Before starting, limit what the assistant can access, exclude sensitive files using the assistant’s own controls, keep credentials outside its reach, and put human review between an agent and consequential actions. No single privacy setting makes the whole workflow safe.
Can an AI coding assistant see your whole codebase?
Not necessarily, but do not assume it sees only the text you type. Depending on the product, feature, settings, and task, an assistant may use context from open files, project structure, terminal output, or other files it can access. That context can include credentials, personal data, proprietary logic, or internal architecture. OWASP describes these broader context risks in its Secure Coding with AI Cheat Sheet; GitHub also describes context and responsible-use considerations for Copilot Chat in GitHub.
The exact scope varies. A completion feature, a chat panel, and an agent that can inspect files or run commands may have different access. Check the current documentation and settings for the feature you use, including what is sent to a hosted service, what remains local, and whether terminal output or fetched content can become context. Do not infer behavior for one provider from another provider’s documentation.
Does .gitignore stop an assistant from reading .env?
No. .gitignore tells Git which untracked files to ignore; it is not an access-control rule for an AI assistant. A local tool may still be able to read an ignored file if its file access and context behavior allow it. OWASP specifically cautions against relying on .gitignore alone to keep files out of AI context.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Exclude files in the assistant’s own settings
Use the supported exclusion, ignore, or content-filtering mechanism for the assistant itself. Consider patterns for .env, .env.*, private keys, credential files, and sensitive directories. The feature name and scope differ by product, so follow that product’s current instructions and check whether exclusions apply to chat, completions, indexing, agents, or all of them.
Verify the rule with a harmless canary value or another controlled check, not with a real credential. Confirm that the tool does not include the canary when asked to inspect the relevant area, and understand what the check does not prove: one successful test does not establish that every feature, version, or context path honors the exclusion.

Keep credentials outside the project tree
Prefer environment variables, a vault, or an encrypted secret store rather than files in the repository or workspace. Where supported, use narrowly scoped, short-lived credentials. Do not paste tokens into prompts, source files, or terminals whose output the assistant can observe. Keeping a credential out of Git is useful, but does not by itself keep it out of local AI context. OWASP’s guidance covers secret storage and context handling together.
Before a session: approve the service and limit its reach
- Classify the repository. Identify whether it contains public, internal, confidential, regulated, customer, or otherwise restricted information. Check whether your organization permits that category of data in the exact assistant and deployment you plan to use.
- Check current terms and configuration. Read the provider’s documentation and your organization’s settings for data handling, retention, model improvement or training, context collection, exclusions, session logs, and sandboxing. These controls can differ by product, plan, organization, and region, and can change. For Copilot-specific controls, consult GitHub’s security and governance guidance; do not treat it as a description of other assistants.
- Set and verify assistant-specific exclusions. Exclude sensitive files and directories before opening an assistant session, then check the behavior with a harmless test as described above.
- Reduce available access. For an agent, consider a separate workspace or sandbox. Remove unrelated repositories and credentials from reach; restrict filesystem, network, and command access to what the task needs. For deployment decisions, the UK National Cyber Security Centre’s secure deployment guidance offers broader AI-system security principles, including segregation and protection of sensitive data.
If policy or contract terms do not clearly allow the proposed use, do not submit proprietary code until the appropriate security, legal, or organizational owner has resolved the question. A local or self-hosted option may be worth assessing for especially sensitive work, but hosting location alone does not establish that the full setup is safe; review its access, logging, model, network, and operational controls too.

During a session: minimize context and treat content as untrusted
- Provide only what the task needs. Avoid pasting secrets, customer records, unrelated files, or broad proprietary material merely for convenience. Narrow prompts and targeted file access reduce unnecessary exposure.
- Do not obey embedded instructions blindly. Repository files, issues, pull requests, README files, changelogs, webpages, terminal output, tool responses, and persistent instruction files can contain text that steers an agent. Treat that material as untrusted input. An instruction found there must not grant permission to disclose data, expand access, or perform unrelated actions. OWASP discusses this prompt-injection risk for coding workflows.
- Gate consequential actions. Require confirmation before publishing, pushing, deploying, changing access controls, installing an unreviewed dependency, or using credentials. Avoid broad auto-approval for commands or tools when a narrower permission is available.
- Keep secrets out of prompts and observable output. Do not ask an assistant to handle a real token or copy one into a terminal command it can inspect. If a task requires secret-dependent behavior, arrange a test using a non-production or synthetic value where possible.
After a session: review the work and check for exposure
- Inspect the diff and activity. Review the full change set and the commands actually run. Pay particular attention to tests, configuration, dependencies, CI workflows, permissions, and security-sensitive code.
- Run the project’s normal checks. Use the tests and security controls your team already relies on, and examine their findings. Generated tests and passing test output are not proof that a change is secure.
- Check session history when available. Look for accidental disclosure in logs or conversation history if the tool provides them. If a credential may have been exposed, revoke or rotate it promptly and follow your organization’s incident process.
- Record the approved setup. Document the tool, plan, configuration, and approval date so the team can recheck them when settings, provider behavior, or terms change.
GitHub says its cloud agent has safeguards that include CodeQL, dependency advisory checks, secret scanning, and session logs. Those are vendor-described mitigations, not a certification that every change is safe; see GitHub’s risks and mitigations for Copilot cloud agent. For Copilot Chat, GitHub likewise advises review and testing. Its product guidance puts the principle plainly: “Of course, you should always use GitHub Copilot together with good testing and code review practices and security tools, as well as your own judgment.” GitHub Copilot product guidance.

| What to assess | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Context access | Which files, open buffers, project indexes, terminal output, or fetched content can enter context for the feature being used? |
| Retention and model improvement | Under the exact plan, settings, and applicable terms, whether submitted data is retained or used to improve models, and for how long. |
| Administrative controls | Whether administrators can control exclusions, account access, feature availability, and policy enforcement. |
| Execution and isolation | Whether work runs locally or in the cloud, and how filesystem, network, and command access are restricted. |
| Credential exposure | Which credentials the assistant or agent can access, and whether permissions can be scoped or made temporary. |
| Visibility and response | What logs or session history are available, who can review them, and how the organization would investigate accidental disclosure. |
| Code safeguards | Which review, testing, secret-scanning, dependency, or static-analysis controls are available, and what they do not cover. |
| Legal and organizational fit | Whether the service and deployment meet contractual, regulatory, regional, and internal policy requirements for the code. |
For any Copilot-specific answer, use current GitHub documentation and the applicable agreement for your plan. For another provider, use that provider’s current documentation and contract. Marketing labels and defaults are not substitutes for checking the settings that govern the account and feature your team will actually use.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can you use an AI coding assistant with proprietary code?
Potentially, if the specific service and deployment are approved for that code and you have configured and reviewed the workflow appropriately. If the code’s classification, the provider’s data-handling terms, or your organization’s policy is unclear, treat it as not approved until the responsible owner clarifies. A hardware security key can strengthen developer account authentication, but it does not prevent an assistant from receiving source-code context.
