You can use an external SSD to store prerecorded videos for an always-on YouTube stream, but the SSD does not create or transmit the stream. A computer running encoder software must read the files, encode the video, and send it to YouTube over a stable internet connection. That means the computer, SSD, encoder, and connection all need to remain available.
How the SSD fits into an always-on stream
The SSD is the video library: it holds the files that your playback or streaming software uses. The encoder—software on a computer or compatible standalone hardware—sends a live feed to YouTube using the stream URL and stream key. YouTube describes these encoder options and setup in its encoder setup guide.
For a basic local setup, the path is: external SSD → computer and encoder software → internet connection → YouTube Live. If the computer sleeps, the drive disconnects, playback stops, or the connection fails, the feed may be interrupted.
Set up a local SSD video library
- Prepare the library. Copy only videos you have the right to broadcast to the external SSD. Keep a second copy of important source files; one SSD is not a backup. Organize files into clearly named folders or a playlist your playback software can use.
- Connect and verify the drive. Start by plugging the SSD directly into a suitable USB port with its appropriate cable. Confirm that the operating system mounts it and that your playback or encoder software can open the files. Test every file type you plan to use; compatibility depends on the software and media formats.
- Configure the playback source. In your encoder software, select the video file or playlist as a source. Set the playback behavior—such as looping or advancing through the playlist—using that software’s controls. Verify that the source continues cleanly from the end of one file to the next.
- Connect the encoder to YouTube Live. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or select the stream. Copy the stream URL and stream key into the encoder’s YouTube or custom-server settings. Treat the stream key like a password: do not publish it, and reset it in YouTube if it is exposed.
- Choose output settings for your video and connection. YouTube recommends RTMPS for the common RTMP(S) workflow and publishes separate bitrate recommendations by resolution, frame rate, and codec. Choose the row that matches your actual output rather than treating any one bitrate as universal. YouTube’s current encoder settings and bitrate guidance includes recommendations from 3 Mbps for 480p30 H.264 through 50 Mbps for 2160p60 H.264. The appropriate setting depends on your selected format and available upload capacity.
- Test before relying on it. Use a representative section with movement and audio, then check the preview and stream health in YouTube Studio. YouTube recommends testing with content similar to the planned stream and monitoring stream health. Confirm that audio is present, motion looks acceptable, and the playlist transitions as expected before leaving the setup unattended.
Keep the computer and SSD available
Prevent host sleep
Set the computer not to sleep while the stream is running, and check both system power settings and any vendor utility that controls USB power. A sleeping host can stop encoding even if the SSD remains connected.

Reduce drive disconnects
SanDisk’s general external-drive guidance says continuous powered use is acceptable, recommends ventilation, and notes that a powered USB hub may help with non-powered drives used for continuous access. This is general vendor guidance, not a guarantee for every SSD. Begin with a direct connection; add a suitable powered hub only if USB power or connectivity is a problem, or the drive manufacturer recommends one.
SanDisk lists loose or faulty cables, standby settings, non-powered hubs, insufficient USB power, file-system issues, background reads, and drive failure among possible causes of external-drive disconnections. Its guidance was updated in 2026; the right fix depends on the computer, operating system, hub, SSD, and symptom. See its pages on continuous powered use and ventilation, sleep and standby behavior, and external-drive disconnections.

Plan for a long run
Run a supervised test long enough to observe playlist transitions and stream health. There is no universal test duration that proves a local setup will remain reliable indefinitely. Monitor the computer, encoder, connection, and YouTube status when the stream matters; a single external SSD and home computer do not provide a documented uptime guarantee.
Choose the right way to keep the stream running
| Approach | Where files are read and encoded | What to weigh |
|---|---|---|
| StreamNeo | Upload prerecorded videos to StreamNeo’s cloud service, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. | Always-on from the cloud, any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and the first day free. It removes the need to keep a home computer running. |
| Computer plus external SSD | The computer reads the SSD and runs encoder software. | Local control, but the computer, drive, encoder, and home upload connection must remain available. |
| Standalone hardware encoder | A dedicated encoder sends the stream; prerecorded-media and storage support vary by device. | Confirm that the specific hardware can play your files and automate playback. YouTube’s encoder guide lists hardware examples, including AJA HELO Plus and its PlayToStream function for prerecorded media. |
| Another cloud prerecorded-video service | Media is uploaded and streamed from the provider’s infrastructure. | Consider its upload and storage workflow, service limits, recurring cost, and dependence on the provider. YouTube lists Gyre for continuous streams from an existing content library; check current terms and availability with the service. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If you do not want your computer and SSD to stay on at home, StreamNeo keeps a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The cloud service loops the uploaded video, so no computer, OBS, or home connection has to stay on. It streams to YouTube, not to other platforms.

Troubleshooting an interrupted stream
- The SSD disappears or playback stops: Reseat the cable, try a known-good cable or another USB port, and connect directly to the computer. Check sleep and USB power settings. If the issue points to inadequate port power or a hub, try an appropriate powered hub. Persistent disconnects can also indicate file-system trouble or drive failure.
- The encoder cannot read a file: Confirm the drive is mounted and the file opens in the intended software. Check that the media format is supported by that playback or encoder application; the exact compatible formats depend on the software and device.
- YouTube reports poor stream health: Check the encoder’s output resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate against YouTube’s recommendation for that combination. Test upload capacity and reduce output demands if the connection cannot sustain the selected bitrate.
- The computer stops sending video: Check whether the host slept, the encoder stopped, or the playback source ended rather than looping. Review the computer’s power settings and the encoder’s status before restarting the stream.
- The stream plays but has missing audio or broken transitions: Repeat the preflight test with representative audio and movement. Inspect the source configuration and playlist behavior in the encoder, then verify the preview before leaving it unattended.
