Yes—a second-hand desktop can run a 24/7 YouTube podcast stream using OBS, but no system-requirements checklist can guarantee it will stay live. Inspect the PC, configure a simple broadcast, and test the exact audio, visuals, encoder and internet connection under sustained load before relying on it. You must also plan for power or internet interruptions, copyright checks and the limits on automatic archiving of very long broadcasts.

What you need to keep a podcast stream running

The desktop runs OBS, which encodes the video and audio and sends them to YouTube Live. That makes the PC, its cooling and power, the internet connection and YouTube’s live-stream setup parts of one continuity system. YouTube says, “You do not need expensive equipment, what you have at hand will do,” but a low-cost machine still needs to pass a real-world test. YouTube’s live-streaming tips recommend testing the setup and monitoring the broadcast.

  • A desktop in sound working condition, with a supported operating system, adequate cooling and the ports you need.
  • OBS Studio, a microphone or other intended audio source, and a simple visual for the show.
  • A verified YouTube channel with live streaming enabled, plus the stream URL and key from YouTube Studio.
  • An upload connection that can sustain your chosen video and audio settings, with a recovery plan for outages.

Check the used PC before setting it up

Inspect condition and compatibility

Before buying or putting the machine into service, check its operating system, graphics adapter, storage, fans, cooling, ports and general condition. OBS’s published Windows baseline is Windows 10 or 11 and a DirectX 10.1-compatible GPU. That is a compatibility floor, not a recommendation for a particular used-PC specification. The OBS Project warns, “Having a compatible system does not guarantee that it is capable of streaming or recording using OBS Studio.” Its system requirements page is dated 2021-08-25; check current OBS compatibility and validate the actual machine rather than treating that baseline as a 24/7 guarantee.

Test the workload you will actually use

OBS performance depends on the encoder, resolution, frame rate and scene complexity. A static podcast visual and one audio source are a lighter workload than animated graphics, multiple video sources or complex effects, but only a sustained test of your own configuration can establish whether the PC handles it reliably. OBS’s Quick Start Guide recommends using the Auto-Configuration Wizard; hardware encoding may move some work from the CPU to a GPU encoding component, but which encoders and quality options are available depends on the hardware generation. See OBS hardware encoding.

Enable YouTube Live and connect OBS

  1. Check channel eligibility in advance. YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-stream restrictions in the past 90 days. First-time live-stream enablement may take up to 24 hours, so do not leave this until broadcast day. Check YouTube’s live-streaming tips for current requirements.
  2. Create a live stream in YouTube Studio. Use the stream setup to obtain the server URL and stream key. Keep the key private: anyone with access to it may be able to control the broadcast.
  3. Open OBS and add the stream details. In OBS, open Settings → Stream, choose YouTube as the service, and enter or connect the URL and key shown in YouTube Studio. Labels and available connection options can vary by OBS version.
  4. Build a minimal scene. Add the intended microphone or program audio and a static image or other necessary visual. Include only overlays and sources the podcast needs.
  5. Preview before going public. Start with a private or unlisted test where appropriate. Check that the picture, audio levels and sync are right in OBS and in YouTube’s preview, then monitor YouTube’s stream health.

For connection steps and encoder guidance, use YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.

Choose output settings for spoken-word video

Set resolution, frame rate and bitrate together: the connection must sustain the output, and the computer must encode it without dropping frames. YouTube’s H.264 recommendations include these values:

  • Operating System: Windows 11 Pro (64-bit)
Output YouTube-recommended H.264 bitrate
1080p at 30 fps 10 Mbps
720p at 30 fps 6 Mbps

These are YouTube platform recommendations, not a guarantee that an individual PC or Indian home connection can sustain the stream. For a low-motion podcast visual, 720p at 30 fps is a sensible conservative starting point to test, not an official minimum. YouTube also specifies CBR, a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds), up to 60 fps, and AAC or MP3 audio in its live encoder settings. Use the bitrate guidance for your selected codec and output, then check OBS statistics and YouTube stream health during an extended test.

Run a sustained test and plan recovery

  1. Run the exact scene, audio chain, resolution, frame rate and bitrate you intend to use for a sustained period before announcing a 24/7 schedule.
  2. Watch OBS for rendering or encoding problems and YouTube’s stream health for connection or quality warnings. Listen for noise, clipping, dropouts and sync problems.
  3. Test what happens when the internet briefly disconnects and when OBS is restarted. Confirm how you will reconnect and who will notice if the stream does not recover.
  4. Use a wired network connection if practical and test the actual ISP upload connection at the intended bitrate. There is no universal household bandwidth threshold established for Indian YouTube streams. A National Informatics Centre page gives 2–4 Mbps dedicated bandwidth per stream for its hired-agency webcast scenario; that is not a general YouTube bitrate or a residential ISP guarantee. See NIC webcast requirements.
  5. Consider a UPS for brief power interruptions, but size it for your own PC and network equipment and verify the runtime; no single UPS capacity or runtime applies to an unspecified used desktop. Arrange a way to monitor the stream and respond to longer power or ISP outages.

Understand archives, copyright and prerecorded material

A 24-hour stream may not be archived automatically

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not promise an automatic archive for one continuous 24-hour broadcast. If preserving the whole programme matters, arrange local recording and consider running separate broadcast segments; test your workflow and verify YouTube’s current behavior before relying on an archive. The under-12-hour condition is in YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.

Use material you have rights to broadcast

YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. It may replace the picture with a placeholder, interrupt or terminate a broadcast, and may claim an archived stream after it ends. A license by itself may not prevent a live interruption: the rights holder may need to allowlist your channel through Content ID. Use original or properly cleared audio and visuals, and review YouTube’s copyright guidance before scheduling music or other third-party material.

If the stream is a podcast with live speech, test the microphone and any playback sources together. If it consists of prerecorded episodes or music, confirm that you have the rights to stream every item and that your format complies with YouTube’s rules; a playlist does not remove copyright obligations.

Estimate the cost of using a local desktop

The cost of a second-hand PC depends on its purchase price, condition, measured power draw, electricity tariff and any continuity equipment you add. No India-wide household tariff or operating cost for an unspecified used desktop is established here. To estimate electricity expense, measure the machine’s wattage while streaming and apply your local tariff to its actual operating hours; do not use a generic monthly rupee figure. Compare that ongoing responsibility with whether you can maintain power, internet, restarts and monitoring at the location.

Troubleshooting a stream that will not stay live

Symptom Likely area to check What to do
You cannot start a YouTube broadcast Channel verification, live-stream restrictions or first-time enablement Check channel eligibility and enable live streaming ahead of time; first-time activation can take up to 24 hours.
OBS shows encoding or rendering trouble PC workload, encoder choice or an unnecessarily complex scene Reduce scene complexity or output demand, use the Auto-Configuration Wizard as a starting point, and repeat the sustained test with the intended setup.
YouTube reports poor stream health or viewers see buffering Upload stability or bitrate beyond what the connection sustains Test the ISP connection, use a wired link if practical, and choose a bitrate/output combination the connection can maintain.
Picture works but audio is missing, noisy or out of sync OBS source selection, levels, or interaction between audio and playback sources Check the selected source and levels in OBS; test every intended audio source in the preview before the public broadcast.
The broadcast stops after copyrighted material appears Third-party audio or visuals, including material covered by a license that is not allowlisted Use original or properly cleared material and ask the rights holder about Content ID allowlisting where relevant.
The stream does not return after power or internet loss No recovery or monitoring process for the encoder and connection Test interruption and restart behavior, arrange monitoring, and decide who will restore the broadcast after an outage.
A complete 24-hour archive is missing The automatic archive guidance covers streams under 12 hours, not a continuous 24-hour broadcast Use local recording and consider splitting the programme into segments; verify current platform behavior before depending on an archive.
