Android’s built-in Focus mode can pause selected distracting apps and withhold their notifications during a work or study session—without requiring a separate focus app. Find it in Digital Wellbeing on supported devices, choose the apps to pause, then turn it on or set a schedule. Its availability and menu labels can vary by phone, and it is designed as a practical pause rather than an unbreakable lock.
What Android Focus mode does
Focus mode temporarily pauses the apps you select. While it is active, you cannot use those apps and they do not send notifications. You can start a session immediately or schedule recurring times, and some phones let you switch it on from Quick Settings. Google’s Digital Wellbeing instructions note that steps may vary by device.
Google introduced Focus mode as a Digital Wellbeing tool in 2019, describing it as a way to pause distracting apps temporarily. The feature is intended to reduce interruptions; the available sources do not establish that it improves concentration, productivity, or screen time for every user.
How to turn on Focus mode
- Open Settings → Digital Wellbeing → Focus mode. This is the typical path; names and availability can differ across Android phones.
- Select the apps you want paused during your focus period.
- Tap Turn on now to start immediately, or choose Set a schedule to configure recurring start and end times.
- To allow temporary access to a paused app, tap Take a break and choose a time limit.
If you cannot find the menu, search Settings for “Digital Wellbeing” or “Focus mode.” Some devices also offer Focus mode as a Quick Settings tile. Google’s Android productivity overview notes that feature availability can vary by language; neither the menu path nor every control should be assumed to appear identically on all devices.

Focus mode is different from an App timer
Choose Focus mode when you want a temporary block during a particular session. Choose an App timer when you want a daily usage allowance for an individual app.

These controls are adjustable, not impossible to override: Focus mode offers a break, and an App timer can be removed. If you need a strict barrier that you cannot easily dismiss yourself, do not assume either setting provides one.

What to consider before relying on it
- Check your device: Digital Wellbeing features and settings can vary by phone, and availability can vary by language. If Focus mode is missing, your device may not expose the same controls.
- Choose the apps deliberately: Only the apps you select are paused. Consider which apps you need for work, study, or essential messages before starting a scheduled block.
- Decide whether a break is useful: Take a break makes the setting flexible, but it also means Focus mode is not a tamper-proof blocker.
- Separate interruption control from a usage target: A scheduled session and a daily allowance solve different problems. Use the control that matches the behavior you want to change.
Google Play’s Digital Wellbeing listing was updated September 7, 2026, but a listing update is not evidence that Focus mode is available on every Android device or that it produces a particular outcome: Digital Wellbeing on Google Play.
