To send video from FFmpeg running in Docker to YouTube Live, create or select a stream in YouTube Studio, copy its server URL and stream key, then configure FFmpeg inside the container to publish to that endpoint. Docker does not change how YouTube credentials or FFmpeg output work; you still need to make the input available inside the container and keep the key private.

What you need before you start

  • A YouTube channel that is verified and eligible to live stream. YouTube says first-time live streaming may take up to 24 hours to activate, and the channel must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. Confirm availability in YouTube Studio before troubleshooting your encoder.
  • A video file or live input that FFmpeg can access from inside the container.
  • An FFmpeg build in the chosen container that supports the input, codecs, and output protocol you plan to use. The exact capabilities depend on the image.
  • The YouTube server URL and stream key for the stream you intend to use.

A stream key is a publishing credential. YouTube describes stream keys as a password and address that tell an encoder where to send a feed and let YouTube accept it. Treat the key as secret: do not put a real key in a public configuration, source repository, screenshot, or log.

Create or select a YouTube Live stream

  1. Open YouTube Studio and choose Create → Go Live.
  2. In Live Control Room, use the Stream tab to create a stream or select a scheduled stream. Reusing stream settings may also reuse a previous key, so check which stream and key are selected.
  3. Copy the stream’s server URL and stream key. The URL is the ingestion endpoint; the key identifies your publishing credential. Depending on the FFmpeg client setup, these may be entered separately or combined as STREAM_URL/STREAM_KEY.
  4. Keep the stream private or unlisted while testing if you do not intend to broadcast a public event. For a scheduled stream, use its preview and Go Live workflow as appropriate.

Make the input available to the container

Dockerized FFmpeg can read only inputs it can access from within its container. For a file, the path in the FFmpeg command must be the path as seen inside the container, not merely its location on the host. For a camera, capture device, or remote input, the chosen deployment must provide the container access to that source.

Mounts, device permissions, and secret delivery vary by Docker image and deployment. There is no universal docker run or Compose command that can be safely prescribed without knowing those details. Configure the container using the documentation for your specific image or deployment, and avoid embedding a real stream key in a public image or checked-in configuration.

Publish with FFmpeg from inside the container

For a video file, the following is an illustrative command shape to run in the container. Set the variables through a secret-safe method appropriate to your deployment; do not replace them with a real key in a command you may save or share.

ffmpeg -re -i /media/input.mp4 -c:v libx264 -c:a aac -f flv "$YOUTUBE_INGEST_URL/$YOUTUBE_STREAM_KEY"

/media/input.mp4 must exist inside the container. The example uses -re to read a file at its native rate, H.264 video and AAC audio encoding, and FLV output for RTMP-style publishing. It is a pattern, not a tested command for every image or input: confirm your FFmpeg build has the needed codecs and protocol support, and adapt settings to the source and YouTube’s current encoder requirements. If your client accepts the server URL and key as separate fields, enter them separately rather than combining them.

Choose the endpoint YouTube gives you

Use the ordinary RTMP server URL if that is what Live Control Room provides. If you choose RTMPS, use the RTMPS URL explicitly; YouTube specifies TLS/SSL on port 443 for RTMPS. FFmpeg documents RTMPS as encrypted RTMP. Do not change an RTMP address into an RTMPS address by guessing: use the endpoint supplied for the stream.

File input and live input are different

The example above is for a file. A live camera or other source needs an input option that matches that source and can be opened from within the container. The required device access and FFmpeg input syntax depend on the hardware and image, so verify those details for your deployment rather than assuming a file command will work unchanged.

Test the preview before going live

  1. Start FFmpeg and check its output for input-opening errors, codec or protocol errors, and connection failures. Do not share logs until you have removed any credentials they might contain.
  2. Wait for the feed to appear in the Live Control Room preview. Check that both picture and audio are present and that the event is configured for the audience you intend.
  3. Test in advance and monitor the stream’s audio and video quality. YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom beyond the stream bitrate. A simultaneous primary and backup feed needs additional capacity.
  4. Use the Live Control Room workflow to start the event when ready. Stop FFmpeg when you want to end transmission, following the stream workflow shown in Studio.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume the same archive behavior for streams longer than 12 hours.

Protect and rotate the stream key

If you suspect a key has been exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder with the new key. YouTube says only channel owners or managers can reset stream keys. A reset invalidates the old credential, so update any active encoder configuration that uses it.

Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check
YouTube does not show an incoming feed Wrong server URL or key, an endpoint mismatch, or FFmpeg cannot reach the ingestion server. Compare the URL and key with the selected stream in Live Control Room. Use the exact RTMP or RTMPS endpoint shown there, and check container network access.
FFmpeg says it cannot open the input The input path is on the host but not visible at that path inside the container, or the source is inaccessible. Check the path from inside the container and confirm the file or live source is actually available to that deployment.
Video arrives but audio is missing or wrong The source may have no audio track, or the chosen input/encoding configuration may not handle it as expected. Inspect the input streams and FFmpeg output, then adjust the command for the actual source and verify audio in the YouTube preview.
Live streaming is unavailable in Studio The channel may not meet YouTube’s eligibility requirements, or first-time activation may still be processing. Confirm verification and restriction status in YouTube Studio. YouTube says initial activation can take up to 24 hours.
Feed disconnects or quality degrades Network capacity, source stability, or encoder behavior may be insufficient. Check FFmpeg and container network stability, test the source, and preserve YouTube’s recommended 20% upload-bandwidth headroom. Reserve extra capacity for a backup feed if sending one.
A key appears in a log, screenshot, or repository The publishing credential may be exposed. Reset the key in Live Control Room, then update the encoder. Restrict access to configuration and logs going forward.

Use video you have the right to stream

A working stream key only authorizes the encoder to send a feed; it does not grant rights to the video’s music, footage, or other material. Use content you own or are authorized to broadcast, and check YouTube’s current copyright and live-stream requirements before streaming. A successful preview does not establish that content is cleared for broadcast.
