OBS needs a compatible ingest endpoint; CloudFront’s documented role is to deliver already encoded and packaged video from an origin to viewers. For an AWS-based live workflow, send OBS output to a compatible ingest service, process it with AWS Elemental MediaLive and MediaPackage or MediaStore, and use CloudFront to deliver the resulting stream.
Why OBS does not connect directly to CloudFront
OBS Studio is the broadcaster’s software encoder and output client. Its Stream settings let you choose a streaming service or custom server and enter that destination’s server URL and stream key. Those details must come from a compatible ingest service.
CloudFront is a content delivery network: viewers request live video from a CloudFront distribution, which routes requests to an origin. AWS’s CloudFront video guidance states, “You must use an encoder to package video content before CloudFront can distribute the content.” In AWS’s documented live workflow, encoding and packaging or an appropriate origin happen before CloudFront delivery. Do not paste a CloudFront distribution domain into OBS as if it were an RTMP ingest URL. AWS also documents a legacy RTMP StreamingDistribution API for delivery of RTMP content from an origin; that is not evidence that CloudFront is an OBS ingest endpoint for the documented HTTP live-video workflow. Choose an AWS live-stream architecture
A practical managed design separates ingest, encoding, packaging or origin, and delivery. The precise services depend on the format your viewers need and the playback features you require.
MediaLive with MediaPackage
Use AWS Elemental MediaLive as the real-time encoder and MediaPackage to package the live output when you need content formatted for multiple device types or features such as DRM. CloudFront then delivers from the MediaPackage endpoint to viewers. AWS’s CloudFront live-streaming guide describes this pattern.

MediaLive with MediaStore
MediaStore is an origin option when MediaLive’s output is already in the formats required by the viewer devices. It is not interchangeable with MediaPackage in every setup: choose based on whether additional packaging or features are needed. Consult AWS’s live-streaming documentation for the matching workflow.
Reference architecture and operational scope
AWS’s Live Streaming on AWS reference solution illustrates a larger production-oriented design using MediaLive, MediaPackage, CloudFront, a playback player, and authorization between MediaPackage and CloudFront. Treat it as an architecture example, not a mandatory minimum for every broadcaster. These managed services also introduce operational complexity and service costs; current prices are not established here.

Configure OBS to send to the ingest service
Configure the compatible ingest destination first. AWS’s OBS guidance does not provide a universal AWS ingest URL or stream key, so use the actual connection details supplied by the ingest service you selected rather than inventing or substituting a CloudFront domain.
- Get the destination details. In the ingest service, create or select a live input and obtain its server URL and stream key. Confirm the required protocol and any account-side stream configuration with that service.
- Open OBS’s Stream settings. In OBS Studio, open Settings > Stream. Select a listed service if the destination is supported there; otherwise select the custom streaming server option.
- Enter the server and key. Paste the ingest service’s server URL and stream key into the corresponding fields. Keep the key private; anyone with access to it may be able to broadcast to that input.
- Set output for the destination. Match OBS’s encoder, bitrate, resolution, frame rate, and keyframe settings to the ingest service’s published requirements and your available upload bandwidth. OBS advises accounting for both upload speed and service limits; its Twitch-specific bitrate example is not a CloudFront limit or a universal recommendation. Leave defaults unless you have a reason to change them, and account for the greater system load that 60 fps can impose compared with 30 fps. See the OBS streaming quick-start guide.
- Start and verify the stream. Start streaming in OBS, then check the ingest, encoding or packaging service, and viewer playback path. Confirm that the output is available through the CloudFront distribution and that the player can load its manifest and media segments.
Configure CloudFront for live delivery
For a MediaPackage live channel, AWS’s workflow uses the MediaPackage endpoint as an HTTPS origin for the CloudFront distribution. Set the origin path as appropriate for that endpoint and configure cache behaviors for the manifest and segment requests. Do not apply one generic behavior without checking the endpoint format and enabled features.

Match behaviors to the output format

AWS recommends a minimum TTL of five seconds or less for these live cache policies to help avoid stale content. The correct behavior depends on the endpoint’s format and features; follow the relevant section of AWS’s live-streaming guide.
Account for LL-HLS and origin authorization
If the workflow uses LL-HLS, forward the _HLS_msn and _HLS_part query parameters on manifest requests. AWS also recommends enabling header-based MediaPackage CDN authorization between MediaPackage and the CloudFront distribution. Omitting query forwarding can interfere with low-latency requests; omitting the recommended authorization setup can leave the origin-to-CDN access design incomplete. Check AWS’s format- and feature-specific configuration before deploying.

Troubleshoot common connection and playback failures
- OBS will not connect: Check that OBS contains the ingest service’s actual server URL and key, not the CloudFront distribution domain. Verify the selected service or custom-server mode against the ingest provider’s instructions.
- OBS connects but no video reaches viewers: Trace the stream through ingest, MediaLive, packaging or origin, then CloudFront. A working OBS connection alone does not confirm that the origin is producing a playable output or that CloudFront can retrieve it.
- Playback shows stale or delayed live content: Check the live cache behavior’s minimum TTL; AWS advises five seconds or less for the relevant live policies. Also verify the manifest and segment patterns match the output format.
- LL-HLS requests fail or lose low-latency behavior: Confirm that
_HLS_msnand_HLS_partare forwarded on manifest requests. - CloudFront cannot retrieve MediaPackage content: Review the HTTPS origin configuration, origin path, endpoint format, and header-based CDN authorization recommended for MediaPackage-to-CloudFront access.
- Playback fails on a particular device: Check that the chosen packaging or origin output format is supported by that viewer device. MediaPackage may be appropriate when the workflow needs output formatted for multiple device types; MediaStore is an option when the encoded output is already in the required formats.
