To keep an internet radio station live on YouTube, create or select a stream in YouTube Studio, copy its stream URL and stream key into an encoder, then start the encoder and confirm the feed in Live Control Room. The key is a credential—not an audio source or a radio automation system—so a continuous broadcast also needs a program source and encoder that keep running. For a computer-free option, StreamNeo plays uploaded videos from the cloud to YouTube; it does not transmit a live microphone or camera feed.
What a YouTube stream key does
The stream URL tells an encoder where to send your feed; the stream key lets YouTube accept it. YouTube describes stream keys as being like a stream’s “password and address.” Treat the key as a secret. It does not generate music, mix a station, or keep an encoder running.
An internet radio broadcast therefore has at least two working parts: a source that produces the program feed and an encoder that sends it to YouTube. YouTube documents software encoders running on computers and standalone hardware encoders, but does not prescribe a radio automation application or a universal computer specification.

Check that the channel can go live
YouTube Help says the channel must be verified and must have had no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. Enabling live streaming for the first time can take up to 24 hours, so complete this step before the planned launch. See YouTube’s live-streaming enablement guidance.

Choose how you will generate and send the feed
Decide whether your station’s program source and encoder will run as software on a computer or use a standalone hardware encoder. The choice depends on the automation you need, equipment you already have, and whether the selected system supports your intended feed. For an always-on setup, both the program source and encoder must remain operational; YouTube does not guarantee uninterrupted service for a particular setup.
Prepare the stream and rights
Decide whether the broadcast should be public, unlisted, or private, and whether you need a complete recording of the program. Confirm that you have the rights required for the music and other content you plan to broadcast. YouTube’s platform guidance does not establish what rights apply to a particular station or territory. Live content must also comply with YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service.

Connect an encoder using the stream key
- Open YouTube Studio and Live Control Room. Create a stream or select the scheduled stream you intend to use. Choose its privacy setting: public, private, or unlisted. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions describe the control-room workflow.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key. In the stream settings, copy both values. Keep the key private; anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to the associated stream.
- Enter both values in your encoder. Paste the stream URL into the encoder’s server or URL field and the stream key into its key field. Labels vary among encoders. Do not paste the key into a public document, chat, or screen recording.
- Set the encoder’s output to match the feed and connection. Choose the format, resolution, and bitrate your encoder supports and your upload connection can sustain. Test the actual station setup rather than assuming a nominal internet speed is enough. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts data into and through Google’s servers. Follow its current live encoder settings and stream-health guidance; the appropriate values depend on the chosen encoder and feed.
- Start sending the feed and check the preview. Start the encoder, then verify that Live Control Room receives the feed and reports healthy stream status. YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health during the broadcast.
- Use the Go live control if the stream requires it. Depending on the stream configuration, you may need to select Go live in Live Control Room. Auto-start and auto-stop settings affect whether a separate manual start or stop is needed. Check the setting for the stream you created instead of assuming every stream behaves the same way.
- Keep the program source and encoder running. For a continuous station, both must remain on and connected. If either stops producing or sending the feed, the broadcast can stop even though the stream key itself is unchanged.
Choose the operating setup that fits your station
| Decision | What to consider |
|---|---|
| Software encoder or hardware encoder | YouTube documents both categories. Choose based on the station automation, equipment, support for the intended feed, and ability to run continuously; no universal machine specification is established by YouTube’s guidance. |
| Manual or automatic start and stop | YouTube offers auto-start and auto-stop settings. These determine whether you need to use Live Control Room controls for each start or stop. |
| Stream quality and upload capacity | Test the connection during the intended workload and choose encoder settings it can sustain. Monitor stream health while live. |
| Continuous availability and recordings | Streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived. Do not rely on one automatic archive for a continuous broadcast exceeding 12 hours; arrange an independent recording workflow if you need a complete recording. |
Protect the key and understand YouTube’s limits
Keep the credential private and rotate it if exposed
If you think the key has been compromised, reset it in Live Control Room. YouTube says an owner or manager can reset a stream key. Replace the old value in the encoder with the new key before sending the feed again. See YouTube’s stream-settings guidance.
Account for concurrent streams
YouTube currently documents a limit of up to 10 active streams per channel and up to 3 active streams per stream key; both limits apply. If a station operates multiple feeds, plan the channel and key assignments within those limits. See YouTube’s live-streaming guidance.

Common problems and fixes
The encoder cannot connect
- Check that the channel is eligible for live streaming and that first-time enablement has completed.
- Confirm that the encoder has the matching stream URL and current key, with no missing characters or accidental spaces.
- Check that the encoder is sending to the stream selected in Live Control Room and that the network permits the connection.
The stream appears in the control room but is not live to viewers
Check the preview and stream health first. Then look at the stream’s auto-start configuration and use Go live in Live Control Room if required. A received feed and a publicly live broadcast are not always the same step.
The broadcast drops or becomes unstable
Monitor stream health, verify that both the program source and encoder remain running, and test the upload connection under the station’s real workload. Reduce the encoder’s quality or bitrate if the connection cannot sustain the current output, then confirm the revised feed in the control room. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted delivery.

- 【HDMI LOOP-OUT】Based on the high-speed USB 3.0 technology, it can capture one single channel HD HDMI video signal. There is no delay when you are playing game live.
- 【Support Mic-in for Commentary】Rybozen capture card has microphone input and you can use it to add external commentary when playing a game. Please note: it only accepts 3.5mm TRS standard microphone headset.
The key may have been shared or exposed
Reset it in Live Control Room, then update the encoder with the replacement key. Treat the old key as unsafe once exposed.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →A long broadcast is missing from the archive
YouTube’s automatic archive guidance covers streams under 12 hours; it does not promise a single automatic archive for a longer continuous run. Use an independent recording workflow when a complete long-form archive matters.
