation and your administrator. Troubleshoot common visual-testing problems

  • The test cannot authenticate with Eyes: check that the API key is present in the environment used by the test runner and that the variable name and SDK setup match the integration guide.
  • The first result is “New”: this is expected when no baseline exists for that checkpoint. Review the capture and establish it only if it represents the correct UI state.
  • Every run shows differences in data-heavy areas: stabilize test data where practical, or configure a narrowly scoped ignored or floating region or a suitable match level.
  • A visual check captures the wrong screen: ensure navigation, loading, login, and interactions have completed before the checkpoint. Use the framework’s normal wait strategy so capture occurs at the intended state.
  • A browser or device target is unavailable: verify the target list for your account and service configuration rather than assuming every configuration exposes the same matrix.
  • Setup instructions do not match your project: confirm that you are following the guide for the installed SDK, language, framework, and runner; prerequisites in one quick start do not apply to every integration.

Pricing and plan details

Applitools’ pricing information retrieved in October 2026 listed Starter at $667 per month when paid annually, with 100,000 component checkpoints or 1,000 page checkpoints and included capabilities. Treat that as a dated pricing snapshot, not a quote: plan price, limits, and included features can change. Confirm current terms on the Applitools pricing page before budgeting.

If you need an image or PDF capture endpoint rather than visual regression baselines inside an existing test suite, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. A single request can capture a URL:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. Before capture it can accept cookie/consent banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, with response headers indicating the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents and MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 shots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Sign up free for 1,000 screenshots a month with no card.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Applitools Eyes replace my browser automation tests?

No. Eyes adds visual assertions at checkpoints; your automation still needs to navigate and establish the application state being checked.
