You can use an old laptop as the encoder for a 24/7 devotional YouTube stream if it can sustain your chosen video settings, power supply and internet upload connection. Set it up through YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and an encoder such as OBS, then rehearse at the intended location before going public. A laptop-based stream is not guaranteed to stay up: plan how you will monitor and restart it after an interruption.

Check YouTube live-stream access before preparing the broadcast

In YouTube Studio, verify the channel and confirm that live streaming is enabled. YouTube’s current Help guidance says the channel must have no live-stream restriction in the preceding 90 days, and the person streaming must be at least 16. First-time live-stream activation may take up to 24 hours, so enable it well before your planned launch. See YouTube’s live-streaming setup guidance and eligibility requirements.

Clear the rights to devotional music and visuals

Use recordings, performances, artwork, photographs and video that you own or have permission to broadcast. A devotional or traditional song is not automatically free to use: a modern recording or performance can have its own rights. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content, and a match can interrupt or end the broadcast. Even if you have a licence, ask the rights owner whether your channel needs to be allowlisted through Content ID. Read YouTube’s guidance on copyrighted content in live streams.

Set up the old laptop as an encoder

  1. Create the broadcast in YouTube Studio. Open Live Control Room, create or schedule a stream, and follow the current encoder instructions shown there. Use the stream details provided by YouTube to connect your encoder. YouTube describes an encoder as software or hardware that prepares video for streaming and lists OBS as a software option. Its encoder setup instructions may change, so use the labels and steps currently shown in your account.
  2. Install OBS and run its Auto-Configuration Wizard. OBS is open-source software available at no charge, including for commercial use. Use the wizard as a starting point, not as proof that the laptop can manage a continuous broadcast. OBS explains that workload depends on the encoder, resolution, frame rate and scene complexity; a compatible system may still be unable to stream adequately. See the OBS system requirements.
  3. Keep the scene simple. Start with a still devotional image or a low-motion loop. Avoid unnecessary browser sources, animated overlays and other effects that add processing load. Choose the resolution, frame rate and encoder settings based on the laptop’s actual capabilities rather than assuming a universal bitrate or setting will work.
  4. Protect the stream key. Copy it only into the encoder’s stream settings. Do not post or share it; anyone who obtains it may be able to broadcast to your channel. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder. Follow YouTube’s current stream-key instructions.
  5. Connect and confirm the preview. Start the encoder and check that Live Control Room receives the stream. Before going public, confirm the image, audio and stream-health status, then start the broadcast according to the controls shown in Live Control Room.

Rehearse on the laptop and internet connection you will actually use

Do a sustained rehearsal at the place where the stream will run, using the intended scene and settings. A quick speed test alone cannot show whether your connection will maintain the required upload continuously. TRAI’s MySpeed service can measure a connection, but the result for your own room, ISP plan, router and signal is what matters—not national averages or subscriber totals.

Watch OBS’s dropped-frame indicators during the rehearsal. OBS says rising dropped frames can mean the connection is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate. If you can, try a wired connection as a practical setup choice, but test it too: no connection type is reliable in every location. If frames keep dropping, reduce the stream’s demands or address the local network problem, then rehearse again before relying on the setup.

Keep the laptop powered, cool and awake

  • Run the laptop from its AC adapter and check that the adapter and battery are in suitable condition for extended use.
  • Provide ventilation and keep vents clear; a laptop that overheats may slow down or shut off.
  • Adjust the operating system’s power settings to prevent sleep or automatic shutdown during the broadcast.
  • If brief local power interruptions are a concern, consider a UPS for the laptop adapter and network equipment. Choose it for the actual connected load and check its expected runtime. A UPS cannot keep the stream online if the ISP or upstream network is down.

Test the complete setup, including any local recording, for an extended period. The right UPS capacity, laptop capability and power-outage plan depend on your equipment and location; there is no single specification that guarantees a 24/7 stream.

Choose how to handle replays and long broadcasts

YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, while a stream over 12 hours may not be captured at all. If you need a replay, do not assume one uninterrupted day-long broadcast will produce an archive. YouTube recommends keeping a local recording backup; that requires enough disk space and can add work to the laptop, so test recording during the rehearsal. Another option is to schedule shorter sessions and verify YouTube’s current archive behavior before depending on it. See YouTube’s live-stream archive guidance.

Monitor the broadcast and rehearse recovery

A 24-hour stream needs an operating plan, not just a successful initial launch. Keep Live Control Room and the encoder status available to whoever is responsible for the broadcast. Decide who will check the stream and who can restart OBS or the laptop. During the rehearsal, practice what to do after an encoder crash, computer restart, power loss or internet outage; after restarting, confirm in Live Control Room that the stream is live again.

For a single-channel devotional setup, YouTube’s limits of 10 active streams per channel and three streams per stream key are unlikely to matter. They may be relevant if you later manage multiple simultaneous broadcasts; check YouTube’s live-stream eligibility and limits guidance.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you do not want the laptop and home connection to run continuously, StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The service loops the videos from the cloud, so your computer does not need to stay on. It does not stream from a camera.
