To run MediaMTX as a Linux service, place its executable and configuration in stable locations, create a systemd unit that starts after networking is ready, then enable and start the service. Configure MediaMTX to forward the incoming stream to the current YouTube RTMPS ingest URL and stream key. This starts MediaMTX at boot, but the documented sample unit does not restart it after a crash or guarantee uninterrupted YouTube delivery.
What this setup does—and what it does not
MediaMTX is a live media server and proxy that can forward an incoming stream to another server. In this setup, a source publishes to a MediaMTX path, and MediaMTX forwards that stream to YouTube. The Linux start-on-boot instructions target systemd-based distributions such as Ubuntu and Debian; they explicitly do not apply to OpenWrt. A systemd unit enabled for boot handles starting the process; it does not, by itself, establish that the source is available, the forwarding connection stays healthy, or YouTube accepts the stream continuously. YouTube account eligibility, duration limits, and policy conditions for a 24/7 broadcast are not established by these setup instructions. Confirm your account and content meet YouTube’s current requirements before relying on a continuous stream.
Install MediaMTX in stable locations
The MediaMTX Linux example uses /usr/local/bin/mediamtx for the executable and /usr/local/etc/mediamtx.yml for configuration, with the unit at /etc/systemd/system/mediamtx.service. Configure forwarding to YouTube over RTMPS

In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, open Stream settings, click the lock icon to get the RTMPS URL, and copy the stream key. Use the current values shown for your stream, not an example hostname in older documentation. YouTube’s instructions describe RTMPS as RTMP over TLS/SSL and say the protocol and server should both be

/usr/local/etc/mediamtx.yml, add a forwarding destination under the path where your source publishes. Keep the real stream key private. Do not include it in public examples, screenshots, repositories, or logs. If you have exposed it, replace it in YouTube Studio before continuing.

Ensure the stream reaching MediaMTX contains both video and audio tracks. The MediaMTX forwarding guide warns that YouTube silently rejects video-only streams. If your intended output is silent, it still needs an audio track. MediaMTX: Forward streams
MediaMTX’s example hostname is illustrative and was the URL YouTube reported when that documentation was updated. Retrieve the current value from Live Control Room instead. The forwarding guide also includes a certificate-fingerprint note; do not copy an example fingerprint as a universal setting, because certificate details may change and must be verified for the specific endpoint.
Create and enable the systemd service

Enable the wait-online service appropriate to your network stack, if available. MediaMTX’s instructions suggest
systemd-networkd-wait-online.service, but distributions use different network managers and service names. Verify the correct service on your machine rather than assuming that exact unit exists. -
Reload systemd’s unit definitions, enable MediaMTX at boot, and start it now:

Verify the service and the YouTube stream

Check that systemd reports the service enabled and active, then confirm it remains enabled after reboot.

Inspect service output for evidence that MediaMTX loaded the expected configuration. The MediaMTX configuration reference lists
stdoutas the default log destination; under systemd, output is commonly available through the system journal, though journal behavior depends on the host’s systemd setup. MediaMTX configuration file reference -
Confirm the source publishes to the same path configured for forwarding, and that the destination uses the current RTMPS URL and the correct key.

Check YouTube’s Live Control Room for an incoming stream and confirm that both audio and video arrive.
The configuration reference identifies itself as the latest-release configuration and shows version marker v1.21.1. That marker can change; consult the reference for the version you install rather than assuming it applies to every release. MediaMTX configuration file reference

Troubleshoot common failures

The service fails to start: check that the executable exists at
/usr/local/bin/mediamtx, the configuration exists at/usr/local/etc/mediamtx.yml, and the unit’sExecStartmatches both paths. After editing the unit file, runsudo systemctl daemon-reloadand start the service again. -
MediaMTX starts before the network is ready: verify that the unit includes
After=network-online.targetandWants=network-online.target, and that the correct wait-online implementation is enabled for the system’s network stack. -
YouTube does not receive a stream: check that the source publishes to the configured path, the forwarding destination uses the current RTMPS URL, and the key is correct. Replace a key if it may have been exposed.

YouTube rejects a video-only feed: provide an audio track as well as video, including when the intended sound is silence.

The stream stops after a MediaMTX process crash: the documented minimal unit has no
Restart=setting. Boot enablement is not crash recovery. Add and test an appropriate systemd restart policy for your environment if you need the service process restarted, and monitor the stream separately; neither action alone proves that the source and YouTube forwarding have recovered. -
Forwarding breaks after an endpoint change: retrieve the current RTMPS URL from Live Control Room rather than relying on MediaMTX’s illustrative hostname. Verify any endpoint-specific certificate details instead of copying an old fingerprint.
