Use a YouTube livestream as your channel’s ongoing radio feed and a Premiere as a scheduled, shared viewing event for a particular program. You can send viewers from an ended livestream to a Premiere with YouTube Live Redirect, but a Premiere is not a 24/7 loop. For the radio feed, create an encoder livestream; plan for YouTube’s archive and DVR limits on sessions longer than 12 hours, and clear music rights before broadcasting.

What a Premiere does—and what it does not do

A Premiere is a scheduled upload that viewers watch together when playback begins. Its public watch page is available ahead of time, so viewers can share it, set reminders, comment, and chat. Afterward, the video remains on your channel as a regular upload. It works well for a station launch, a new mix, a guest set, a seasonal lineup, or a recorded special that benefits from an appointment and shared chat. It is not a continuous broadcast or a way to loop a video around the clock. YouTube’s Premiere guide describes the format and setup.

Shorts cannot be Premieres, and Premiere output above 1080p is not supported. Scheduling at least 24 hours ahead gives viewers around the world an opportunity to see the thumbnail in their subscriptions feed. A reminder triggers a notification about 30 minutes before the start and another when it begins. These are reasons to schedule a special program separately from the channel’s always-on radio feed.

Set up the radio feed as an encoder livestream

  1. Create or schedule the stream: In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create a livestream. Schedule it if you want advance promotion and reminders. Use a private or unlisted test first if you need to check the complete path without a public launch.
  2. Connect the encoder: Copy the stream URL and stream key from Live Control Room into your software or hardware encoder. The key controls access to the stream; treat it like a password and do not publish it or share it in public chat. YouTube supports encoder-based streaming and documents the workflow in its encoder livestream guide.
  3. Choose transport: You can use the RTMPS URL shown in Live Control Room for encrypted RTMP transport. Configure the encoder with that URL and the stream key. YouTube’s RTMPS guidance explains the encrypted option.
  4. Preview and verify: Check the video and audio in Live Control Room before going public. Open the watch page and test playback, including on a phone. Confirm that the intended stream is public and that the audio remains audible and stable over time.
  5. Prepare for continuity: YouTube advises preparing the encoder in advance, leaving upload-bandwidth headroom, monitoring stream quality, and testing any backup or failover you have configured. A test does not guarantee that a long-running stream will avoid power, network, encoder, or platform interruptions.

YouTube’s encoder documentation says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; streams over 12 hours may not be captured at all. If a complete replay matters, make a local recording rather than relying on YouTube’s archive alone.

Send viewers from the livestream to a Premiere

  1. Set up the Premiere first: Upload the finished video in YouTube Studio, set its visibility to public, schedule its date and time, select “Set as Premiere,” and configure the countdown. The Premiere needs to exist before you choose it as the livestream’s redirect destination.
  2. Set the redirect on the livestream: In YouTube Studio’s Live content settings, edit the livestream’s customization or redirect setting and select the Premiere as its destination. Labels and placement can change as YouTube updates Studio.
  3. Explain the handoff: Tell listeners when the feed will end and where it will take them. When the stream ends, viewers are sent to the selected Premiere; allow a few seconds for the player to reload.

YouTube currently lists more than 1,000 subscribers and no Community Guidelines strikes as eligibility requirements for a creator sending a Live Redirect. Check YouTube’s Live Redirect instructions for current eligibility and settings.

A practical programming pattern is to keep the radio livestream as the regular listening destination and use a scheduled Premiere for a special program or launch. Promote the Premiere watch page in the channel description, community posts, livestream description, and pinned chat. Do not describe the Premiere as a 24/7 feed: it is a scheduled video experience.

Plan sessions around archive and rewind limits

YouTube says livestreams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. DVR, which lets viewers pause and rewind during a livestream, may also be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. For a continuous radio channel, that means a single all-day session is a poor choice when a complete platform replay or reliable rewind is important. See YouTube’s DVR guidance and its encoder guidance.

If replay and rewind matter, consider ending and restarting planned sessions before the 12-hour threshold and record locally for a separate archive. Shorter planned sessions require transition planning and enough local recording capacity; they do not guarantee that every interruption or platform issue is avoided. YouTube recommends keeping a local archive backup.

Clear the music rights before going live

YouTube’s livestream terms require the channel operator to have all necessary rights for worldwide exploitation on Google services, including relevant music licensing rights from artists, labels, publishers—including public-performance rights—and other royalty participants. The terms are at YouTube’s livestream terms and conditions.

YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. A match may cause a placeholder to replace the broadcast; if the matched content continues, YouTube may interrupt or terminate the stream. A license alone may not prevent an interruption if the content owner has not allowlisted the channel. Archived streams can also receive Content ID claims after the broadcast. Read YouTube’s live-streaming restrictions guidance before relying on a track in a live or archived program.

Choose a setup that fits your operating needs

Approach Best fit Trade-offs
Software encoder on a computer A creator who already has a capable computer and wants a lower-cost setup. The computer’s uptime, updates, heat, and local network become your responsibility. YouTube supports software encoders but does not endorse a particular setup in its guidance.
Dedicated hardware encoder A purpose-built broadcast installation or production setup whose benefits justify dedicated equipment. Cost and device-specific compatibility need consideration. Check inputs, output options, monitoring, and recovery plans; YouTube does not say a particular model is required.
One stream lasting a day or longer An operator who prioritizes one continuous session. Archive capture and DVR may be limited beyond 12 hours, so this is a poor fit if a complete replay is essential.
Planned shorter sessions plus local recording An operator who values replay and a separate recovery copy. Requires transition planning and recording storage. YouTube recommends a local archive backup.
