AI writing tools can help your prose sound clearer and more natural, but none of the cited guidance establishes that a tool can reliably reproduce your individual voice—or guarantee that readers or detectors will judge a passage as human. The most dependable approach is to give an assistant your own draft, set a narrow editing goal, and review every change yourself.

Choose an approach that fits how much control you want

AI writing tools handle voice-sensitive editing in different ways. The options below describe documented workflows, not an independent ranking of product quality. Feature access can vary by plan and product surface, so check the linked vendor documentation for current details.

Approach What you provide How revisions work Best fit
Personalized voice references or profiles A writing sample or an existing profile, depending on the feature. May offer rewriting in a selected style or voice; the exact controls vary by feature. Writers who want to reuse a style reference or profile while editing.
General-purpose assistant guided by a prompt Your draft or notes, the intended audience, and explicit constraints. You request a targeted revision and decide which suggestions to keep. Writers who want to specify precisely what should and should not change.
Grammar or clarity suggestions in place Text in the document or message being edited. Review individual suggestions and accept or reject them as you go. Writers who prefer local edits over replacing a whole passage.

Personalized voice references

Grammarly’s Humanizer guide describes adding a writing sample of at least 200 words as a style reference, as well as detailed suggestions. The guide lists access through Superhuman Go and Grammarly’s docs surface for Free, Pro, and Plus subscribers; it describes separate access for enterprise, business, and education users. A different voice-profile guide describes detecting a user’s style, maintaining different profiles for documents and messages, customizing some profile details, and applying “Rewrite in my voice” to selected text. That guide lists Windows, Mac, and Chrome availability. These are distinct feature descriptions, not evidence that every plan or surface includes every capability.

Prompt-guided revision

For a general-purpose assistant, the prompt is part of the editing control. OpenAI’s writing guidance recommends providing context and constraints, using raw material such as notes or an existing draft, and specifying the audience and format. Its voice-sensitive revision guidance recommends asking for a minimal edit as well as a stronger alternative, then requesting a change log. This gives you options to compare instead of treating a single rewrite as the final answer.

In-place suggestions

When an editor presents changes in context, you can inspect each suggestion against the sentence it affects. This can make it easier to keep your original wording where it works and accept only specific improvements. Do not assume, however, that an editing interface or a voice-related feature is available everywhere the product works; consult the relevant feature documentation before relying on it.

Use a bounded prompt instead of “make this better”

A broad request leaves the assistant to guess what “better” means. It may change your tone, rewrite more than you intended, or add material that was not in your draft. A narrow request gives you a clearer standard for judging the result.

  1. Start with your own material. Paste a draft, notes, or a representative sample rather than asking for a finished piece from a blank page.
  2. Name the reader and task. Say who the passage is for and identify one goal, such as clarifying the opening, shortening a paragraph, reducing repetition, or smoothing a transition.
  3. Set boundaries. Ask the assistant to preserve your meaning, examples, tone, and distinctive phrasing; tell it not to add facts. Request a minimal edit and a stronger option separately if you want to compare levels of change.
  4. Review against the original. Reject changes that flatten your voice or introduce claims you did not intend. If useful, ask for a change log so you can see what was altered.
  5. Verify facts and rules. Check factual claims yourself, especially numbers and policy details, and follow any school, employer, or publication requirements that apply.

For instance, instead of “Make this paragraph better,” try: “Clarify this paragraph for a first-time reader. Keep my meaning, examples, and conversational tone. Do not add facts or remove the phrase ‘[distinctive phrase]’. Show a minimal edit first, then a stronger revision, and list the main changes.” Replace the example phrase with wording that matters to you; put any variable or fill-in text inside quotation marks or code when using a template.

Keep authorship and judgment with the writer

A revision can be grammatically smooth and still be wrong for your piece. Compare it with your original and decide sentence by sentence what to accept, reject, or rewrite. Restore wording that sounds like you, and remove unsupported additions rather than assuming a polished passage is ready to publish.

OpenAI Academy’s May 18, 2026 guidance puts the boundary plainly: “If the revised paragraph no longer sounds like you, or if it introduces ideas you did not intend, ask ChatGPT to pull back.” That is advice for revising, not a guarantee that any response will match your voice. For academic work, OpenAI’s writing guide also says the final submission should reflect your own thinking and course policies.

Why “human-sounding” is not a detector score

Use “sounds human” to mean that the writing is clear, appropriate to its audience, and recognizably yours—not that a detector assigns it a particular score. Grammarly’s help article says AI detectors cannot reliably and conclusively determine whether AI was used, and recommends combining automatic detection with manual review. A detector result is therefore not proof of authorship or a substitute for reading the work.

Grammarly also documents an Authorship feature that tracks text sources and generates a report. Its Authorship documentation notes that attribution may be inconsistent—for example, with fast typing, text pasted from unsupported sources, or uncategorized AI tools. Treat the report as a record of some writing activity, not an infallible account of who authored every sentence.

What the available authenticity study can—and cannot—tell you

A 2024 study, “It was 80% me, 20% AI”: Seeking Authenticity in Co-Writing with Large Language Models, reported semi-structured interviews with 19 professional writers who co-wrote using personalized and non-personalized AI support, plus an online survey of 30 avid readers. The study’s authors reported positive reactions to personalization among writers, who wanted it to support growth beyond text production. Readers in this study showed less concern and could not distinguish the sampled AI-assisted work from participants’ solo-written work.

Those findings describe the study participants and setup. They are not population estimates, a controlled comparison of current commercial tools, or proof that any product can reproduce an individual’s voice.
