Pair the remote with its compatible Chromecast with Google TV or Google TV Streamer first. Then use All settings > Remotes & Accessories > Set up remote buttons to configure Volume, Power, and, if supported, Input for your TV, soundbar, or receiver. These external-device controls use infrared (IR), so point the remote at the target device when testing. Compatibility varies by device and function.
What the remote controls—and what it does not
The remote handles two separate jobs. Its navigation buttons control the Google streaming device over its device connection; its configurable Volume, Power, and Input buttons can control a TV, soundbar, or receiver using IR. Google lists IR control for external devices and Bluetooth connectivity for the Google TV Streamer Voice Remote. That does not make every Google TV remote a universal remote: a particular TV or audio device may not support every function.
Set up TV or soundbar controls
- Pair the remote with the streaming device. Turn on the Chromecast with Google TV or Google TV Streamer and follow the on-screen setup. During initial Chromecast setup, the Voice Remote usually pairs automatically. If the screen asks you to start pairing, hold Back and Home until the remote light pulses.
- Open the button setup screen. On the streaming device, go to All settings > Remotes & Accessories > Set up remote buttons. You can configure the buttons here even if you skipped this step during initial setup.
- Configure Volume. Choose Volume, select the device that produces sound, and choose its brand. Make sure that device is turned on and has sound enabled. When the setup tone plays, point the remote at it and test volume up and down. Confirm on screen if the buttons work; retry if they do not.
- Configure Power. Choose Power and select the target device. Press the remote’s power button, wait eight seconds, turn the device back on, and confirm whether the test worked.
- Configure Input, if available. Choose Input and cycle through the TV’s inputs. If the button works, switch back to the HDMI input used by your streaming device. Some models do not support Input control.
Volume, Power, and Input are separate settings. Set up and test each function you want to use; success with one does not establish that the others will work.

If navigation works but TV or soundbar control does not
When the remote navigates the streaming device but cannot change TV volume or power, Google identifies IR as a likely issue. Check that the intended TV or audio device is selected under Settings > Remotes & Accessories > Set up remote buttons, then reconfigure the failing function and point the remote directly at the device while testing.

Also check which device is assigned to Volume. If you selected the streaming device rather than the TV, receiver, or soundbar, the remote changes the streaming device’s own volume instead. Mixing volume controls can behave unexpectedly: for example, muting the TV with its own remote can leave it muted even after you raise the streaming-device volume.
If the intended device is selected and pointing the remote at it does not help, that model may not support the function you are trying to set up. Test Volume, Power, and Input individually rather than assuming that one working button means all are compatible.

If the remote is missing or broken
Google documents replacement Voice Remotes for Chromecast with Google TV and Google TV Streamer. Check which streaming device you own before choosing a replacement: the phrase “old Google TV remote” does not identify a generation or guarantee that remotes are interchangeable. A replacement’s listed external-device features also cannot guarantee that a particular TV or soundbar will respond.
