Yes—an old laptop can run a Hindi ASMR livestream, but its age alone cannot tell you whether it can encode reliably for 24 hours a day. Check the laptop’s operating system and hardware, start with a simple low-load OBS scene, match the stream settings to both the encoder and your upload connection, and test before going public. For a continuous channel, also plan for monitoring and recovery: a laptop-based stream can stop if the computer overheats, loses power or internet, or the encoder fails.
Can an old laptop handle a 24/7 YouTube stream?
Possibly. OBS’s minimum system requirements are compatibility thresholds, not a promise that a particular machine can stream the resolution, frame rate, and scene you want. The processor, graphics hardware, encoder, cooling condition, and sustained upload speed all matter. OBS cautions that meeting its basic requirements does not guarantee streaming or recording capability. Check OBS system requirements and assess the actual laptop before relying on it.
Check the machine before installing anything
- Find the exact laptop model, operating system, CPU, graphics hardware, and available storage.
- Inspect the fan vents and cooling system for dust or blockage, and confirm that the power adapter and battery behave reliably.
- Connect by wired Ethernet if available; otherwise test the Wi-Fi connection where the laptop will run.
- Run a sustained test with the intended scene and settings. A laptop that works briefly may still overheat or become unstable over a longer run.
OBS lists Windows 10 or 11 and a DirectX 10.1-compatible GPU for Windows; macOS 11 or later, an Intel or Apple Silicon CPU, and an OpenGL 3.3-compatible GPU for macOS; and OpenGL 3.3 plus X Window System or Wayland for Linux/Unix. These are baseline requirements, not an endorsement of any unexamined laptop or guarantee of 24/7 operation. OBS system requirements were published in 2021, so check the current requirements for your installed OBS version.

Decide whether the livestream will capture live sounds through a microphone or play a recording you have already produced. A USB microphone may be useful for recording original live sounds, and headphones can help you monitor the audio, but neither is required to stream existing audio files. YouTube lists external microphones among typical encoder-streaming equipment. YouTube’s encoder-streaming guide

Use audio and visuals you created or have permission to use. Copyright permission and monetization review are separate questions: permission to use a track does not by itself make a channel eligible for monetization. YouTube’s July 15, 2025 clarification says its policy now called “inauthentic content” covers repetitive or mass-produced material and applies to live streams as well as other videos. Make the channel distinctive through original performance, meaningful variation, or other real value; a static loop or lightly changed template is not assured monetizable content. Hindi language, ASMR as a genre, or livestream duration does not guarantee approval, revenue, or an audience. YouTube channel monetization policies
Set up OBS and YouTube Live
- Install OBS Studio. Confirm that your operating system and graphics meet the relevant basic requirements. Open OBS and use the Auto-Configuration Wizard as a starting point; treat its suggestions as settings to test, not a performance guarantee.
- Build a simple scene. Add the audio source and a static image or lightly animated visual. Avoid unnecessary browser sources, filters, and complex motion while you establish whether the laptop can sustain the stream.
- Create the broadcast in YouTube Studio. Use YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room to create or schedule a livestream, then obtain its server URL and stream key.
- Connect OBS to YouTube. Enter the server URL and stream key in OBS’s streaming settings, or connect the account through the available OBS workflow. Treat the stream key like a password. Reset it if it is exposed or compromised.
- Allow for first-time activation. YouTube says first-time live-stream activation may take up to 24 hours. Its computer livestream guidance also requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restriction in the past 90 days. YouTube: Create a live stream with an encoder
Choose OBS settings the laptop and connection can sustain
There is no universal setting that makes every older laptop reliable. Start modestly, then adjust only after testing the real scene. YouTube recommends choosing quality that fits available upload bandwidth, running a speed test, and leaving headroom for network variability. A speed test is an estimate, not proof that the connection will remain stable around the clock. YouTube recommended encoder settings

Use conservative video and audio settings
- Resolution and frame rate: Begin with a lower workload, such as 480p at 30 fps, if the laptop struggles. YouTube lists 0.3 Mbps as a recommended bitrate for 480p at 30 fps and 2 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps. These are platform recommendations, not guarantees that your encoder or upload connection can sustain either setting. YouTube recommended encoder settings
- Rate control: Use CBR, which YouTube recommends for encoder streams.
- Codec and protocol: YouTube recommends H.264 when streaming with RTMP/RTMPS.
- Keyframes: Set a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube says not to exceed four seconds.
- Audio: YouTube recommends AAC or MP3 audio for encoder streams. Listen to the stream preview and check for clipping, silence, or an incorrect source.
- Encoder: If the laptop has a supported hardware encoder, it may reduce CPU workload. Older hardware encoders can produce lower image quality at the same bitrate, and you should not assume a particular laptop supports one. OBS hardware encoding guidance
Use OBS’s statistics and YouTube’s Live Control Room stream-health indicators during testing. If frames are dropping, audio is breaking up, or the machine is running hot, reduce the resolution or frame rate, simplify the scene, or lower the bitrate to a level the connection can sustain. A high bitrate cannot fix an overloaded encoder or unstable internet.

- Run a private or otherwise non-public test using the same audio, visual sources, encoder, and network you plan to use.
- In the Live Control Room, check the preview and stream-health status. Listen on another device for audio problems and confirm that the intended audio source is being sent.
- Keep the test running long enough to reveal dropped frames, connection instability, audio faults, or overheating. No particular duration proves a laptop will remain reliable indefinitely.
- During a real broadcast, keep a way to check whether the stream is still live and respond to interruptions. Consider power loss, router failure, overheating, OBS crashes, and YouTube disconnects in your recovery plan.
YouTube says livestreams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Its guidance does not promise that one continuous stream longer than 12 hours will be archived, or that a stream will remain uninterrupted for 24 hours. For a channel presented as always on, plan supervised restarts and verify the current broadcast rather than promising a single unbroken stream. YouTube livestream archives

Common problems and practical fixes
- OBS will not run or has no compatible encoder: Recheck the current OBS system requirements and graphics driver. If the operating system or hardware is below the requirements, OBS may not be a workable option on that laptop.
- High CPU use, stuttering, or dropped frames: Simplify the scene, remove unnecessary filters and browser sources, lower resolution or frame rate, and test a supported hardware encoder if available. Hardware encoding can ease CPU load but may reduce quality on older hardware.
- Unstable stream health despite low CPU use: Check upload stability, use Ethernet if possible, and leave bandwidth headroom. Lower the bitrate if the connection cannot sustain it.
- Audio is missing, distorted, or out of sync: Check the selected OBS audio source and levels, monitor the preview on another device, and test again with the actual content before going public.
- The stream disconnects or the stream key fails: Confirm the correct broadcast and server settings in YouTube Studio, then re-enter the key. Reset the key if it may have been exposed. A laptop workflow requires someone or something to notice and recover from a disconnection.
- The laptop becomes hot or shuts down: Check airflow, vents, and power; reduce encoding and scene workload. If the machine cannot remain stable during a sustained test, do not depend on it for continuous streaming.
- The channel cannot go live yet: Check verification and live-stream restrictions in YouTube Studio. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the laptop cannot stay on reliably—or you do not want it running at home—StreamNeo keeps an uploaded video or playlist streaming to YouTube from the cloud. Upload your recording, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; the uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. For Hindi ASMR, use audio and visuals you have the right to stream, and remember that a cloud service does not change YouTube’s copyright or monetization policies. Start your free StreamNeo day.
