SDKs are provider-specific: a Scrapfly client and a Crawlbase client do not share method names, authentication models, or response shapes.
This guide shows the documented integration patterns for Scrapfly and Crawlbase. The examples reflect those providers’ documentation, not independently executed tests; check the current package version and reference before deploying.
Choose an API and its SDK before writing the integration
A scraping SDK is a language-specific client for a provider’s web API. It can simplify authentication and request construction, but it does not make different providers’ interfaces interchangeable. First decide what the job needs: a static page fetch, JavaScript rendering, structured extraction, a crawl across many pages, or asynchronous delivery.
- Check the provider’s current TypeScript or Node.js support, package distribution, and supported runtime.
- Confirm how credentials are supplied and whether the provider offers separate access modes for static and rendered pages.
- Determine whether results are raw HTML, text, structured data, a wrapper object, or a job ID.
- Look for target-page status reporting, documented error handling, concurrency limits, callbacks, pricing, and data-retention terms.
- Confirm that your intended access complies with the target site’s terms and applicable rules. An SDK does not establish permission to collect data.
The examples below are useful provider-specific starting points, not a neutral or exhaustive market comparison. Scrapfly’s repository lists npm, JSR, and Deno distribution. Crawlbase documents a Node package with ESM and CommonJS use. Scrapeless also lists a JavaScript/Node.js package in its SDK overview; consult its language guide to verify TypeScript compatibility and current method details before implementing it.

Install the package and configure credentials
Crawlbase
Crawlbase documents this installation command:
npm install crawlbase
Its Node SDK documentation specifies Node.js 16 or later for that SDK. Treat this as a Crawlbase requirement, not a general requirement for TypeScript scraping clients. The documentation describes the SDK as “a thin wrapper around the same HTTP API documented in API Reference.” See the Crawlbase Node.js SDK documentation for its current import forms and API details.
Scrapfly
The Scrapfly SDK repository describes a TypeScript/JavaScript SDK distributed through npm, JSR, and Deno. Use the install command and package manager for the distribution you select, and verify the installed version’s exports and option names in the current repository. The source material here does not establish one universal installation command for every distribution.
Keep keys server-side
Store the API key or token in server-side environment configuration or a secrets manager. Do not commit it to source control, expose it in browser-delivered JavaScript, or write it to logs. For example, your application can load a secret as process.env.CRAWLBASE_TOKEN; configure that environment variable in your deployment platform rather than hard-coding a real token in the source file.
Make a first request with the chosen SDK
Crawlbase: request a page and inspect the response
import { CrawlingAPI } from 'crawlbase';
const token = process.env.CRAWLBASE_TOKEN;
if (!token) throw new Error('Set CRAWLBASE_TOKEN in the server environment');
const api = new CrawlingAPI({ token });
const response = await api.get('https://example.com');
if (response.statusCode === 200) {
console.log(response.body);
} else {
throw new Error(`Crawlbase API request failed: ${response.statusCode}`);
}
This follows Crawlbase’s documented SDK shape: initialize CrawlingAPI with a token, call api.get(url), and inspect statusCode and body. The response’s HTTP status alone is not enough to establish that the target page was fetched successfully; check the target status as described below.

Scrapfly: create a scrape configuration
import { ScrapflyClient, ScrapeConfig } from 'scrapfly-sdk';
const key = process.env.SCRAPFLY_KEY;
if (!key) throw new Error('Set SCRAPFLY_KEY in the server environment');
const client = new ScrapflyClient({ key });
const response = await client.scrape(
new ScrapeConfig({
url: 'https://example.com',
render_js: true,
}),
);
console.log(response.result.content);
This is the shape shown by Scrapfly’s repository: construct a client and a ScrapeConfig, call client.scrape(...), then access result content. Its example also shows a selector helper. Check the installed package version before copying the call, particularly the option names; the repository says unblocker is the current anti-bot option name and asp is a deprecated alias that continues to work.
Both examples request one URL. Keep the first integration small enough that you can inspect the exact returned object and headers before adding parser assumptions or concurrency.
Choose static fetching or JavaScript rendering
Start with the least complex request that returns the content you need. A static response may be faster or use fewer resources, depending on the service. Turn on browser rendering only if the initial response omits content that is added by client-side JavaScript or lazy loading.
Crawlbase token choice
Crawlbase distinguishes a Normal Token, intended for static HTML and JSON endpoints, from a JavaScript Token for single-page applications and client-rendered or lazy-loaded content. Its documentation says a JavaScript Token is required for options such as page_wait, ajax_wait, scroll, and css_click_selector. Begin with the Normal Token when it returns the page you need; the Crawlbase docs advise moving to the JavaScript Token if the ordinary result is empty or blocked. These names and behaviors apply specifically to Crawlbase.

Scrapfly rendering
The Scrapfly repository’s example enables rendering with render_js: true. It also demonstrates a country option and an anti-bot option. Those controls are provider-specific; consult the current SDK reference for their valid values and consequences rather than assuming another SDK accepts the same fields.
A fixed wait is not a universal fix for missing content. Prefer the provider’s documented condition-based waits or interaction options where available, and verify that the rendered output includes the data your parser expects.
Parse the response and validate extracted data
First establish the response shape: for example, Crawlbase’s sample exposes a body, while Scrapfly’s exposes result.content. Parse only after confirming that the request succeeded and the body contains the expected page. For ordinary HTML, use an HTML parser appropriate to your project; for a provider-supported structured scraper, use it only when it covers the target and fields you require.
- Check that required fields exist before passing results downstream.
- Handle missing values explicitly rather than assuming a selector always matches.
- Expect page markup and client-side behavior to change; validate output at the boundary of your application.
- Keep provider response parsing separate from business logic so a provider change does not require rewriting every consumer.
Scrapfly’s repository example shows raw content and selector-based access. Crawlbase documents built-in scrapers for supported sites. Neither capability implies that every website or desired field is supported automatically.

Distinguish API success from target-page success
A request can succeed at the API transport layer while failing to retrieve useful target content. Crawlbase documents both response.statusCode and a target verdict in response.headers.cb_status; its documentation notes that an API 200 can accompany an empty body and a non-200 target status. Inspect both fields and handle them according to the provider’s current status definitions.
Do not assume that other providers use Crawlbase’s header name or status meanings. Use each service’s own response documentation, and record a request identifier if the provider supplies one so you can trace a failure without logging credentials or sensitive page contents.
Handle failures and retries deliberately
Separate permanent request problems from transient service or network problems. Apply a bounded retry policy with exponential backoff only to failures the provider identifies as retryable. Do not retry every 4xx response: invalid parameters, credentials, or access conditions usually need correction, not another identical request. Exact status codes and billing effects vary by provider, so verify the current error and pricing documentation before deciding which failures to retry.
Common troubleshooting checks
- Package import or TypeScript error: confirm the package name, installed version, module mode, and import syntax against that SDK’s current quickstart. Crawlbase documents ESM and CommonJS patterns; do not copy one blindly into a project configured for the other.
- Missing or rejected credential: verify the correct server environment variable is present in the running process and that the token type matches the requested Crawlbase features. Never solve this by moving a secret into frontend code.
- HTTP success but empty or unexpected body: inspect the provider’s target-page status as well as the API status. If the page depends on JavaScript, try the provider’s documented rendering path; for Crawlbase, that means evaluating its JavaScript Token and the relevant wait or interaction options.
- Rendered page still lacks a field: confirm the target actually presents the field under the configured region, session, and interaction conditions, and validate selectors against the returned content. A longer fixed delay may not address a wrong selector or an access block.
- Repeated throttling or timeouts: reduce request concurrency, use bounded backoff, and check the account’s documented limits and response headers. Do not assume a plan’s quota or service limit without checking the current provider documentation.
- Retries create duplicate work: use provider-supported request IDs, idempotency mechanisms, or job tracking where available; do not assume a timed-out request was never processed.
Scale recurring work with jobs, callbacks, or batches
For slow targets or sustained workloads, check whether the provider supports asynchronous jobs, callbacks or webhooks, crawl jobs, and client reuse. Crawlbase documents an asynchronous request that returns a request ID and callback delivery, and recommends async processing for sustained high-volume submission. Confirm that those features, concurrency limits, and quotas fit your current account and workload; do not infer comparative performance from the existence of an async API.

- Submit work using the provider’s documented async endpoint or SDK method.
- Persist the returned job or request ID with the target URL and your own correlation identifier.
- Receive or poll for completion using the documented mechanism, then validate both target status and extracted output.
- Make callback handling safe to repeat, since delivery and retry behavior are provider-specific.
- Monitor documented quota or concurrency headers and adjust your queue instead of sending unbounded parallel requests.
Or skip the browser setup
If the task is taking a clean website screenshot rather than extracting fields from HTML, ScreenshotNeo offers a screenshot API and MCP server. It accepts one GET request with a URL and can return PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. A screenshot call is not a substitute for a scraping API when you need structured page data, but it avoids building and maintaining a browser capture stack for screenshot output.
For a full-page WebP example, install Python’s requests package and run this server-side code with your ScreenshotNeo access key:
import requests
r = requests.get(
"https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot",
params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"},
timeout=90,
)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options and response details. Its documented distinctions are practical for screenshot workflows: consent banners are accepted and removed along with supported newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture; bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed; an MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents; and the free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card, while paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Each cleanup step can be turned off, and responses identify page verdict and billing headers.
Sign up for ScreenshotNeo’s free plan to get 1,000 screenshots a month without a card.
Operational and cost checks before deployment
- Use the smallest capable mode: begin with static fetching and enable browser rendering only when the target content requires it. Provider-specific costs and resource use should be checked in that provider’s current plan documentation.
- Budget for retries and empty results: API request success and target retrieval success are distinct; record target outcomes so repeated failures are visible.
- Reuse responsibly: follow the SDK’s recommendation for client reuse and keep concurrency within documented account limits.
- Review output and privacy terms: understand what page data is sent to the provider, how results are handled, and whether the target permits the intended access.
- Keep behavior observable: log request IDs, statuses, timing and safe metadata, but not keys or unnecessary personal data from page content.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use a TypeScript SDK in a Node.js project?
Yes, when the chosen package supports your Node.js version and module setup. Check the provider’s runtime requirement and import format; the Crawlbase Node SDK, for example, documents Node.js 16 or later.
Does a 200 response mean the scraped page worked?
Not necessarily. The API may return HTTP 200 even when the target-page result is empty or unsuccessful. Inspect the provider’s separate target status when it exposes one.
Does a scraping SDK make scraping a website permissible?
No. Permission depends on the target, data, method, and applicable jurisdiction; review the relevant site terms and authoritative legal guidance.
