A UPS can keep a PC and the other equipment plugged into its battery-backed outlets powered during a mains outage—but it cannot by itself guarantee that a 24/7 YouTube stream stays live. To choose one, measure the equipment’s actual watt draw, check the UPS’s watt and VA limits, and match its runtime chart to the outage you need to cover. A conventional desktop UPS is generally for brief interruptions or a safe shutdown, not automatically an all-night or all-day power source.

What a UPS can—and cannot—keep running

A UPS supplies temporary power to connected equipment when mains power fails. If the PC, monitor, and router or modem all need to remain on, all must be accounted for; a battery-backed outlet can power only the devices connected to it, within the UPS’s limits.

That covers only the power side of streaming. A UPS does not guarantee that your internet service remains available, that a backup WAN connection works, or that YouTube will maintain or restore a particular broadcast. Those outcomes depend on the network and streaming setup as well as power.

Size the UPS for the equipment, not the PC’s PSU label

Measure the load you need to protect

List the PC, monitor, router or modem, network switch, and any other equipment that must stay on. Use actual or credible operating watt figures for each item and add them together. A PC power supply’s rated maximum is not a measurement of the computer’s continuous consumption. No cited source measures your specific computer, so use your own equipment’s draw rather than treating a general example as your load.

Check both watts and VA

After totaling the load in watts, choose a UPS with sufficient output watt capacity and suitable headroom. Schneider Electric India recommends output watt capacity 20–30% above the connected load. Schneider Electric’s U.S. guide says, “When sizing a UPS, ensure output watt capacity is 20–25% above load.” These are manufacturer sizing recommendations, not a universal guarantee of performance. Check the exact UPS model’s maximum watt and VA ratings; satisfying one limit does not mean the other is also satisfied.

Choose runtime and UPS type for your outage goal

Decide what the battery must accomplish

Separate capacity from runtime: output capacity determines whether the UPS can support the connected load, while runtime depends on battery capacity and that load. Schneider Electric India describes typical basic-unit runtime as 5–20 minutes, depending on model and load. This is broad category guidance, not a runtime promise for a particular UPS or setup. More connected equipment reduces available runtime.

APC BX1500M UPS Battery Backup & Surge Protector for Computers, Electronics
  • 1500VA / 900W RELIABLE BACKUP POWER: The highest VA capacity available for home use; delivers short-term battery power to keep essential devices powered during blackouts, surges, and unexpected power interruptions
  • TEN PROTECTED OUTLETS: Power your entire setup with 5 battery backup outlets for essential devices, and 5 surge-only outlets for peripherals. Plus built-in coaxial and Ethernet surge protection for added peace of mind
  • AUTOMATIC VOLTAGE REGULATION (AVR): Corrects low voltage brownouts (88V+) and surges (+/-13%) without draining battery. Boosts or trims to stable 120V. Extends runtime for blackouts; Active PFC compatible for gaming PCs
  • REPLACEABLE BATTERY & ENERGY STAR UPS: User-replaceable battery (APCRBC124, sold separately) for zero-downtime swaps. ENERGY STAR certified for 92%+ efficiency, cutting energy costs vs standard UPS units
  • LCD DISPLAY PANEL: Features an intuitive LCD screen that displays real-time status information including battery charge level, estimated runtime, load capacity, and input voltage for easy monitoring of your power protection system

Decide whether you want to ride through brief flickers, stay online through a known short outage, or shut down cleanly if an outage lasts longer. Compare the manufacturer’s runtime chart at your expected load rather than relying on a VA label alone. If you need extended operation, look for a model expressly supporting the required external battery configuration or another suitable backup arrangement, and verify model-specific runtime data.

Compare topology and output features

Schneider Electric says line-interactive models are usually sufficient for home and office use. Online double-conversion models continuously supply the load through their inverter for situations requiring greater isolation from grid fluctuations. Consider topology alongside AVR, transfer behavior, battery output waveform, and the connected equipment’s needs. The general guidance here does not establish what a particular PC power supply requires.

Install and test the backup

  1. Inventory the essential load. Record the PC, display, router or modem, and other devices that must remain powered. Get each device’s operating watt draw where possible and total it.
  2. Match the UPS ratings. Apply the manufacturer headroom guidance, then verify both the unit’s watt and VA limits against the planned load.
  3. Check runtime at that load. Use the exact model’s runtime chart and decide whether the target is a brief bridge, continued streaming through a short cut, or a controlled shutdown.
  4. Verify compatibility and battery options. Check the exact model’s topology, AVR, waveform, replacement-battery specification, and supported external battery modules. Battery and module compatibility are model-specific.
  5. Connect only essential equipment to battery-backed outlets. Confirm which outlets have battery backup on the exact unit. Include the router or modem if connectivity is part of the plan; avoid placing nonessential devices on battery if they reduce useful runtime.
  6. Test the procedure under controlled conditions. After installation, confirm that the intended equipment remains powered and that you can carry out your planned shutdown or backup procedure. Do not assume a successful power test proves your ISP connection or YouTube broadcast will remain live.
  7. Maintain the battery. Use only a replacement specified for the exact UPS model, and re-check the manufacturer’s guidance for any external battery configuration.

Buying a UPS in India

Schneider Electric India’s store listed India-market options including the APC Back-UPS BX1100I-IN, APC Back-UPS Pro units, battery-less inverter/UPS configurations, and online UPS models when its page was accessed in 2026. A listing establishes availability on the store at that time, not current stock, price, suitability, or runtime for your equipment. The BX1100I-IN is an example of a locally listed desktop UPS, not a blanket recommendation: check its current specification and runtime chart against your load before buying.

An APC-branded India retailer article dated June 14, 2026 illustrates totaling a desktop, display, router, and NAS, applying headroom, and then considering runtime. Its device loads and UPS classes are examples from that retailer, not measurements of your setup. When comparing India-market models, check continuous watts and VA, runtime at your expected load, topology and transfer behavior, AVR and output waveform, battery replacement or supported external packs, and local outlets, service, warranty, and availability.
