Use GitHub Projects as the tracking layer, not as the image service itself. Call an image API, save the returned URL and metadata, place that information in an issue, pull request, comment, or draft issue, then add the work item to a ProjectV2 board and update its fields through GitHub’s GraphQL API. This design keeps binary files and image generation outside Projects while making status, ownership, review, and automation visible to your team.
What the integration actually does
An image API can generate, transform, or store an image. GitHub Projects tracks the work around that image. A typical flow is:
- The image service returns a file or durable URL, an identifier, dimensions, and any expiration or content-safety metadata.
- Your automation creates or selects a GitHub issue, pull request, or draft issue that represents the image task.
- The automation writes the URL and metadata into the item’s body, a comment, or a ProjectV2 text field.
- The item is added to a ProjectV2 board and its status, priority, owner, date, or other fields are updated.
- Project webhooks notify downstream systems when the item changes, avoiding constant polling.
Projects does not turn an external URL into a managed image asset. Decide separately whether the URL is acceptable for long-term display or whether the image belongs in GitHub-supported issue, pull-request, or comment attachments.
Choose where the image data belongs
| Storage location | Use it for | Important consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Issue or pull-request body | A permanent-looking work record, review instructions, and a Markdown image link | The external URL must remain reachable; an expiring URL will eventually break. |
| Issue, pull-request, or comment attachment | The image itself is part of the discussion or approval evidence | GitHub’s attachment size, type, and plan behavior can change; verify current limits. |
| Comment | Generation results, revisions, or audit events that should remain chronological | Comments can become noisy when an automation posts every retry. |
| ProjectV2 text field | A short URL, asset ID, or machine-readable reference used in views and filters | Project fields are metadata, not a replacement for image storage. |
| Issue or pull-request labels | Simple states such as image-ready or needs-review |
Labels are useful for humans but do not hold dimensions, prompts, or URLs. |
When an image is part of the conversation, attach it through GitHub’s supported browser or CLI mechanisms and reference it with Markdown. When the image service owns the asset, store its URL and identifier and document its retention policy.

Permissions and identifiers you must resolve first
GitHub’s Projects GraphQL guide distinguishes read-only and mutating access. Use a token with read:project for queries only. Use project when the automation reads and changes Projects. GitHub CLI authentication for mutations is:
gh auth login --scopes "project"
Before a mutation, resolve all of these values:
- The ProjectV2 node ID for the organization or user-owned project.
- The issue, pull-request, or draft item ID that will appear in the project.
- The ProjectV2 item ID returned after the item is added.
- The field ID for Status, text, number, date, single-select, or iteration fields.
- The option ID for a single-select value such as Ready for review.
Do not substitute a project number for a node ID. ProjectV2 mutations require the IDs returned by GraphQL queries.
End-to-end implementation sequence
1. Call the image API and retain its response
Your image request should capture more than the URL. Persist the provider’s asset ID, width, height, MIME type, creation time, expiration time, and safety result when those values are available. Treat a temporary URL as a cache or preview, not as your only record.
For a screenshot service, the response body is the image bytes rather than JSON. Save the bytes to durable storage if you need to attach the file, or use a signed URL when the service provides one.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2. Create or select a GitHub work item
Use an existing issue or pull request when the work already has a discussion. Use addProjectV2DraftIssue when the automation should create a lightweight project item without first creating a repository issue. Include a stable image reference in the title or body so retries can find the same work.

- The adjustable universal clip lets you attach the camera securely to your screen or laptop, or fold the clip and set the webcam on a shelf. You’re always ready for your next video call.
3. Add the item to ProjectV2
For an existing issue or pull request, call addProjectV2ItemById. For a draft, call addProjectV2DraftIssue. The item must exist in the project before you can update one of its field values.
4. Update fields
Use updateProjectV2ItemFieldValue for supported field types. Status and other single-select fields need the option ID, while text, number, date, and iteration fields use their corresponding value shape. Keep the image URL in a text field only when it is short enough and your team accepts its retention behavior; otherwise keep the canonical URL in the issue body.
5. React to changes with webhooks
Project webhooks can notify an automation service when items change. Verify the webhook signature, process events idempotently, and acknowledge quickly. Queue slow image work instead of making GitHub wait for a generation request.

-H "Content-Type: application/json"
--data @- <<'JSON'
{"query":"mutation($project:ID!,$content:ID!){addProjectV2ItemById(input:{projectId:$project,contentId:$content}){item{id}}}","variables":{"project":"PVT_kwDOExample","content":"I_kwDOExample"}}

JSON
Use {"singleSelectOptionId":"OPTION_ID"} instead of text for a single-select field. Query the field and option IDs first; field names are not sufficient for mutations.
Python request pattern
import os, requests

variables = {"project": os.environ["PROJECT_ID"], "content": os.environ["CONTENT_ID"]}

Node.js request pattern
const query = `mutation($project:ID!,$content:ID!){addProjectV2ItemById(input:{projectId:$project,contentId:$content}){item{id}}}`;
const res = await fetch('https://api.github.com/graphql', {
method: 'POST',

'Authorization': `bearer ${process.env.GITHUB_TOKEN}`,
'Content-Type': 'application/json'
},
body: JSON.stringify({
query,
variables: { project: process.env.PROJECT_ID, content: process.env.CONTENT_ID }

const payload = await res.json();
if (payload.errors) throw new Error(JSON.stringify(payload.errors));
console.log(payload.data.addProjectV2ItemById.item.id);
Store an image in issue Markdown
If your provider returns a durable public URL, add a Markdown reference to the issue or pull-request body:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →## Generated asset

- Provider asset ID: IMAGE_ID
- Width: 1600
- Height: 900
- Generated: 2026-09-30T12:00:00Z
- Expiration: none stated by provider
Escape or sanitize user-supplied titles and URLs before writing Markdown. Do not expose private tokens in the body. If the URL requires authentication, attach the file through GitHub’s supported attachment flow or place it behind an access-controlled viewer instead of publishing a broken link.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF, so an automation can save the result and put its URL or asset metadata into the GitHub item without maintaining a headless browser.
It removes cookie-consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and each response identifies the page verdict and billing result in headers. Its MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Reliability, performance, and cost controls
- Make retries safe. Store a provider request ID and a deterministic job key. On retry, search for the existing issue or project item before creating another one.
- Separate long-running work. Generate the image asynchronously, then update GitHub after the provider confirms completion. Do not hold a webhook request open during image rendering.
- Respect rate limits. Back off on HTTP 429 and transient 5xx responses. Do not retry validation errors or missing permissions.
- Validate URLs. Check scheme, host policy, expiration, and response type before putting a link into Markdown.
- Keep payloads small. Put large prompts and binary data in object storage or the image provider; keep ProjectV2 fields to identifiers and short references.
- Observe the pipeline. Log correlation ID, provider status, GitHub mutation name, item ID, and final field value without logging secrets.
- Control spend. Cache identical captures or generations, avoid regenerating unchanged inputs, and use webhooks rather than polling every project item.
Troubleshooting
“Resource not accessible by integration”
The token lacks the required Projects permission or belongs to an actor without access to the organization or user project. Re-authenticate with project for mutations, verify repository and organization access, and retry with the intended identity.
“Could not resolve to a node with the global id”
A project, content item, field, or option ID is wrong, or it belongs to another account. Query the relevant organization or user project again and use the returned node ID, not a display number.
The field mutation fails after the item was created
The item may not yet be in the project, or the field value shape does not match the field type. Use the item ID returned by addProjectV2ItemById or addProjectV2DraftIssue, then send text, number, date, singleSelectOptionId, or the supported iteration value appropriate to that field.
Recommended Free Tools
The image link is broken in GitHub
The URL may be private, expired, blocked by a firewall, or returning HTML instead of an image. Record expiration metadata, test the URL from an unauthenticated viewer when it is intended to be public, and attach the file through GitHub’s supported mechanism when long-term persistence is required.

Duplicate issues or project items appear
Your retry path is not idempotent. Save a deterministic job key in the issue body or an external database, search before creating, and treat an “already exists” response as success after verifying the matching asset ID.
Webhook processing repeats events
Webhook delivery can be retried. Verify the signature, store processed delivery IDs, and make each update safe to run more than once before returning a success response.
Practical design checklist
- Image response captured: URL, ID, dimensions, MIME type, expiration, and safety metadata.
- Least-privilege GitHub token selected:
read:projectfor reads orprojectfor mutations. - ProjectV2, field, and single-select option IDs resolved dynamically.
- Issue, pull request, or draft issue added before field updates.
- Canonical image storage chosen deliberately: provider URL, GitHub attachment, or both.
- Retries, rate limits, duplicate prevention, and webhook delivery handled.
- Current GitHub API versioning, attachment limits, and the image provider’s URL-retention policy checked before release.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a ProjectV2 field contain the image binary itself?
No. Use a text or URL reference in the field and keep the binary in a supported attachment system or image storage service.
Should I create an issue or a draft issue?
Use an existing issue or pull request when discussion and review already exist; use a draft issue for a project-only task that does not yet need a repository conversation.
Is polling required to keep a project synchronized?
No. Project webhooks can notify your service about item changes; polling remains a fallback when webhook delivery is unsuitable.
