Use AI as a writing assistant, not as a substitute for reporting or editorial judgment. A reliable blog-post workflow moves from a clear reader goal and verified source material to an outline, a reviewed draft, fact-checking, and a final human review before publication.
1. Define the reader and the outcome
Before prompting an AI assistant, decide who the post is for, what question it will answer, and what readers should understand or do afterward. A specific assignment gives the tool useful boundaries and gives you a standard for judging its output.
- Reader: Who has this question, and what do they already know?
- Question: What should the post answer directly?
- Outcome: What should readers be able to decide or do after reading?
For example, “Explain how a first-time home gardener can choose a container for herbs” is more actionable than “Write about gardening.” OpenAI Academy recommends defining the assignment and audience, then clarifying what should happen after readers see the piece (OpenAI Academy’s writing guidance).
2. Gather source material before asking for prose
Collect the notes, first-party information, examples, and trustworthy references the article needs. Give that material to the assistant and tell it to distinguish facts in the sources from questions or gaps it cannot resolve. Asking a model to supply authoritative facts from memory risks plausible-sounding errors; Google warns that generative AI can produce inaccuracies (Google Search Central’s guidance on generative AI content).

- Use original documents, records, interviews, product documentation, or other primary sources when available.
- Keep source links beside the claims they support so a human can check them later.
- Flag missing evidence instead of inviting the model to fill gaps with guesses.
3. Choose a distinctive angle
Decide what the post will contribute beyond collecting or rephrasing information already available. That contribution might be an original explanation, analysis, reporting, examples drawn from your experience, or a useful way to organize a confusing topic. Google’s people-first guidance asks whether a page offers original information or analysis and substantial value beyond rewriting other sources (Google’s people-first content guidance).
Write the angle in one sentence before drafting. If you cannot say what a reader will get here that they would not get from a generic overview, narrow the topic or add a real editorial contribution.
4. Ask for an outline, not a full article
For a longer post, request a proposed structure first. Include the audience, goal, format, voice, length range if relevant, required source material, and anything the article must exclude. Ask the AI to show where each supplied source belongs and to mark claims that need confirmation.

OpenAI Academy recommends outlining longer pieces before drafting and giving constraints such as word count, reading level, and brand voice. An outline is easier to assess than a complete draft: you can spot missing reader questions, weak ordering, and unsupported sections before they become polished prose.
5. Review and repair the outline
Do not accept the first structure automatically. Check that it answers the reader’s question in a sensible order, gives the original angle room, and separates supported facts from assumptions. Remove headings that add no value and add any important question the outline missed.
- Does the opening answer the main question promptly?
- Does each section have a distinct job?
- Are factual sections supported by the supplied sources?
- Does the structure include the promised original explanation or analysis?

6. Draft one section at a time
Once the outline works, ask the AI to draft one section at a time using the relevant notes and sources. Specify the section’s purpose, intended reader, format, and voice. Focused prompts make it easier to correct a weak explanation or missing detail without regenerating the entire article.

OpenAI describes a general writing process as “Plan → Draft → Revise → Package” (OpenAI Academy); the staged approach keeps planning and revision visible instead of treating generated prose as finished work.
7. Verify claims, numbers, and citations
Check every material factual claim against its original source before publication. That includes dates, figures, quotations, names, technical instructions, and any claim about current policy or availability. A citation that looks plausible is not proof that the cited source says what the draft claims.

- Identify each claim readers may rely on.
- Open the original source and confirm the wording, context, and date.
- Correct, qualify, or remove claims the source does not establish.
- Check that quotations are exact and links lead to the cited material.
Google Search Central states: “It is critical to manually factcheck and review all AI-generated content for accuracy and trustworthiness before publishing” (Google’s generative AI content guidance). Also review search-facing metadata, structured data, and image alt text if the post includes them.

After fact-checking, edit for clarity, flow, tone, and length. Replace vague claims with concrete explanations, add relevant examples or expertise, and remove repetition and generic filler. Give the assistant focused revision instructions—for example, clarify a particular paragraph or shorten a section—then check the changes yourself.
Revision is also where the article’s original contribution should become unmistakable. Google’s people-first guidance emphasizes originality, accuracy, and usefulness; a smoother version of generic text is not a substitute for those qualities.

9. Prepare, review, and publish
Finish the publishing package, then read the complete page as a reader would. Create a specific title, excerpt, and meta description; check categories and tags; confirm links and page elements; and make sure the finished post still answers its original question. Learn WordPress describes AI assistance across drafting, editing, and pre-publication work, while noting that generated suggestions require editorial review (Learn WordPress: Building AI into Your Publishing Workflow).
- Keep a human responsible for the final accuracy and editorial decisions.
- Consider explaining AI’s role when readers would reasonably expect that context.
- For content created in part with the OpenAI API, OpenAI’s publication policy says to attribute it to the author or company, clearly disclose AI’s role, and retain human responsibility (OpenAI’s sharing and publication policy). Apply any relevant house, client, or jurisdiction-specific disclosure requirements as well.
Publishing volume alone is not a substitute for value: Google warns that producing many pages without adding value may violate its scaled-content-abuse policy. The editorial test is whether each post is useful, accurate, and original.
