Use Apple’s built-in Continuity Camera to use an iPhone as a Mac webcam—no extra app is required. The feature works wirelessly or by USB when both devices meet Apple’s requirements: an iPhone XR or later running iOS 16 or later, and a Mac compatible with macOS Ventura 13 or later. The same basic setup applies across iOS 16, 17, 18, 26 and 27; Apple’s current guides do not describe a different setup for each of those versions.
Check that your iPhone and Mac are compatible
For Continuity Camera webcam use, Apple requires an iPhone XR or later with iOS 16 or later and a Mac that supports macOS Ventura 13 or later. These are the webcam feature’s minimums, not guarantees that every camera effect is available on every supported iPhone. See Apple’s Continuity Camera requirements before troubleshooting a device that does not appear.
Webcam use has different requirements from Continuity Camera’s document-scanning and photo-capture features. Do not apply those features’ compatibility rules to using an iPhone as a Mac camera.
Prepare both devices
-
On the iPhone, open Settings > General > AirPlay & Continuity and turn on Continuity Camera. Depending on the software version or regional instructions, the menu may be labeled AirPlay & Handoff. Apple says Continuity Camera is on by default, but checking the setting can help if the iPhone is not detected.

Apple Support says Continuity Camera works “wired or wirelessly.” USB adds a cable and trust prompts, but can charge the iPhone; wireless avoids the cable and depends on proximity, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and the additional network conditions above. Apple does not say that one connection method is universally better. See Apple’s setup instructions for details.

Position the phone and choose camera effects
For a normal webcam view, keep the iPhone steady, with the rear camera unobstructed and aimed at you. You can use the iPhone’s camera as-is or choose an effect if your device and app support it. Options documented by Apple include Center Stage, Portrait mode, Studio Light, Edge Light and Desk View; availability differs by effect and iPhone model.

Center Stage keeps a supported subject in frame. For Continuity Camera, Apple’s current requirements specify iPhone 11 or later and exclude iPhone SE models. Desk View provides an overhead view of the workspace; for Continuity Camera, it excludes iPhone 16e and iPhone SE models. Check Apple’s current feature requirements for the effect you want rather than assuming that baseline webcam compatibility includes it.
Where available, choose effects from the video app or the Mac’s video controls. Apple documents the Video menu for macOS Sonoma 14 or later, and Control Center > Video Effects for Center Stage on macOS Ventura 13 and Monterey 12. The precise controls depend on the macOS version and app.

For wireless use, check that AirPlay or Sidecar is not active and that internet sharing or VPN local-network restrictions are not blocking the connection.
-
The cable connection does not work: Check the cable, tap Trust on the iPhone if prompted, and approve any Mac accessory-connection alert.

-
The camera stops after a restart: Unlock the iPhone once after restarting it, then lock it and mount it again. Apple recommends keeping iOS, macOS and the video app current; you can also try reconnecting by USB or restarting both devices.
-
Video pauses when you unlock the iPhone or receive a call: Unlocking the iPhone can pause the camera session, and an incoming call may interrupt video or audio. Lock and mount the iPhone again, then reselect or restart the camera in the Mac app.
-
Wireless use affects Wi-Fi: Apple says the iPhone may disconnect from Wi-Fi to optimize Continuity Camera, using mobile data for background tasks. Connecting the iPhone to power or turning off mobile data can prevent this uncommon occurrence.
Apple’s Continuity Camera guide provides the setup and troubleshooting requirements.
