How the ApiFlash visual regression workflow works
Visual regression testing checks whether a page looks different from an approved version. ApiFlash supplies the capture step: request a screenshot after a change, then compare it with a baseline using a separate image-diff or screenshot-testing tool. Android’s screenshot-testing guidance describes this general baseline-or-“golden” comparison model; it is not evidence of an ApiFlash integration. Android Developers screenshot testing guidance
- Choose pages and states. List the URLs to test and the page conditions that matter, such as a logged-in view or a particular responsive layout. Treat desktop and mobile layouts as separate cases when they differ, and record viewport dimensions for each.
- Create approved baselines. Capture the pages under the conditions you intend to use in future runs. Store the images in your team’s artifact store or version control. ApiFlash documents image responses and guides for downloads and storage-related integrations, but the baseline repository is your team’s choice. ApiFlash guides
- Capture after a change. Call ApiFlash again with the same URL and capture parameters. Keep the timing, viewport, format, scale, and page state consistent.
- Compare images outside ApiFlash. Pass the new image and baseline to your chosen diff or screenshot-testing step. Review differences and decide whether they represent a regression or an intentional change.
- Set your team’s review policy. Specify which cases run, which differences require human review, and who can approve a new baseline. The cited sources do not establish a universal pixel-difference threshold or an ApiFlash default threshold.
Capture settings that make comparisons repeatable
The documented endpoint is https://api.apiflash.com/v1/urltoimage. ApiFlash accepts GET or POST requests, requires a valid access key, and requires a target URL beginning with http:// or https://. By default, the response is the image; set response_type=json to receive JSON containing links to the screenshot. Documented output formats are JPEG, PNG, and WebP. The documented defaults are a 1920 × 1080 viewport, JPEG output, and a cache TTL of 86,400 seconds. ApiFlash documentation
- Viewport: Set width and height explicitly for each test case. A layout captured at one viewport is not a substitute for a materially different mobile or desktop layout.
- Capture scope: Use full-page capture when the whole document matters. Use element capture by CSS selector when the test is specifically about a component.
- Scale and format: Keep the scale factor (documented as 1 or 2) and output format fixed between baseline and later captures. Changing either can alter pixels without a page regression.
- Rendering readiness: Prefer
wait_fororwait_untilwhen suitable. ApiFlash’s documentation says these options provide more reliable readiness than a fixed delay. A delay can be useful for known timed behavior, but it does not guarantee that a page is actually ready. - Dynamic or lazy content: Keep the relevant page state stable. ApiFlash documents scrolling to trigger lazy-loaded content or animations; use that behavior consistently if those elements belong in the test.
- Cache behavior: The
freshoption requests a fresh capture, but the FAQ cautions that it does not invalidate an existing cached screenshot. Account for the documented cache TTL when interpreting repeated results. ApiFlash FAQ
Automating capture with the ApiFlash API
This Python example requests a PNG screenshot and writes the returned image bytes to disk. Replace the placeholder key and URL, and set the viewport and readiness parameters to the values supported by your test case and current ApiFlash documentation.

Control environment differences and noise
ApiFlash’s FAQ says its screenshots are captured using Chrome on Linux and that its system fonts differ from Windows and macOS. If your baseline comes from a local machine, font substitution or rendering differences can appear as changes unrelated to your application. Prefer generating both baselines and later captures through the same capture environment, and investigate font or browser differences before treating every pixel variation as a regression. ApiFlash FAQ
- Use the same URL, viewport, scale, format, capture timing, and page state in every run.
- Avoid pages whose visible content changes between runs unless that change is part of the test. Stabilize data, animation, or time-dependent content where your application permits it.
- When an image changes unexpectedly, inspect the raw current and baseline files alongside the diff; a diff image alone may obscure whether the cause is content, layout, font rendering, or capture timing.
- Do not assume a single pixel threshold is appropriate for every page. Choose and document a policy for your own comparator and review process.
Rate limits, quotas, and failure handling
ApiFlash’s current documentation describes a leaky-bucket limit of 20 requests per second with a burst size of 400. Requests above the regular rate are delayed; requests beyond the burst can be terminated with HTTP 429. Successful responses expose quota headers for the limit, remaining calls, and reset time. These operational values can change, so check the current documentation when configuring automation. ApiFlash documentation

| Response | Documented meaning | What to do in a test run |
|---|---|---|
| 400 | Invalid parameters or an uncapturable target | Check the URL scheme, parameter values, and whether the target can be captured. |
| 401 | Invalid or revoked access key | Verify the secret in the server-side environment and replace it if revoked. |
| 402 | Quota exhausted | Inspect quota usage and plan allowance before retrying or scheduling more captures. |
| 403 | Unsupported plan feature | Check whether the requested option is available on the account’s plan. |
| 429 | Rate or burst limit exceeded | Reduce concurrency and pace requests; do not immediately retry all failed jobs at once. |
| 500 | Capture failure | Record the URL and parameters, then retry according to a bounded retry policy. |
The FAQ says cached screenshots and failed screenshots do not count toward the monthly quota. Still, record the response code and quota headers in your automation so a missing capture is not mistaken for a successful comparison. ApiFlash FAQ

Cost and plan context
When checked on 2026-10-03, ApiFlash’s homepage listed the following monthly plans. Pricing and included screenshot quotas are volatile; confirm the live pricing page before budgeting or publishing automation assumptions. ApiFlash pricing
| Plan shown on 2026-10-03 | Price shown | Monthly screenshots shown |
|---|---|---|
| Free | Free | 100 |
| Lite | $7/month | 1,000 |
| Medium | $35/month | 10,000 |
| Large | $180/month | 100,000 |
For a visual test suite, estimate capture volume from the number of URLs, viewport cases, and runs, then account for retries and any baseline-generation work. The FAQ states that cached screenshots and failed screenshots do not count toward the monthly quota; do not assume other capture outcomes have the same billing treatment unless the current terms say so. Or skip the browser setup
If you want the capture step handled by an API rather than setting up a browser yourself, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. It accepts cookie-consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Only clean shots are billed: bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents. Free includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.
For example, save an image response with one GET request:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request details. This capture is separate from your baseline-diff step; keep comparison and approval in the workflow you choose. Sign up free for 1,000 screenshots a month with no card.
Frequently asked questions
Can ApiFlash automatically fail a deployment when a screenshot changes?
The cited ApiFlash documentation describes capture and API behavior, not a built-in deployment gate. To block a release based on visual changes, connect the returned images to a separate comparison and CI policy.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Can I use ApiFlash for authenticated pages?
ApiFlash’s guides describe authenticated captures using methods such as headers or cookies. Follow the current guide for your authentication method and avoid exposing access credentials in client-side code.
Does a fresh capture guarantee that the cached image is cleared?
No. ApiFlash’s FAQ says the fresh option requests a fresh capture but does not invalidate an existing cached screenshot.
