In YouTube Studio, schedule or select the service in Live Control Room, copy its server URL and key into the encoder, check the incoming preview, then click Go live when you are ready. For a recurring service, you can reuse prior stream settings, including the key, but check each event’s details before sharing its watch page.
Before setting up the first service
Confirm that the channel is eligible to stream before planning a broadcast. YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days. First-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it well ahead of the first service. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
You will also need a video and audio source, an encoder (software or hardware), and an internet connection capable of sustaining the selected stream settings. YouTube supports software encoding and recommends professional-grade hardware encoders for higher-production-value events; the right choice depends on your existing equipment, inputs, operator experience, and reliability needs. Schedule a recurring sermon broadcast
- Open Live Control Room. In YouTube Studio, select Create and then Go live. Open the Manage tab and choose Schedule stream.
- Create the event or reuse prior settings. Reusing settings copies the previous stream’s metadata, settings, and stream key. Before sharing the new event, check its title, date and time, privacy, description, and other details. A scheduled stream may appear to subscribers as upcoming, and viewers can choose a reminder.
- Keep the scheduled event handy. Confirm that the encoder will connect to the intended event, not an older or different stream. The key may be reused, but the event and its public-facing details still need review.
These controls and reuse behavior are documented in YouTube’s live-stream setup instructions. Interface labels can change; if they differ in your Studio view, look for the Live Control Room’s stream-management and scheduling controls.

Find the stream key and enter it in the encoder
YouTube describes a stream key as similar to a stream’s password and address. Treat it as a credential: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your stream. Keep it within the trusted production team and never show it in a public screen share, livestream, or screenshot.
- In Live Control Room, open the Stream tab and create or select the stream associated with the scheduled service.
- Copy the YouTube server URL and stream key shown for that stream.
- Open your encoder’s stream or destination settings. Select YouTube if the encoder offers it. Otherwise, paste the server URL into the server or RTMP server field and the key into the Stream Key field.
- Save the settings, but keep the key concealed from anyone who does not need it.
Use the server URL YouTube displays rather than assuming one from a previous setup. The encoder needs both that destination address and the matching key to send the feed correctly.

Choose settings your connection can sustain
YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. Its recommended bitrate varies with codec, resolution, and frame rate. For H.264, YouTube lists 14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps; these are platform recommendations, not measurements of your church’s connection. Check YouTube’s current encoder recommendations for other combinations.
Higher resolution and frame rate require more upload capacity. Choose a setting that your actual connection can sustain, test the upload bitrate, and watch stream health in Live Control Room. A theoretically higher-quality setting is not useful if the connection cannot deliver it reliably.

Test before the congregation arrives
YouTube recommends configuring the encoder at least two hours before the event and starting it at least 15 minutes before the scheduled time. These are YouTube’s preparation recommendations, not guarantees that a particular setup will work.
- Run a representative test with audio and movement similar to the service: speech, music, camera changes, and any other elements your production uses.
- Start the encoder and confirm that the feed appears in Live Control Room’s preview.
- Check audio levels and picture quality, and inspect stream health for warnings.
- Open the watch page and verify that it is available with the intended privacy setting. Check from a phone or another device as well.
- If you use a backup encoder, confirm that your team knows how to switch over. YouTube’s reliability tips also include checking the local recording or archive.

Go live and end the service cleanly
- Start sending the encoder feed early enough to review the Live Control Room preview.
- When the preview is correct and you are ready for viewers, click Go live in Live Control Room.
- At the end of the service, click End Stream in Live Control Room, then stop sending the encoder feed.
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. Confirm that the resulting archive is available and usable if your church plans to keep or share it. Eligibility and archive details are in YouTube’s live-streaming help.

Use a custom stream key if your production needs a reusable setup, and limit access to the people who operate the broadcast. If the key is exposed or you suspect someone else has it, reset it in Live Control Room, then replace the old value in the encoder before the next service. YouTube says only channel owners or managers can reset a key.

After a reset, test the updated encoder connection before the event. An encoder still configured with the old key will not authenticate with the replacement. See YouTube’s instructions for managing stream settings and keys.
Equipment: what is and is not required
A stream key is part of the connection workflow, not a reason by itself to buy new equipment. Your needs depend on the cameras, audio routing, and encoder you already use. Some camera and encoder setups connect directly; a USB HDMI capture card is only a possible requirement when a camera outputs HDMI and a computer-based encoder needs a separate capture input. Before buying one, check the camera output, computer ports, capture-card compatibility, and encoder software support.
