To keep a home-PC YouTube lofi stream running through a power interruption, size a UPS from the actual power draw of the PC and any networking equipment that must stay on. Check both the UPS’s watt and VA limits, then use its runtime chart at your measured load. A UPS can bridge a short outage or give the PC time to shut down cleanly; it cannot guarantee a continuous stream through a long outage, an ISP failure, or a PC or encoder problem.

What size UPS do I need for my PC?

There is no reliable one-size-fits-all VA rating for a streaming PC. The right UPS depends on the equipment you want powered and its real draw while the stream is running. CPU and GPU component ratings alone do not tell you the complete system’s wall draw.

  1. Measure the load. Measure the PC while it is encoding, using a suitable power meter or a trustworthy wall-power measurement. Add the draw of the modem, router, external storage, and monitor if you intend to keep them on battery.
  2. Choose your outage goal. Decide whether you need only to ride through brief flickers, continue for a short outage, or keep the PC up long enough for an automatic graceful shutdown. Do not assume a compact desktop UPS can power a broadcast through an extended outage.
  3. Check both output ratings. Your total connected load must fit within the UPS’s watt and VA limits. APC’s buying guide recommends UPS output-watt capacity generally be 20–25% above the attached equipment’s draw; treat that as manufacturer guidance, not a substitute for checking your chosen model’s limits and runtime chart. APC UPS Buying Guide.
  4. Check runtime at your load. Look up the exact model’s runtime chart using your measured load and the outage duration you chose. Runtime depends on the load and battery condition; the VA number by itself does not tell you how long the UPS will run. More connected equipment means less runtime.

How long will a UPS run my computer?

Use the runtime chart for the exact UPS model at the combined measured load—not a general estimate based on the UPS’s VA rating. A PC drawing more power while encoding, or adding the monitor and networking equipment to battery outlets, reduces the available runtime. Battery age and condition also matter. APC says most of its VRLA UPS batteries should last three to five years, subject to temperature, discharge history, and load; this is APC guidance, not a guarantee for every battery or UPS. APC battery life guidance.

When comparing UPS models, use the same load for each runtime chart and verify that the stated runtime covers your goal with enough margin for shutdown. Manufacturer estimates and your real conditions may differ, so configure monitoring and test the complete setup rather than treating a chart as a promise.

Which equipment should go on battery-backed outlets?

Prioritize the equipment that must remain powered for the stream to continue: usually the PC and the modem/router. A powered router cannot maintain internet service if the ISP connection itself fails, but leaving essential network equipment off the UPS can make a household power interruption drop the stream even while the PC stays on.

  • PC: connect it to a battery-backed outlet.
  • Modem and router: connect them to battery-backed outlets if you need the network to remain available during an outage.
  • Monitor: include it only if someone needs to interact with the computer during the outage and the added draw fits your runtime goal.
  • Noncritical peripherals: leave them off battery-backed outlets. If your UPS has surge-only outlets, those can be used for equipment that needs surge protection but not battery power.

Check the battery-backed outlet count and plug type before buying. Do not put a laser printer, heater, or other high-draw noncritical device on the battery load without checking the UPS documentation and capacity. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for placement, ventilation, grounding, first charge, and load limits.

What UPS features matter for a streaming PC?

  • Waveform and PSU compatibility: APC describes pure sine-wave output as offering the highest degree of compatibility for active-PFC servers and sensitive electronics. Check your PC power supply and the exact UPS specifications rather than assuming every combination is suitable.
  • Monitoring and shutdown: Check whether the model offers USB or network monitoring and whether its supported shutdown software works with your operating system. Features and menus vary by UPS model and OS.
  • Battery replacement: Confirm whether the battery is user-replaceable and that the correct replacement cartridge is available for the exact UPS model. Do not substitute a generic battery.
  • Local fit: Verify warranty, local plug and voltage compatibility, noise, and where the UPS can be safely placed.

For a PC backup, choose a UPS battery backup based on measured load, both output ratings, and model-specific runtime—not on a product’s VA label alone.

How to connect and configure the UPS

  1. Connect only the chosen essentials. Plug the PC and the modem/router into battery-backed outlets if both need to stay on. Add the monitor only if needed and if its draw still meets the runtime objective.
  2. Install supported monitoring software. Use the UPS maker’s software or supported management connection, and verify compatibility with your computer’s operating system.
  3. Set a graceful-shutdown trigger. Configure shutdown for a low-battery or runtime threshold that leaves enough time for the operating system and stream software to close normally. Decide how the stream should be restarted after power returns; exact options depend on the UPS, OS, and streaming software.
  4. Test the whole setup safely. During stable conditions, save work and perform a brief controlled interruption following the UPS manual. Check that the PC stays on, the modem/router remain powered, alerts work, and you understand how the encoder reconnects. Confirm that shutdown happens before the battery is exhausted. Do not repeatedly deep-discharge the battery as a test.
  5. Maintain and review it. Keep vents clear, follow the maker’s environmental guidance, respond to self-test or battery alerts, and periodically check runtime estimates. APC advises against frequent runtime calibration and says one or two calibrations per year at most if needed. Use only the compatible replacement battery for the exact model.

Will a UPS keep my YouTube stream live during a power outage?

Only if the outage is within the UPS’s available runtime and the rest of the streaming path remains healthy. A UPS can keep powered equipment running temporarily, but it does not provide internet service during an ISP outage, fix a failed PC or encoder, or supply unlimited power through a long blackout. For that reason, size around a stated ride-through or shutdown goal rather than treating the UPS as a guarantee of uninterrupted broadcasting.

Network stability matters even when the PC and router have power. YouTube says a network disruption can break a stream and recommends leaving 20% upload headroom above the total stream bitrate. YouTube live encoder settings and network guidance. YouTube also advises testing encoder setup and failover and monitoring stream health: YouTube streaming tips.

Troubleshooting a stream that drops on UPS power

  • The UPS overloads or alarms: compare the connected load with both watt and VA ratings. Remove noncritical devices from battery outlets and recalculate using the PC’s actual streaming draw.
  • The PC stays on but the stream disconnects: check whether the modem and router are also on battery, then check YouTube stream health and the internet connection. Battery power cannot prevent an ISP disruption.
  • The PC shuts down sooner than expected: compare current load with the exact UPS model’s runtime chart, check battery alerts and age, and reassess whether the monitor or peripherals need battery power.
  • The PC or encoder does not recover after power returns: verify the configured shutdown and restart behavior, then test encoder reconnect behavior during a controlled rehearsal. Restart settings vary by operating system and streaming software.
  • The battery needs replacement: identify the exact UPS model and obtain its compatible cartridge. APC provides a battery selector for matching replacement parts: APC battery replacement selector.
