To stop Gemini in Chrome from automatically receiving the page you are viewing, turn off Share current tab by default. In Chrome, open More > Settings > AI innovations > Gemini in Chrome > Permissions, then switch that setting off. In any chat that already contains a shared tab, use the shared-tabs control above the message box to remove it separately. Changing the default does not withdraw a tab that an existing conversation already lists.
These controls govern Gemini in Chrome, not every AI extension or the separate Gemini website. Feature names and availability can vary by Chrome version, account type and rollout region.
What “without sharing your open tabs” actually means
Gemini in Chrome can use the page in your current tab as context. Google’s Chrome Help documentation says that when Gemini in Chrome opens, the current tab is shared by default. The shared information is more than a screenshot: Google’s privacy explanation says Gemini processes the page content and URL from the current tab and from any other tabs you add. Some of the content used may not be visible in the page you are looking at.

Turning off the default permission prevents automatic sharing in new chats. It does not disable Gemini, erase previous conversations, stop all Google account processing, or remove a tab that is already attached to a chat. You must check each existing conversation and remove unwanted tabs.

Default sharing on versus default sharing off
There are three separate states to understand:

This is a permission and workflow choice, not a promise that Chrome stops processing every kind of browser data. If you send text in a prompt, that text is still sent. Websites, Chrome, your Google Account and other extensions can have separate storage and privacy practices.
Turn off automatic current-tab sharing
- Open Chrome on your computer.
- Select More (the three-dot menu) and choose Settings.
- Open AI innovations, then select Gemini in Chrome.
- Under Permissions, turn off Share current tab by default.
You can also paste chrome://settings/ai/gemini into Chrome’s address bar to open the documented settings page directly. The labels in the interface can change as Chrome rolls out updates; Google’s current end-user instructions are at Use Gemini in Chrome – Computer.
What changes after the switch is off
When you start a new Gemini in Chrome chat, the current page should not be attached automatically. You can still ask general questions, draft text or request help that does not require the page’s contents. If you deliberately share a tab later, that action overrides the default for that chat.

- A tab already shown in a chat’s shared-tabs list remains available until you remove it.
- Adding a tab with the Add tabs control or selecting one with
@shares that tab intentionally. - The setting does not delete Gemini chats or change the broader Gemini Apps Activity setting.
- It does not change the behavior of a separate Gemini website session or another AI browser extension.
Remove tabs that a chat has already received
Changing the default is only half of the job. Check every conversation in which you used Gemini in Chrome, especially chats started before you changed the permission.
- Open the Gemini in Chrome conversation.
- Look above the text box for the shared-tabs control. It lists the tabs currently available to Gemini.
- Remove each page that should no longer be used as context.
- Confirm that the unwanted tab no longer appears in the list before sending another prompt.
Chrome indicates current-tab sharing with a glowing underline. When you remove the current tab through the shared-tabs control, that underline disappears. A removed tab is no longer available to Gemini for subsequent prompts in that conversation, but removing it is not the same as deleting any chat record or other information that may already have been processed.
Why a new chat may still need checking
Turning off the default protects new conversations from automatic current-tab attachment, but a chat can still receive a page when you explicitly choose it. Before a sensitive prompt, look for the shared-tabs indicator rather than relying only on the global toggle. If you opened a conversation from a page that was already shared, inspect the list again before continuing.
Do not share tabs accidentally
Avoid the explicit sharing controls
After disabling the default, do not use Add tabs unless you intend to provide page context. The @ tab selector is another deliberate sharing route. Tabs opened from a chat or from a shared tab can also be shared, so treat links opened within a Gemini-assisted workflow as potentially in scope until you inspect the shared-tabs list.

- Read the shared-tabs list above the message field.
- Remove work dashboards, customer records, private messages, medical pages, financial accounts and any other sensitive tabs.
- Only then type or send the prompt.
- Recheck the list after opening a page from the conversation, because a newly opened or linked tab can become available to the chat.
- For a shared computer, close or switch away from sensitive pages before opening Gemini, then verify the list anyway.
Understand the tab limit
Google Chrome Help says a user can share up to 10 open tabs. That is a maximum for tabs supplied to a chat, not a promise that sharing is limited to only the visible text in those tabs. If you do not want any page content or URL sent, share no tabs at all.

What Gemini receives when a tab is shared
According to Google’s Gemini Apps Privacy Hub (last updated September 24, 2026), Gemini in Chrome collects and processes the page content and URL from the current tab and from other tabs you share. The notice cautions that some page content Gemini uses might not be visible to you. Consequently, “I cannot see it on screen” is not a reliable privacy test for content in a shared page.
Page context can include text loaded in the document, links and other information represented in the page. The privacy notice does not turn the setting into a universal browser privacy switch: it describes Gemini’s handling of tabs you provide, while Chrome and a website may have their own storage, logging and permissions.
What if the page contains hidden or dynamically loaded material?
Do not assume that collapsed text, content below the fold or material not currently visible is excluded. Google’s wording specifically says that some page content Gemini uses might not be visible to you. The safest boundary is to share no tab when the page contains information you do not want processed, rather than trying to hide individual sections on screen.

Disabling Share current tab by default controls whether page context is automatically supplied to new Gemini in Chrome chats. It does not itself change the Keep Activity setting in Gemini Apps.
If Keep Activity is on
Google says information from websites visited with Gemini in Chrome, along with audio and files shared with Gemini, is stored in Gemini Apps Activity when Keep Activity is enabled. The same privacy hub says page content is temporarily logged to the Google Account but does not appear on the Gemini Apps Activity page. These statements describe different forms of handling; turning off automatic tab sharing does not erase either previous chats or prior logs.
Retention language that needs careful reading
The broader Gemini Apps notice says chats and shared content may be used to provide, develop and improve services when Keep Activity is on, including possible human review. It says some reviewed material may be retained for up to three years. That is a general Gemini Apps term, not a claim that every page shared through Gemini in Chrome is kept for three years. The Chrome-specific section separately describes temporary page-content logging.
For current controls and account-specific options, review the privacy hub linked above rather than assuming that the Chrome permission changes activity-history settings. If a page was shared accidentally, changing the toggle is useful for future chats, but it cannot reliably undo processing that already occurred.

For general questions
With default sharing off and no tabs in the shared list, ask the question without referring to the page you have open. For example, ask for an explanation of a programming concept or a rewrite of text that you paste into the prompt. Do not use the tab selector or attach a page if the text itself contains confidential information.

For a page you decide to share temporarily
- Leave default sharing off.
- Open a chat and inspect the shared-tabs area to verify that it is empty.
- Add only the specific tab needed for the question.
- Send the prompt, then remove the tab from the shared-tabs list when finished.
- Before starting another sensitive task, open a new chat or confirm that no tab remains attached.
This workflow gives you an explicit decision for each page instead of allowing every new chat to inherit the current tab automatically. It is particularly useful when you move between public documentation and confidential work pages in the same browser window.
For text that must stay out of browser context
Copy only the minimum non-sensitive excerpt into the prompt, after removing names, account numbers, URLs and other identifiers. If the text is too sensitive to send to Gemini, do not paste it either; the tab-sharing setting cannot make a prompt containing that text private from the service.
When you need page help but not the whole page
First remove the tab from the shared list. Then paste a carefully edited excerpt, such as a generic error message or a short paragraph with identifying details removed. This does not create a special private mode; it simply limits the material you voluntarily include in the prompt compared with sharing the entire tab.
Work and school accounts have additional conditions
Personal and managed accounts should not be treated as equivalent. Google’s Chrome Enterprise and Education guidance for Gemini in Chrome describes protections for qualifying Workspace editions. Under the terms described there, prompts and current-tab context are used to generate responses with user consent and are not used to train generative AI models; existing data-protection controls apply.
The same guidance says administrators can govern Auto Browse, and that Auto Browse is off by default for managed users. Whether those protections apply depends on the Workspace edition, the organization’s policies and the account used to sign in. They should not be assumed for a personal Google account. If your organization manages Chrome, ask the administrator which Gemini features, logging rules and data-protection terms are enabled.
An administrator may also control whether Gemini in Chrome is available at all. A work profile and a personal profile on the same computer can therefore show different permissions or feature labels. Check which Google Account is active before relying on an organization’s terms.
Troubleshooting
The setting is missing
- Confirm that you are using Chrome on a supported computer configuration rather than a different browser or the standalone Gemini web app.
- Update Chrome and reopen
chrome://settings/ai/gemini. - Check whether your account, country or Chrome rollout has access to Gemini in Chrome. Google’s feature overview notes that eligibility can vary; see AI in Chrome for the current availability information.
- If Chrome is managed by an employer or school, an administrator may control or hide the setting.
- Make sure you are looking under AI innovations; the separate Gemini website’s settings do not necessarily contain this browser permission.
A tab is still listed after you turned the default off
The default applies to future automatic sharing. Open the affected chat and remove the tab manually through the shared-tabs control. Start a new chat only after confirming that the list is empty.
The glowing underline remains
The underline indicates that the current tab is still shared with Gemini. Use the shared-tabs control above the text box, remove the current tab and check that the underline disappears. If another tab remains listed, remove that one as well.

Gemini mentions information from a page you did not intend to share
- Stop sending prompts in that conversation.
- Inspect and clear the shared-tabs list.
- Review whether you selected a tab with
@, used Add tabs or opened a page from a Gemini chat. - Review Gemini Apps Activity and the privacy controls in your Google Account if the conversation contained sensitive information.
- Record which account and Chrome profile were active if you need help from an administrator.
Changing the permission cannot reliably undo processing that occurred before the tab was removed. It prevents further automatic sharing; it is not a retroactive deletion command.
The current tab is not shared, but Gemini still answers from something I pasted
That is expected. The setting controls tab context, not prompt content. Remove confidential details before sending text, or do not send the text at all if it is too sensitive.
