To use a teleprompter while live streaming, put your script on a screen close to the camera lens, set the text large enough to read from your normal speaking position, and adjust the scroll to match your natural pace. Rehearse with your actual camera and streaming setup before going live. You can do this with a phone, tablet, or browser window; a dedicated camera-mounted prompter is optional.
Choose an app, browser, or dedicated teleprompter
There are two practical approaches. An app or browser prompter displays text on a phone, tablet, or another screen positioned near the lens. A dedicated rig places reflected or displayed text in front of the camera. Choose based on how your camera is arranged, how far you sit from it, and whether you want an integrated setup.

Teleprompter.com describes both app/browser and hardware approaches at Teleprompter.com. Elgato Prompter is one hardware example, not a requirement: its setup uses camera mounts or backplates, a computer connection, and Camera Hub. Check the manufacturer’s current compatibility details before buying.
Prepare a script that is easy to deliver live
- Use conversational wording and short sentences rather than writing for silent reading.
- Break the script into sections or cues. If a live discussion interrupts you, a clear section marker makes it easier to find your place.
- Leave room to pause, look away briefly, and resume. A script should support your delivery, not make you race to keep up.
There is no universal ideal script length or scroll speed established by the cited guides. Base both on your speaking pace and the demands of the stream.

Position the text and set its pace
- Place the screen near the lens. Keep the text as close to the camera lens as your arrangement allows. A prompt far to one side makes your eye line visibly shift.
- Set a readable size. From your normal speaking position, increase the font until it is comfortable to read. Adjust line spacing and brightness as needed.
- Choose a scroll mode. Start slowly, read aloud, and adjust until the text follows your natural speaking pace. If the software supports manual or follow mode, use it when you need to pause or depart from the script.
- Check for mirrored text. With reflective teleprompter glass, the text may need to be flipped horizontally. An app-only screen does not necessarily need this setting; confirm how your specific setup displays the prompt.
Elgato’s Prompter XL Getting Started guide advises positioning at eye level and adjusting font size, brightness, and scroll speed. The OBS Teleprompter documentation describes autoscroll, manual, and follow modes, along with adjustable pace and a flip option for external glass.
Set up a hardware prompter safely
Hardware steps depend on the model and camera. Follow the exact manual for your combination rather than assuming every prompter mounts or connects the same way.

- Attach the camera using the correct backplate or mount for its body and lens.
- Connect the prompter to the computer and install or open the software required by the manufacturer.
- Configure the display and text appearance, then verify that the camera view is unobstructed.
- Check that the lens does not touch the glass and that the camera head can support the complete rig, including accessories.
Elgato’s Prompter Quick Start Guide covers camera configurations and setup. Its Prompter XL guide describes beamsplitter glass and a detachable display. Elgato also documents supplemental 1/4-inch support mounting for situations where the ball head cannot support the prompter and accessories. Do not continue using a mount that feels unstable; verify its load rating and mounting points.
Use a teleprompter with OBS
A straightforward arrangement is to show the prompt on a separate phone, tablet, or dedicated prompter display while OBS captures your camera. This keeps the script available without adding it to the broadcast scene. If you want an on-screen prompt or another software-specific arrangement, check the documentation for the exact teleprompter and OBS configuration you use; overlay behavior is not the same across every version and operating system.

- Open your script in the chosen prompter app, browser, or display.
- Place the prompt close to the camera lens and frame the camera as it will appear in the stream.
- Set the scroll mode and speed, then read aloud to check that the text keeps pace with you.
- Start an OBS preview or recording and check the camera framing, eye line, and audio before broadcasting.
OBS Teleprompter documents browser-based prompting with autoscroll, manual, and follow modes. It is one option; it is not a required OBS component.
Rehearse the complete stream before going live
Run through several minutes of the script at speaking volume using the final camera, prompt position, and streaming workflow. Watch a recording or preview. If you look too far away from the lens, reposition the screen; if the scroll gets ahead, slow it or switch to a supported manual mode. Confirm your audio and stream destination as well as the prompt controls. A rehearsal is a practical check, not a guarantee of eye contact or a measured performance improvement.

If you are relying on an integrated platform workflow, confirm the current app version, account eligibility, stream key, and platform instructions first. For example, one vendor’s platform-features page lists integrations for Facebook, YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram, as well as custom RTMP destinations, while noting that TikTok Live is subject to TikTok’s eligibility requirements. Those integrations are vendor-specific and can change; they are not requirements for using a teleprompter.
